Last year, we had a Christmas shopping trip up to Exeter by train from Penzance (very few big stores in Cornwall!), and we stayed in an hotel about half a mile outside the city centre. This year we decided to do the same, but stayed right in the centre this time – at the Turks Head. This is basically just a pub (with its own microbrewery!) with a few rooms. We were pleasantly surprised at our “Comfy” room – well laid out and the ensuite was clean and warm. We were slightly amused to see the ear plugs and eye mask on our bedside tables! Our advice is to use them. The room was right at the front of the pub, over the front door. Obviously, at throwing out time, large groups of people seemed to gather right below our room, and were there for ages, chatting at volume. Later on it seemed as though several groups of younger people were running up and down the High Street, shouting and arguing. Unfortunately, we had not availed ourselves of the ear plugs, but never mind, the pub had a great atmosphere with very helpful and friendly staff, and although we didn’t eat here, I would have no hesitation in recommending it for a short stay – we just had two nights.
