My stay at Margaritaville Island Reserve Riviera Maya was deeply disappointing, though a few standout employees—Ivan at the 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar, Regina from entertainment, and Bernice the concierge—prevented me from giving it a zero rating. From the outset, customer service was abysmal. We did not receive the margarita popsicles or flip-flops advertised online upon our arrival. Additionally, our room was inadequately cleaned, with a leftover Margaritaville cookie boat from the previous guests repurposed as decor. At the License to Chill restaurant, our waiter Antonio was exceptionally rude and unprofessional. Despite ordering six carne asada tacos, we waited ten minutes while non-black patrons who ordered after us received their food. When Antonio finally addressed us, he forgot our order and only brought three incorrect tacos. Upon being informed of the mistake, he responded with attitude, claiming they were out of the correct tacos and about to close. This happened on two separate occasions. At the 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar, a waitress took my order for two frozen strawberry margaritas but returned with two mango margaritas, stating, "you ordered strawberry but I’ll give you mango." By that time, I had already obtained the correct drinks myself from the bar. At the Boathouse restaurant, we were initially denied mimosas at breakfast, only to see the white couple next to us receive them shortly after. When we questioned this, we were begrudgingly given mimosas. Additionally, after a tropical storm disrupted the air conditioning, non-black guests were served ice-cold water, while we were given lukewarm water. Requests for ice water were met with attitude. On our third night, we discovered a cockroach in our room. Despite calling the front desk, it took over 20 minutes and multiple calls for someone to address the issue. The points system at Joe Merchants was confusing and poorly explained. There were limited items available to stock the mini-bar without additional charges. The in-room margarita bar was also disappointing, lacking proper instructions and ingredients. When I voiced my concerns to Veronica at the lobby, she was unapologetic and initially unable to offer any form of compensation. She eventually suggested a 20-minute massage, subject to availability, which was not available. After further discussion, she upgraded our room from a swim-out suite to an infinity pool suite, which provided a pleasant view for our final night. Overall, I rate this experience 2/10. The resort must ensure equal treatment for all guests, as everyone is spending their hard-earned money. This was a regrettable experience, and the time and money wasted are irreplaceable. It would be appropriate to offer a complimentary stay in the USA or at least a partial refund for our stay.
