There is little to detain even the most inquisitive traveller at Derby which is the frontier settlement at the western end of the Gibb River Road so a night is as much as you’re likely to spend here and the Spinifex is up to the task. The good: our guest room (one queen + one single bed) was clean, spacious, relatively quiet and reasonably comfortable. Everything expected was there and it all worked as expected. The beds were comfortable, the linens clean and were each able to find a pillow we liked. The bathroom was of adequate size and the plumbing mostly worked OK. The included Wifi worked well on all our devices. Meals taken in the main hotel were wholesome and tasty and the service staff were efficient and attentive. The not so good: the Spinifex assuredly offers Derby’s premium lodgings, but they are still more serviceable than desirable. Architecturally speaking, the guest rooms have more in common with a shipping container than traditional hotel or motel rooms and the décor could best be described as spartan. The hot water from the shower in our room suffered from some unpredictable and uncomfortable temperature fluctuations if used during the evening or morning rush hours and the bathroom lighting was adequate for everything except shaving or, I assume, making up.
Looking for a place to eat in Derby we did a bit of research and settled on the Boab Inn. We both enjoyed the locally caught Barra … one with chips and salad and the other with vege. The Barra was cooked to perfection and the veg and salad was fresh. The staff were very friendly and inviting. The menu was extensive but when in the Kimberley the Barra is a must.
Mud Crab Motel is the best choice in Derby for an overnight stay or for a few days. It is located in a safe area and ample parking is available in front of the Motel or if arriving by bus, an easy walk from the bus station. Alan has created a comfortable place comprising spotlessly clean dongas with a bar fridge in your room and self catering options. The communal kitchen is well stocked with cooking equipment plus there is a microwave and BBQ for residents use. A communal outdoor eating area provides ambiance and a chance to chat with other guests. If you prefer, there is an evening takeaway option of tasty Asian food on the premises. Everything is spotlessly clean and the staff friendly and helpful. Alan is a genial host, willing to advise on local attractions.. It is excellent value for money in an area where accommodation tends to be expensive. Highly recommended
