Gloucester Hotels with Bars

We'd initially booked the Quays Room - positioned as ”executive plus” on the website. Making the usual allowances for the building being old, this was a horrible room. The carpet looked like it needed a deep, deep clean; the ceiling had massive cracks, but the real kicker was the windows. The website for the hotel says: ”Located on the first floor of the manor house, this room offers views of the roof top terrace.” Does it, though? Or does one window look out onto a small area surrounded by walls on all four sides? Kind of an accidental void caused by the layout, rather than the sort of thing you'd expect from a ”roof terrace”. As a side note, you could gain access to this - ahem - terrace via an unlocked door in the corridor, which means that literally anyone could, should they choose, pitch up outside your bedroom window. Hold on, though - it's a dual aspect room. The second window looks out on a scene so grim they've permanently boarded it up with wooden slats, which you can fiddle with and squint through to see some more roofs. Absolutely understand that not every room can look out onto the Gloucestershire coutryside, but if you're booking a room pitched as being not merely executive, but executive plus, and priced accordingly, you don't expect to wind up in a space that would have been considered a bit much for the First Mrs Rochester. We elected to change rooms - paying a whack extra for a room above the spa. Like the Quays, this also wasn't worth the price being asked, but we rationalised that the additional £40 a night was a surcharge in order to not be spending time in the miserable Executive Plus level. The spa side of the hotel is better - it felt a lot cleaner, the rooms are currently being renovated and upgraded (ominous that a management response here says they're only overhauling 20 of their bedrooms, as this implies the Tumbledown Manor side are going to be left untouched.) The walk-in shower is brilliant, but feel sorry for the cleaning staff as the floor hasn't been laid properly so it doesn't quite drain properly and must be a faff to clean. The rooms further up the corridor appear to have actual, proper balconies - ours didn't, as the pool was beneath us and for some reason they'd decided we weren't allowed to get onto the terrace outside our room. We had a bit of a view across the garden to the trees, although much of it was of the green roof of the pool. You can't control the temperature of the room at all - the first night it was way too hot, but there wasn't even an off switch for the heated towel rail. We opened the windows and just about made the room bearable. The common areas of the hotel had radiators blasting out at high levels - maybe something was broken as a lot of doors were propped open the next, more bearable, day (including external doors, which was cooling but interesting from a security perspective.) We stayed here for two nights while visiting Gloucester. The hotel was well run and clean, two staff on reception, and we were greeted by another member of staff and offered a cold drink as we had to wait for a few minutes to check in. Breakfast is a buffet but the quality of the food was decent although they had unfortunately not had a delivery of sausages on the Bank Holiday Monday. We didn't eat in the restaurant or drink in the bar as the prices were too high.

Stayed for two nights on the 24/25 August. The images on there website is not a true reflection of what we actually experienced. The mattress was really thin and uncomfortable. There was no door to the shower cubicle. Once flushed the toilet took over an hour to refill, did report the problem but nothing was done. As for breakfast not the best experience, on both days had to ask for cutlery. The spoons that were there for cereals were soup spoons, the glasses for fruit juice were clearly dirty. The toaster didn’t work properly. The first day at breakfast the waitress looked as if she didn’t want to be bothered, she was even serving you with her coat on very unprofessional. Overall not a good experience. Won’t be recommending this place.

Hotel parking is chargeable, breakfast is good, decent express hotel, rooms are clean, some roads to Gloucester Cathedral, we parked the car on the parking lot of the supermarket near the Cathedral

Went for afternoon tea with my sister to celebrate her birthday Had a table on the terrace with a lovely view The tea was really good Sandwiches lovely and fresh with a good selection and very nice selection of cakes too Would definitely go again we had a very enjoyable afternoon Used a buy a gift voucher which was also no trouble for the staff who were very friendly and helpful No complaints at all

Stuck in the middle of a horribly stressful house move, I really needed this place to be exactly what it was - peaceful, clean and reasonably priced. The staff were very kind but not in my face the whole time and it was perfectly placed for everything I needed. The room was a bigger one than I actually paid for and I would definitely stay there again if I needed to. I would recommend it to anyone.

Room was nice, clean and plenty of storage space. Decent size bathroom with shower over bath. Ample parking outside. Ate in the restaurant two evenings and each time several items were not available from the menu. At breakfast there was no butter, Nutella, pastries or rolls and only one jam. Waiting staff were very apologetic but I guess a management problem 🤷‍♀️. Ordered an omelette both days which was freshly cooked and very tasty. Only drawback is they have no lift so if you can’t manage several stairs, request a ground floor room.

Very convenient location a short drive from the M5 and it has plenty of free parking. Easy check-in with a friendly receptionist. There is a lift, handy as our room was on the top floor (3). The room was a Standard Double but was very spacious and there was adequate storage for our 2-person 3-night stay. No air-con but the windows could be opened a few inches and heating was easily controlled. All was clean, tidy and in perfect condition. Our bed was very comfortable with plenty of pillows and a warm duvet. It was quiet at night with little road noise. The room curtains were very efficient, best set your alarm to avoid sleeping in. Also was desk space with an office-type chair and a long sofa that presumably can be the third bed, a TV, hair dryer and tea/coffee making facilities. The free WiFi was fast and reliable. The bathroom was also spotless and had that clever door arrangement that enables the whole bathroom or just the WC to be made private. The spacious shower was excellent with a shower gel dispenser. The attraction with HI-Ex hotels is the included breakfast, so there are no costly shocks you often get with budget hotels. Unusually, but very welcome, it opened at 6:30 a.m. The food offer buffet was more than adequate, hot sausage, bacon, beans, scrambled egg, plus a choice of cereal, croissants, toast, and fresh fruit. Tea/coffee of course, plus baps so if in a hurry you could make a bacon bap and dash off. If you can't find anything to like here then you really are hard to please! As all the staff were very friendly and helpful this made it a lovely place to stay and I wouldn't hesitate to come back.
