Central Guest House

Pontypridd|0.92km from city centre
I booked a weekend stay at the Central Guest House as a base of operations for exploring the valleys. It’s located on a steep cul de sac on a hill overlooking Treforest and Pontypridd. It has dedicated parking but there is parking available on the street also if the spaces provided are full which happened to me on the second night. I was given a warm welcome and checked in smoothly. The facilities were pointed out, COVID policy explained, and my breakfast order taken for the morning, then I was shown my room. It was clean and tidy, with a an en-suite bathroom and wardrobe, desk and bedside table. There was a communal room available with tv but I availed myself of the WiFi and Netflix. The walls are quite thin and the floors a little creaky. If you’re a light sleeper this might be a problem but I’m not so I slept well on a firm, comfortable bed. The highlight of the stay was the breakfast, which I recommend you include when you book. The bacon was thick and good quality, as was the sausage. I also had hash brown, tomatoes (not a fan but I hadn’t told them that, beans were supplied on day 2) and toast. I was given the option to have orange juice as well as coffee and more was available if I wished. I felt like nothing was too much trouble. Overall, I enjoyed my stay. I think it would be a much more vibrant place if COVID restrictions weren’t in place and would be a good place to stay if you want a convivial atmosphere. I’m quite the introvert and I appreciated that this was noticed and respected. Checking out was as simple as leaving the key on the reception desk and bidding them a fond farewell. I don’t like messy break ups. I’d stay at Central Guest House again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone who likes the traditional B&B experience.

Llechwen Hall

When arriving for the first time you know this will be very rural when you have to drive around the cattle grazing on the road. The hotel is about a mile down a narrow lane at the top of a hill. The views from the top are superb. There is sufficient parking, though the overflow car park can be hard to spot. It's hard to think that you are just 30 minutes or so from Cardiff city centre. Check in was straightforward and the room was a little larger than the average double hotel room. It had all the usual facilities and bonus: this hotel still puts out biscuits! Breakfast was booked in 30 minute slots, the menu is excellent and it is freshly cooked. There is also a buffet of cereals, pastries etc. Staff were friendly and the service was excellent. We visit Cardiff quite often and, rather than find a hotel in the city, I think we will make this our first choice in the future. Footnote for EV drivers; I could see no charge point here. The nearest town with a decent number seems to be Caerphilly, about 6 or 7 miles away.

Stayed one night to save having to leave at an ungodly hour from Liverpool for a visit to the University. Lovely welcome from Reception. The twin room was great and perfect for us. The tea and coffee making facilities are adequate, there are plenty of plug sockets and USB ports, lots of coat hangers and a luggage rack, a flat screen TV (I had no problems with it, which is unusual for me with hotel room TVs!) and a hairdryer in the room. In the bathroom were soaps, shampoos and shower gels and plenty of towels. The room was quiet and the beds really comfortable and we slept like babies! Breakfast was lovely. I had the full Welsh breakfast (minus the cockles!) there was lots of it and it was delicious! My daughter had the continental breakfast and there was a lot of choice - cereals, fruits, pastries, yoghurts, etc. I thought the breakfasts were great value for money and the restaurant staff were friendly and professional, as were all the members of the hotel staff. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend to anyone visiting the area.
