The second stop of the Kitakyushu trip in Japan was to the Grand Base Beppu Hotel in Beppu. The hotel is about 700m from Beppu Station, within walking distance. The hotel is an apartment-type hotel with a full set of kitchen equipment, washing machine, etc. The room is large and has three beds, two large and one small, which can accommodate 5 people. The toiletries are very simple, only towels and toothbrushes. The most important thing to mention is that this is a hotel with completely self-service check-in and check-out. There is no waiter in sight, and the door is closed. You can only enter through a password, and the self-service check-in window (a video interactive screen ) is located inside. The most critical question is, if I book the hotel on Ctrip, I should be given (received) an access code and check-in registration, and then get a room password after successful registration. However, Ctrip never gave me any password, instructions or prompts (email/text message). It wasn't until I arrived at the door that I realized this was a fully self-service hotel. After carefully reading the instructions in English and Japanese at the door, I found out whether I needed to register and left my contact number. Being rogue, I had no choice but to initiate an international call to contact the hotel (by the way, it would be really annoying if you don’t understand Japanese or English). After entering, I obtained the access code and communicated the check-in method after entering, and obtained the registration code. After waiting for two calls totaling nearly half an hour (costing an additional fee of nearly RMB 30 yuan), I finally completed the check-in of two rooms. Check-in took a long time, as other reviewers have said. It took a while to unlock the entrance automatically and check-in after entering because it was difficult to understand. The parking lot is first-come-first-served, so it is better to think that there is none. We were guided to two nearby parking lots, but the first one was already full, and the second one was far away, so we searched for it ourselves. I used it with my parents, but my impression is that it would be difficult to use without young people. The facilities inside were very good. The water pressure in the shower was so strong that it hurts...lol It was cleaned neatly, but it was a little disappointing that the oil splashes from the kitchen used by the previous person and the disposable contact lenses that became crispy were left on the floor.

This property has no staff onsite. So you have no ability to leave luggage before check in or after checkout, so you have to use the lockers at the train station. Email on entry was confusing and required a call. I observed similar struggles with other guests. Checkin is all via keypad. Room was a nice size, had a kitchen, and sitting area (cushions were stained). Location to the train station was nice, but it is not bar any hot springs or other attractions.
