the location is of course exceptional, especially when you arrive by train.
I went there for a show, dropping off my luggage the morning of my arrival by train, with a smile, then on my way to the show via the station a few meters away.
the staff is very pleasant and smiling, the friendly side that we appreciate.
the room is absolutely perfect, very good bedding, large bathroom, spa bath and superb shower.

The Hotel shows five stars! The room had no wifi whatsoever, although they showed three different wifi lans. Attempts to bridge this gap with mobile hotspots were not helpful. Noises from other rooms were audible, which means a bad noise insulation. Worst of all was that there was first only boiling hot water in the bathroom. This was due to the fact that all cold water supplies were closed. Still after opening them ourselves, one of the two lavatories cold water regulator was not functional. Shocking was that the shower was switching from regulated 38 degrees Celsius to suddenly boiling hot water and then to ice cold water. This made showering an unpleasant not to say dangerous encounter! You judge if this Hotel deserves the five star rating. Our attempt to communicate the shortcomings was prompted with the statement that the maintenance technicians had left! (???)

It’s located right in front of the dome and next to the train station so the location was perfect. As a 5 star hotel though, the internet connection was sporadic and I had to ask for tea. There was no complimentary coffee either. And the front desk staff members did their job. The room was rather outdated and showed wear and tear. I hated the big ole’ heavy key, but some might find them charming.

This beautiful old-fashioned Hotel is very close to the Cathedral of Cologne. The location is both great (central: the Cathedral, Museum, and Philharmonie are all a few steps away from the Hotel) and terrible since it is also very close to the train station, and all sorts of people walk by. The service is good, if not exceptional, and rather familiar. Some rooms need an update; they look very much like the '70s or '80s.

Gestern Abend besuchten wir die Bar im Excelsior. Nicht das erste mal. Wir sind seit 20 Jahren Gäste in der Bar und in der Hanse Stube. Wir sind ca. 19:30 Uhr in die Bar gekommen. 1 Gast saß an der Theke. Wir haben Gin Fizz ungarische Art (was gut war) und Espresso Martini bestellt. Danach möchten wir in die Raucher lounge gehen. Leider habe ich meinen Drink umgekippt. War auch kein Problem. Der Service war sofort da. Zurück in der Bar möchten wir mit dem Barchef über den Espresso Martini sprechen. Nach unserer Meinung sollte ein Espresso Martini im Martiniglas serviert werden und 3 Kaffeebohnen on top sein. Der Barchef, im Übrigen sehr arrogant, war dies wohl nicht möglich. Wir haben das akzeptiert. Wir haben die Rechnung bestellt, die uns von einer jungen Dame auf den Tisch "geschmissen" wurde. In der Bar hat man uns gezeigt, dass man unfähig ist, Kritik anzunehmen. Das haben wir bisher noch nie erlebt.
