My partner and I are big fans of Mcmennamins and were excited for The Grand Lodge. The majority of our stay was exactly what you expect; decent food, great drinks, and people who seem to love their jobs. The only hiccup that did sour our trip was on our last night we had been making our rounds to the bars that were open, everyone was great as usual until we got to The Doctor’s Office. The bartender there had something against our presence despite the fact we were his only customers. I could hash it all out on here but that wouldn’t be fair to all the other great employees who we encountered. Hopefully whatever was going on in that guy’s life was a one off. We had an all around good time. The room was clean and comfortable (our ac wasn’t working but the staff was very apologetic and accommodating for the inconvenience). And of course we got the fun and mystery of staying a Mcmennamins.

We like to stay at the Grand Lodge but the service was really poor on this stay. Employees were rude on multiple occasions for simple requests like getting ice or trying to get coffee in the morning. Felt unwelcome an like we were an inconvenience whenever we left the room.

My wife and I recently traveled to Forest Grove to see Lyle Lovett at this venue. We were originally told you could see the stage from Pat's corner, the closest restaurant, but that was not true. You cannot see the stage and should not plan to enjoy any concert from this restaurant (just a tip). This was a really fun place to stay, and very much of an original experience. McMenamins has done a wonderful job with this property. Everything about it feels original, eclectic and like you're staying at someone's home rather than a resort or hotel. Perhaps a hotel in the 1920s would be a more accurate estimate. The property is so fun, with multiple different bars that open and close throughout the day. Each is its own experience and offers something different. We had prime rib and a standard cheeseburger the first night and they were delicious. I do enjoy prime rib but haven't found it done very well in Portland or on the west coast for that matter. This was cooked perfectly, sumptuous with the appropriate garnishments. The potatoes were perhaps softer and whipped with more butter than I would have preferred but they certainly did go down well. The cheeseburger was also done very well. The bartenders in service staff were all friendly and seem to be enjoying themselves. There was no problem ordering specialty cocktails that weren't listed. The room was its own experience. Nothing like a standard hotel room with that sterile feeling that so often accompanies hotels. This felt like a home, complete with a selection of books that were fun to peruse. The bathroom and shower were very clean, complete with a hair dryer that my wife would actually use, ( this is really saying something). If you know, you know. Some might worry that in a building this old the air conditioning might not work. It was 95° outside and 67° in our room, easily modified. Well it wasn't the least expensive place to stay, which probably had something to do with a fact that Lyle Lovett was staying here for his concert. I would definitely come back again, if just to try the warm soaking pool which looked inviting. There is a friendly staff with an excellent product available at a reasonable price.

A hotels with 4 bars but no toilet in our room, I wonder who designed this. Sadists? JK Our basement room had no airflow, it was quite warm, no screen on window with many flies trying to get in once we opened it. This hotel is very quirky, old, unique and not for the average folks who anticipate regular hotel amenities like AC, ice machines nearby, and a toilet in room. Considering beer is McMenamins specialty, it’s very inconvenient to not have a toilet in the room after enjoying the beers, Service was hit or miss, with mostly young inexperienced servers that seemed to have good intentions. Better management support is needed. There was no parking to drop off luggage- they expect you to carry your luggage from the parking lot up many stairs. For almost $200 a night, it’s not worth it. We did enjoy the delicious coffee and calm soaking pool. The concert wasn’t great with $4 waters and mediocre chairs for rent at $10. Plus the stage is right next to a busy road so you can hear sirens and loud cars while the music is playing. It was an experience!

Disappointed. Claustrophobic rooms with no windows or ventilation, poor service and staff attitude, and highly overpriced food of mediocre quality. The hotel decor truly has a lot of charm, but unfortunately the experience falls way short of expectations, particularly in the area of service and attitude. Not a welcoming vibe.
