Senshinkan Matsuya

9.8/10
Outstanding

Fussy New Yorker
I had a large tatami room with side sitting area and sink as well as an ante-room. I had three delicious Japanese meals at the ryokan that were served with polite elegance. The two in-house onsen baths were a joy to use after a day of skiing. The staff was knowledgeable about how to get around by the buses and suggested the best restaurants for days that I did not eat at the ryokan. Senshinkan Matsuya was situated in the center of.Shibu Onsen town next to three of the public onsen. I could not ask for a better stay!

Just wanna share my experience of staying in this beautiful hotel. 1- The location and the views from the hotel are just amazing! Especially during sunsets! 2- The personal and stuff of the hotel are super super friendly, if I could I would give 10 stars for the hospitality. 3- Onsens and the view are something out from this world 4- What I was really amazed is the kitchen and the chef that is cooking. If you stay in this hotel I highly recommend take the breakfast and dinners. You will have a high class food with a presentation and explanation of each dish by the servant. Best experience 5- Last but not the least I forgot my speaker in the hotel. The stuff brought it back the same day to me to another hotel I moved after NISHIHOPPO. So guys, less words more actions! 10 stars to this amazing hotel and it’s owner. My respect.

Amazing family run ryokan just few minutes drive from Snow Monkey Park. Booked a room with a private in-room onsen but it didn't make much sense as the bath was hot but there was no hot water in the shower. The room was spacious with comfortable beds and futon. Nice yukatas and socks were provided in the room. Public baths in the ryokan are great (especially outdoor area), we tried both of them. The kaiseki dinner and japanese breakfast are VERY delicious. The staff and the owner are so nice and welcoming. The free transfer to the Monkey Park is available at 9:45 am

Our family made a special trip from Tokyo to Nagano, and besides exploring the surrounding attractions, watching the snow monkeys soaking in the hot springs of Nozawa, and visiting the Togakushi Shrine, the highlight of this trip was staying at Issa no Komichi Biyu no Yado. Initially, we had modest expectations, thinking of it as just another experience. However, upon arriving in the snowy Yudanaka Shibu Onsen, we were immediately impressed by the warm and professional hospitality. From the thoughtful reception to the exquisite dinner and the unique public onsen, every aspect exceeded our expectations and left us pleasantly surprised. This wasn’t just a hotel stay—it was an unforgettable journey into the heart of Japanese onsen culture. If you’re planning a trip to Nagano, this is definitely a place worth visiting to experience the perfect blend of hot springs and nature!

Shibu Onsen KOKUYA

9.3/10
Great

Located in the heart of Shibu Onsen, Kokuya is a traditional Japanese inn that has been operating for over 400 years. It's the only inn in the area with its own six different 100% natural hot spring baths, featuring eight public baths and ten rooms with open-air hot springs. It has been passed down through 16 generations. Furthermore, the central area of Shibu Onsen boasts a 1300-year-old hot spring town with nine public onsen (hot spring baths) for hotel guests and residents. The ninth onsen is the largest, featuring a golden bath and a sauna. Next to it is a hot spring shrine and foot bath, right next to Kokuya. Kokuya's hot springs are rich in minerals, beneficial for improving muscle, joint, and skin problems. A free shuttle bus (approximately 3km) takes guests to Jigokudani (Hell Valley) to see snow monkeys and enjoy the hot springs. A free shuttle bus connects to the train station, and freshly cooked onsen eggs (100 yen each) are available at the inn's entrance. The hotel boasts a clean and elegant interior with maze-like corridors and wooden staircases. There are dedicated luggage handlers (three floors in total), creating a perfect setting for a period drama, reminiscent of Yubaba's old house in Spirited Away… The hotel also offers traditional Japanese kaiseki dinners with over nine dishes. Ingredients are freshly delivered from Nagano. The menu changes monthly according to the season. Vegetarian options are also available (please inform us in advance). All guest rooms are designed in a traditional Japanese style, featuring Japanese-style bedding and a bathroom with a sink, TV, safe, refrigerator, towels, and yukata. Ten guest rooms have private outdoor baths. The hotel is surrounded by several temples of varying sizes and different springs nestled in the mountains. The water temperatures of these springs vary, with the highest reaching 56°C. Municipal water supplies are provided to each household. Several bridges connect the two sides of the river in front, including a red-painted bridge that resembles a scene from Spirited Away. I suspect that Miyazaki Toshiro may have drawn inspiration from this place… A very nice hotel and hot springs; the staff are polite and attentive.

Nozawa Grand Hotel

Everything about this hotel was perfect, except for its location being a bit far from the ski lifts. I mainly chose this hotel because it's one of the few in Nozawa Onsen with private bathrooms. The dinners were incredibly generous every night. The room temperature was just right, heated by AC but never cold. The staff were very welcoming and helpful.

Shibu Onsen Koishiya Ryokan

We loved staying in Koishiya! It is a lovely, quaint, cozy, homey ryokan and the service was excellent. We booked this property at the last minute because we decided to spend the night in Nagano just a week prior to the start of our trip and we are so glad we did. Shibu Onsen is a super cute town. It being covered in snow when we were there made it all the more magical. The members of the staff were super warm, acommodating, generous and conversed well in English. They picked us up from Snow Monkey Park even though it's not part of their service. We didn't know this because we haven't yet read the hotel orientation materials by then. The owner of a snack store in Monkey Park arranged the pick up for us because it looked like we were so tired from walking. Thank you so much for picking us up, Koishiya!! We stayed in the annex and we had the whole building to ourselves. It was really a memorable stay for us. They also dropped us off at Yudanaka Station after check out. Thank you, Koishiya and hope to stay there again, soon!

Hotel Housei

Since it was cheaper than other ryokans in the area, I didn’t expect much. But to my surprise, it offered full service—just like the more expensive ryokans I’ve stayed at before! They even provided a pickup service from the train station, which I forgot to book. Luckily, a Western couple sitting next to me on the train had reserved it. When I saw the “Hotel Housei” sign on the van outside the station, I hopped in! The hotel is a bit far from the station and involves walking up and down hills, so carrying luggage all the way would have been quite tough. I was really fortunate to catch that ride! Cherry blossoms were in full bloom along the river, just a few steps from the hotel—such a beautiful sight. The room wasn’t large, but it had enough space and was very comfortable. The elderly gentleman at the front desk seemed to speak multiple languages—he even knew some Thai! He was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The onsen was wonderful. The indoor bath was a bit too hot for me, but the outdoor bath was cooler and more relaxing. Breakfast was a buffet, which was decent. In conclusion, this place was absolutely worth it. Next time, if I go skiing in Shiga Kogen or bring someone to see the snow monkeys, I’ll definitely remember to book the pick-up and drop-off service in advance!

Hoshikawakan

We really enjoyed our week long stay at Hoshikawakan in Jan 2026. We have been driving around Hakuba for 4 weeks to visit various ski resorts and spent our last week at Hoshikawakan to visit Shiga Kogen. The room was spacious and clean with a small toilet like most Japanese hotels but there was a large public onsen and 2 smaller private onsens that can be reserved once each day for 30mins so you could always take your shower in the onsens like the locals do especially later at night about 10-11pm where I was the only one in the public onsen. The hotel had a lovely buffet breakfast spread with local soba, Japnese curry, cold minced sashimi fish, grill fish station, fried eggs station that will keep you adequately fed for the day's ski trip - it even has a hot drink station with free oden daily at 3-5.30pm which we enjoyed as a snack after a hard day of skiiing. The service was excellent too with the staff helpfully arranging to ship our ski equipment directly to Hanade Airport, daily clearing of snow off the carpark and new towels provided daily. The location in Yudanaka is great too especially if you drive as it is between Shiga Kogen (25-35mins drive) and Kita Shiga Kogen (15-20mins drive) with many attractions like Shibu Onsen, Yudanaka Brewery and Snow Monkey Park within 10-15 drive. There were also ample dinner options nearby within 10-15 mins walk but you may need to try and make reservations by walking in on your first night. The only downside was that the WiFi network is poor and patchy when overloaded by a lot of guests over the weekend but otherwise it was good.
