I recently stayed in an economy room and was deeply disappointed by the experience. Initially, I was not aware that the economy rooms were situated across the road from the main hotel building. This unexpected separation proved problematic, especially when opening the windows led to an overwhelming bad smell, a significant concern since I was traveling with my two-year-old child. The absence of a terrace, which at first seemed a downside, ironically spared us from enduring the outdoors' unpleasant odors more than necessary. Unfortunately, our discomfort was compounded by excessive noise from both the nearby main road and the hotel throughout the night, which had a depressive effect on our stay. A particularly low point was witnessing a drainage lorry discharging waste right as we transitioned from the room area to the main hotel—this was both shocking and off-putting. Furthermore, the dated infrastructure of the economy section did little to lift our spirits. On the brighter side, the quality of the food served was quite good, offering a slight reprieve from the otherwise disheartening experience. Regrettably, I felt that the value for money was extremely poor, and the stay left me feeling cheated. Given these issues, especially the noise and hygiene concerns, I cannot recommend same, particularly for those traveling with children.
La Pirogue Mauritius

There are four star hotels, five star hotels and, if you believe the hype of the Emirates Palace in the UAE, even seven star hotels but in my opinion few match La Pirogue. It’s not all glitz, glass, chrome or smoke and mirrors but something very special that it has successfully held onto since its opening in 1976. That something is delivered in spades by La Pirogue as a charming, extremely comfortable, beautifully appointed, beach side paradise that exudes all the traditional aspects of Mauritius. The architecture, the accommodation, the food and most importantly the people who work there together have made our holiday so special and memorable. We had the standard garden bungalow which was quiet, very comfortable and kept impeccably clean and tidy by our housekeeping lady Marianna. It had everything you need for some very comfortable and long sleeps although we tended to set our alarm quite early to walk on the very long, clean, sandy beach. Each early morning walk was followed by a lovely breakfast buffet which offered every type of breakfast you could reasonably think of with eggs and noodle dishes being made fresh to order. Two beachside restaurants offer very tasty food with the choice of dishes enough to tide you over to the evening buffet. Each evening the buffet loosely followed a geographic theme with the very extensive choice of dishes provided to a high standard. Through these journeys of the world cuisines the highlights for us were the Mauritian and Chinese nights. The beach, the very extensive hotel grounds and the beautiful pool area are maintained to a high standard by a hard working team of gardeners. So there in a nutshell you have my thoughts on the hotel itself. However, none of the above would be possible without the team of people who work tirelessly day and night to ensure that the hotel delivers what is promised as you first enter the grounds. In all our travels around the world for business and holidays we have never been so privileged to have been treated the way we have over the last two weeks. To say they’re friendly is an understatement. Every one greets you with a smile and a chat that is not at all forced but a natural reaction to the way the hotel is run as (cliched I know) a very big, happy family. With four hundred plus members of staff it’s impossible to mention all of them but those we met that delivered above and beyond expectations were Sophie, Wendy, Amelia and Suman (Coconut Café), Kamla, Lobin, Suresh, Augun, Prayag, Ravin, Ajay (Wolmar) and of course the chefs, Diksha, Mary Jane and Ketia and last but not least the captains of the kitchen Vik and Vikram. I hope I spelled all the names correctly.

Honestly speaking this was the best resort I have ever stayed at. When looking at hotels in Mauritius I had to make sure it was special as it was our honeymoon, Maradiva villas made our trip special, the service was impeccable, the staff where amazing and the scenery was unimaginable. We stayed seven nights at Maradiva and I would definitely go back. Upon our arrivals we were greeted in the most pleasant manor with some drinks. We had a buggy waiting for us at the reception to take us over to the villa. When we had arrived to the room I was amazed with how everything looked. In the nicest way it was annoying how attentive they were. We would have our room cleaned twice a day without fail. Every evening they would some form of a gift in the room. The resort has four restaurants and all of them are as good as each other. The beach was clean and all the staff would have a smile on their face. Special thanks to danish who treated us like family. Nothing was too much for him. And I would whole heartedly say he will be the reason for my return to the resort. If you are lucky enough to bump in to this guy I will guarantee your stay will be amazing. Danish thank you very much from me and my wife and thank you to the staff of Maradiva. We will definitely see you guys again

I took my mother on a vacation of a lifetime in May, and after several days of travel from the western US, we finally arrived at the Sands. We were picked up from the airport and the driver was very nice and got us to the hotel, and once we walked in, we were blown away. The reception area was beautiful and the views spectacular. We were shown our room and it was spacious, and clean with great views out the balcony. As we put our items away a gentleman came to give us a Covid screening. (we laughed because he was wearing a lab coat...) We relaxed by the pool, or played in the water and the staff was always making sure we had everything we needed. The food was very good, but some things were better than others. It was fun to try new dishes that are not part of the cuisine at home. On our first evening my mother wanted wine, and Rahja was very helpful and found her one. From that evening onward, he came to talk to her each meal and made her feel like the most valued visitor there. They laughed and joked a lot. He found her a few more bottles during our stay as well! He was by far her favorite staff member. Soudesh was of great assistance to us, booking off site adventures for us, and arranging transportation. He also asked the kitchen to make me some of their banana jam to take home, as I loved it so much. We used the spa as well, and my mother got the best massage, and mine was only mediocre. The beach at the Sands is also the best along that shoreline, so it's much easier to walk on than further down as it bites into your feet a bit. What made the Sands so nice is how warm and caring the staff was. They felt like family and they seemed to really care about you and really wishing you to have a great vacation. We stayed on the opposite shore after a trip to Reunion Island, and missed that, and wished we were back at the Sands. If I am able to return to Mauritius, I would definitely pick the Sands for my stay!

The hotel has a few flaws, but if you do not pay attention to them, the rest will be fine. The location is super, everything is nearby. Sea across the road, bus stop 50 meters away. Very good for this price. If you want five stars this is not the place.
