Black Rock Lodge is a truly special place in Belize. Me and my wife spent five nights in a Riverfront Deluxe cabin and had a wonderful time there. High points of this place are the location, staff, food and activities. Minuses would be the lack of AC in a hot and humid climate, but it is manageable and I think they have a few cabins with AC. We were picked up at the airport by Jeffry and he drove us to Black Rock with a stop at the Belize Zoo on the way. The Zoo is worth it, it is full of animals native to Belize that have been rescued. Jeffry was very informative there and on the drive to Black Rock. After a long day of travel we had an excellent dinner. We spent two full days just at the lodge enjoying the birds, river and the property. We also visited Caracol, Mountain Pine Ridge and the Green Hills Butterfly Farm. We did a night drive and one early morning birding on our last morning before checking out. Roque was our guide for all of the excursions and he was excellent. He is a great birder but he also gave us a ton of information at Caracol and just general information about Belize, San Ignacio (Where he's from) and anything we had questions about. He also used to work out on Ambergris Caye so he had tips for us for our next stop out there. We had also planned to go to Barton Creek and go birding at Spanish Lookout but unfortunately my wife was a little under the weather for a couple days. The staff were very accommodating in this regard. Victor helped us rearrange our tour so she could rest up and the waitresses were all very concerned and offered tea, medicine and anything we needed while she wasn't feeling well. There's nothing worse than feeling sick while away from home, but the staff made it feel like being taken care of by family. Virginia and Lynette were so nice and caring. The staff at Black Rock are really what make the difference and this is the best staff I have interacted with at any hotel/lodge/resort that I've stayed at. I think the most important thing to keep in mind is to set your expectations. If you're looking for a plush resort with every creature comfort available, this probably isn't the place for you. If you want to be immersed in nature, in a stunning, remote location and learn a wealth of information about Belize and all it has to offer then this is the place to be. I generally don't do well with heat and I was able to adjust to 90 degree weather with 75-80% humidity. I sweat a lot but it was worth it. There are some bugs, but no mosquitoes. The food is excellent. The cabins are very nice and spacious and the views are stunning. The birds, reptiles and howler monkeys are spectacular. Once again, the staff are amazing. I can't say enough good things about them. Black Rock is a special place and absolutely worth visiting.
