Chonor House

It was a once in a lifetime experience stay which room is all contained by Norbulingka arts. I could watch Himalaya mountains from the window.

A quaint guest house more than a hotel. Be prepared to take your bags up a hill and then climb stairs to get to the reception. Our room was small but had a lovely view of the mountains and the temple further up the hill. The beds were comfortable and the hot water worked well. The breakfast croissants are nice but everything else was average. McLeod Ganj being a hill station it would be perfectly normal to expect everything to be up a hill or down a hill. The yoga shala has a spectacular view and we were lucky to have a gong meditation there.

Great location,great rooms and friendly staff

The guesthouse entrance is up a very steep narrow road and there are further steep steps to reception. We were warmly welcomed with a cup of honey tea and our bags were carried from the car for us. Our room was in an annex opposite the reception area. It was shabby and very basic but we accepted it and went out to explore. The real problems started when we tried to sleep. The generator outside our window was off and on all night - I was told it drove the air con for the kitchen freezers. Then the stray dogs who had been sleeping peacefully in the alleyway during the day came alive once it got dark and again at various times throughout the night and early morning. We asked the night receptionist if any other rooms were available but were told not but she would leave a note for the manager. We spoke with the manager next morning and were moved to a much nicer room at reception level at no extra cost. Although it was still possible to hear the generator in this room it wasn’t so bad. The dogs however are a permanent problem. You should also be aware that there is building work ongoing on the 3rd floor which I believe was the restaurant. Breakfast was taken in the lounge. All of the staff we approached were very helpful but they must have been aware of the generator noise and hopefully something will be done about it.

This is a wonderful hotel. My family of 5 had two rooms for nearly a month’s long stay. Chonor is a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of McLeod Ganj. It’s wonderfully situated in the midst of McLeod but off the beaten path. It’s very well managed, with a friendly and helpful staff. The food was great too. Each of our rooms had a private balcony with beautiful views of the mountains and the Kangra valley. I wouldn’t stay anywhere else in McLeod Ganj.

I have traveled in India both in 5 stars hotels and low budget ones and one thing I must say is that hospitality is not related with that. Hospitality for me is human care and the hability to offer what the best we have. Since day one that I contacted Chonor House in September 2023, that I felt the warmth, care and attention which I expect from a place that honors hospitality. I knew that Chonor House was one of the first choices for those who want to be near His Holiness Temple and also for hosting several events within Buddhist Comunity, so I was looking forwarding to stay there with some expectations. We were told that some construction was happening from 9am to 5pm but since we are early birds that wasn't a problem for us, and also they changed us to a room that was available as far as possible from the noise when it became available. Both rooms were very confortable and the detail of having a warm water bottle in the bed after arriving from the cold streets warmed not only the bed but also my heart. They have also an umbrella per room at our disposal which was very useful since we got some rainy days. Chonor House is a very beautiful place, cozy and mostly I felt very well taken care off. Lastly but not least...Best banana's pancake with Syrup ever!! Defined a place to return too.

The hotel was perfect for our vacation. The staff was friendly, the food was delicious, and the cleanliness was exceptional. The staff's behavior was welcoming and warm. We stayed for three weeks and didn't miss home at all. The sunset view was beautiful. The location was convenient. We will definitely return and stay again.

While the rooms were so so beautiful with hand painted walls, I felt the hotel is not easy to locate when you reach Mcleodganj. There are no signboards leading us to the hotel. Th pronounciation of the hotel is also not the way it's written in English but it should be pronounced in hindi ( ch as in च जी चोनूर)It has alot of stairs so be prepared for walking, since we were travelling with children they gave us a room at a lower level. Food at th restaurant is priced higher (almost double) when compared with outside eateries. We tried th steamed momos and they were delicious. The breakfast is not buffet style so you have to ask and order which for me was alot of unnecessary to and fro.

Lots of charm, nice staff, room large with nice wall painting. But the breakfast just OK, the heating in room was poor (went on and off all night) and no heat in bathroom, and it is a steep, fairly long walk to center of town.
