I’ve just got back from a spa package which included afternoon tea and we also booked a massage as an extra. Firstly I want to say that this review is no reflection on the staff within the spa. The receptionist was lovely and very accommodating and the therapist was brilliant, one of the best massages that I’ve had. The spa is small but the staff make sure that it isn’t overcrowded and they manage the changeover well. However, the steam room wasn’t working properly, parts of the hydrotherapy pool were not working and the water was a few degrees colder than would have been ideal, and while I appreciate that the pool needs to be chlorinated, the chemicals were so strong they made our eyes burn. When we went through to have afternoon tea we were asked on arrival if we had any allergies, I confirmed that we hadn’t but asked if it would be possible to have one of the sandwiches made without the dressing, I was told that this is not possible and if we wanted a plain sandwich we’d have to pay £10. We only wanted 1 slice of bread and a small piece of ham! I had assumed that the sandwiches would be made fresh and that requesting to have one without any dressing would not be a huge issue, however I was wrong. Apparently I should have emailed in advance to let the kitchen know, the waiter was not interested in even attempting to accommodate our request. I did query what would have happened if myself or my sister had an allergy to mustard and was told that the situation would be the same and we would be made to pay extra. The waiter even took it upon himself to double down on this by printing out an email that had been sent through to me about allergies to prove to me that I should have emailed in advance. I’m just wondering what happened to putting the customer first? I really didn’t think that something that would have cost less than 50p to make would be such a difficult thing to do, I’d understand if we’d been asking to completely change the order but not 1 measly sandwich! The waiter then proceeded to completely ignore us, until my sister asked for a box to take the cakes home. It was clear that the sandwich’s weren’t freshly made as they were stale, however the cakes and the scone were beautiful. When we arrived my sister and I had already started to plan our next visit, I’d even messaged my husband to say that it would be an ideal place for us to visit for our upcoming anniversary, even overlooking the issues that we had with the spa. However based on the negative experience I’ve had with the waiter, and bear in mind I’m talking about 1 piece of bread and a tiny piece of ham, I doubt that we will return. I truly hope that the 50p that they saved by not remaking the sandwich was worth it!
