It would have been good to have had the opportunity to join the many 5-star reports on this hotel, but sadly their management failed and almost landed us outside this hotel on a dark Friday night with nowhere to sleep. and this was to be the second stop. I had a Red Letter Day voucher and wanted to stay on the 19th & 20th of January. I spoke with Jane Arnold who, with her husband Richard, apparently runs this hotel. I was told that I would have to pay a supplement of £30 a night on top of the voucher because we would be staying on a Friday and Saturday. That agreed I made the point that the particular Saturday was my wife's birthday and, that we would want to eat in on both nights. This was all agreed upon some weeks ago and, had it not been for the fact that we had friends as near as Welshpool, who we then invited to join us for dinner on my wife's birthday, I would have had no reason to contact the hotel again before arriving on their doorstep. As I had to alter the evening meal booking of 7pm. from two to four people, fortunately, I needed to telephone to make the change, I was met with a recorded statement advising that the hotel was now closed for its winter break and would be re-opening on Friday the 26th January - By which time I had obviously invited our friends. It should not be difficult to imagine my shock, especially as I had booked our stay with the lady of the house, and not an employee. Very fortunately The Valley Hotel in Iron Bridge stepped into the breech and our stay there could not have been better. Nor, did it put our friends out unduly travelling from Welshpool. Naturally, when we are next in that area, we shall be staying at this Best Western hotel, particularly because the email that I sent almost immediately upon hearing that recorded message has not moved Jane Arnold to respond. Really? It will be good to know where I stand with the Red Letter Day voucher. It is a shame to have to spoil a run of 5 star reviews, but the seriousness of the position we could have faced had I not had a reason to 'phone, I feel needs to be shared. Others may not be so lucky if they happen to clash with the Arnold's holiday plans. I would have better understood had I been advised of their last-minute plans. It would have given me time to change mine and realise that everyone in the catering industry needs a break at some time - Just think of those you may upset in doing so without notice.
