When I asked my clients where to stay in Marshalltown, they recommended the Tremont Inn -- located in the absolute center of town -- as a place with local character. I'm very glad I chose it over the chain properties, as it's indeed a Marshalltown original. Rooms are large, and feel even bigger than they are because of the high ceilings and large windows. Most important: My king bed was extremely comfortable; room temperature was simple to control; and the shower had nice water pressure and ample hot water. I also liked that the room had a ceiling fan, which was powerful and silent. Bonus: the Tremont Inn has two nice restaurants -- a quasi fine-dining establishment that's great for drinks and business dining (I had the lamb shank, which was delicious; and my martini glass had been frosted) along with a casual diner-style spot immediately adjacent to the property that's ideal for breakfast and lunch. You can tell the entire property is carefully managed (no surprise since I the owners live on-site. We were introduced at dinner and my colleagues and I saw them again at breakfast the next day). I'd definitely return to this property. In fact, I can't imagine staying anywhere else in Marshalltown.
