Corentin_96Vintage touch with a carpet and wooden desk. I loved it. Spacious rooms for the price with a bathtub. Only drawback. There are no power sockets next to the bed. Perfect location next to the castle. I have not heard any noise at night. Super quiet.

A bit chilly, but otherwise perfect. It's very close to the train station, making transportation convenient, and there are many great food options nearby. The restaurant's breakfast is excellent. It's a perfect retreat, quiet yet centrally located, and the service attitude is also very good.

Guest UserWe stayed for two nights as our bathroom is being replaced at home.
This is a former Premier Inn which retains the 'footprint' and build/comfort standard of a PI. The rooms have showers instead of baths which is perfect for me. I rang ahead and requested a ground floor room which was honoured- we were given room 2 which met our needs and requirements.
Bed was really comfortable, tv had limited channels but I was able to log into my Netflix. There is hanging space for your clothes, a hair dryer and plenty of sockets, none by the bed though. The WiFi was adequate for our needs.
There is free, secure parking provided at the rear of the hotel - you need a code to exit so as safe as can be. No noise considering the M4 motorway and main A48 sandwich the hotel.
There is a restaurant for food but we didn't use it. Menu was a bit pricey but has good reviews.
All the staff that we met were friendly. The Receptionists were lovely and a big shout out to Alice who sorted our return visit next week when we get back from holiday.
For the money it's excellent value for a clean, friendly place to stay.

Loved your hotel. We had a fantastic king room with sea views & the bed was very comfortable. Didn’t have the evening meal there but loved the breakfast, it was the best we’ve ever had. Location was superb.

I have a really mixed feeling about this hotel. I booked the superior room with tree lined view and asked for a quiet room: the receptionist gave me an extremely cold and noisy room right next to the motorway and above some nightclubs. My watch has identified the noise level is over the normal limit. I couldn’t fall asleep due to the loud noise even at midnight. I called the receptionist to change a room. Unfortunately, they first gave me a standard room that the heating system was not working and much smaller than I have paid for. The two maintenance officers who came to check the heating system are very helpful and suggested to change to another room. Only by then, I was able to change to another room that matched the similar sized of a superior room, but without tree lined view. I must say that all the receptionists were friendly and polite but behind their friendliness, they are not really helpful at all. I had my dinner, a sea bass meal, at the restaurant - see the photo. The dinner and the service was both outstanding. The kettle in the room was not very clean; it could easily be cleaned by using small spray to remove the calcium. The gym and swimming pool are excellent. If you are not used to live in really loud room, please double check with the receptionists. It is also not worth to pay an extra 10 pounds per night to get a so called tree lined room with extreme loud noise. I also wonder the reason for the hotel to give customers rooms that the heating system are not working. It would helpful to check before they allocate room to customers. It would also helpful that the hotel ensure that the room has reasonable temperature before admitting guests, esp on a very cold winter night. Overall, this is not a very good experience. I was not able to sleep for a whole night. I paid extra in the hope of getting a better and quiet room but ended up with one of the worst room without getting any compensation.

Guest Userstayed at this hotel and used the spa many times before and have always had a much better experience, which is why I chose to return. Unfortunately, my stay on 27 May 2026 was extremely disappointing.
When checking in, I was asked if I would like breakfast and was told it was very nice. Sadly, the breakfast was awful. The bacon was so hard it could barely be cut, the sausages were stone cold, and the rest of the cooked breakfast was dry and cold. I mentioned this to a waitress, who showed no concern, and when I raised it again at reception and asked for a refund, I was refused. I have attached a photo showing the quality of the breakfast.
I was also disappointed to discover there was an additional charge to use the spa. I booked through Trip.com, and nowhere on my booking confirmation did it mention extra spa fees. When I queried this at reception and showed my booking details, I was simply told I should have checked the hotel’s website. I do not feel this is acceptable, as any additional charges should be clearly stated at the time of booking.
What disappointed me most was the lack of customer service throughout my stay. My concerns about both the breakfast and the spa charges were dismissed rather than addressed, and staff showed very little understanding or willingness to help.
This experience was completely different from the positive stays I have had at this hotel in the past. Sadly, based on this visit, I would not recommend the hotel and will think very carefully before returning. I hope management takes these concerns seriously and works to improve both the customer service and overall guest experience.

Guest UserGood location not far from centre of Cardiff. Service was poor, receptionists seemed like they didn’t want to be working there and breakfast staff like their family had just died. That said the breakfast was good quality and the room was good. Needed some cobwebs removed and mould cleaned from bathroom

The stay was really good overall the room was clean, comfortable, and everything went smoothly. The staff were friendly and helpful, which made the experience even better.
However, I was a bit disappointed that I had to pay £16 for parking for the whole day. It would have been nice if parking was included in the stay or at least offered at a reduced rate for guests.
Apart from that, everything else was great and I enjoyed my stay

I’m so glad we decided to stay at The Coal Exchange Hotel in Cardiff. I’d been given the very important job of finding a place to stay overnight for my friend’s special birthday. I didn’t really know where to start, so I compared prices of hotels in the area. I was surprised to find that the ‘budget’ hotels Premier Inn and Travelodge were no cheaper than The Coal Exchange for the given dates! I had a look at the photos and reviews and it looked perfect for a special occasion. It was steeped in history with the interior design staying true to the period in which it was built. Originally, as there were five of us, I had booked the sextuplet room. It looked amazing and we were all really excited about staying there. Unfortunately though, due to maintenance work being carried out on that part of the building, we had to change our plans to three double rooms right next to each other. The rooms were beautiful. Floor to ceiling double windows, opulent wallpaper, ornate period furniture and a lovely comfortable centrepiece bed.
The bathrooms had gorgeous jacuzzi baths and stone basins.
The following morning we had a delicious breakfast in Culley’s Restaurant situated inside the Coal Exchange.
The staff here are very friendly and go out of their way to ensure you have the best stay.
Can’t wait to go back.

imodeeeIt’s about a 10-minute walk from Cardiff Station to the hotel.
The location is very convenient.
However, there is no parking available, so it may be inconvenient for those traveling by car.
I think it’s fine if you just need a place to sleep.
Please note that it is not the kind of hotel you would expect from Novotel or Ibis.
The room was spacious and comfortable.
There was a window, but it could not be opened.
The room had a hairdryer and a safe, but no refrigerator.
