Sol Dunas

Spent a week here with my mum and my 4 year old son in the Easter holidays. We booked to stay in the Sol Dunas but think we were staying in the Melia Dunas part. Its impossible to tell where one hotel ends and the other begins, it just feels like one big resort Top tip: soon as you arrive find out how to book your evening a la carte restaurants (when we were here you had to go to Odessy piano bar (inside) from 10.30am). They get booked up quickly. We only dinned in Atlantis and Sahel and both were great Childrens entertainment was excellent. Lollo and Bernie (plus Astrid and the other kids club staff) really made our holiday. My son loved them. The 5.30pm mini disco was a huge hit. I understand this (Lollo and Bernie program of events) has now all finished for the season although the hotel also had kids club facilities. Food and drink. ”Spices” is the buffet restaurant and ”Mosiac” (they are in the same building) is the part open for snacks outside of main meal times . We enjoyed the food. Ate salads all week and some of the meat. Did feel a bit samey at times but we could always find something to eat. You can also have lunch at Aqua which is pizza and pasta and is table service. So nice to mix it up and go there. The a la carte restaurants for evening meals also help provide variety. Coffee is best ordered at the bars, it doesnt taste nice out of the machine in Spices. We were also happy with the selection of drinks served in the various pool/beach bars Kids splash pool was another big hit and we spent almost all of our time here. There are some building works happening next to it but they do not disturb you Our room was large and clean. The houskeeping staff did a great job. Only issues (we did not raise this with the hotel at the time so they ve had no opportunity to address this and it didnt really bother us that much) the safe was temperamental it would lock but then sometimes wouldnt open! The plug in our bathroom sink was also a bit problematic, it would get stuck. If u were not careful the shower also flooded the bathroom. Had to be very careful to angle it away from the shower screen (that had a gap at the bottom). Overall we loved our holiday here and we are already discussing booking for next year (as long as Lollo and Bernie are there!!!) Biggest bit of feedback to the hotel would be: you need to make it easier to find out some of the information on restaurants, meal times, events, etc. The QR codes didnt really give enough. A sheet in the room or information pack would be helpful Thanks for a great holiday!
Melia Dunas Beach Resort & Spa
3.4/559 Reviews
Melia Hotel is divided into Melia Dunas and Sol Dunas, both of which belong to Melia. In the same place, the facilities are shared one after the other, but Sol guests can go to Melia for dining and vice versa. The hotels are all white. There are no descent, it can be said that almost all the hotels in Cape Verde are like this, and most of them are white elderly couples, not many young people, singles are not, and you do n’t need to think about looking for a chance. The room is large and comfortable, the disadvantage is that there are many mosquitoes. After check out, you can still enjoy all the facilities and have a bathroom and a dressing room. One price all-inclusive buffet type is OK, not a lot. The service is very good, you have to answer questions. More recommended hotel near Santa Maria Beach in the south, it's so beautiful!
Hilton Cabo Verde SAL Resort

The best hotel in the whole island of Sal, except for Riu, is Hilton. Unfortunately, there is no Riu at the time of booking, but Hilton is very new, the decoration is very beautiful, and the facilities in the room are very modern. The hotel swimming pool is very large, the beach is outside, the greening is very good, the photo is beautiful, but the room is a little far from the beach, only half of the sea view room.

I will start with the positive as all two of them. The sun shone. The staff outside of reception are amazing but reception need to learn customer service and how to speak to people I and about 8 other people did not appreciate being shouted at by one particular man after a mistake was made by the manager and a certain speciality restaurant booking. Now to my honest review. This hotel is 3* masquerading as 5*. The food is repetitive in the buffet and cooked and covered with cling film then left to sit on the side for hours, Specialist restaurants not worth booking food equally rubbish. Cooks coughing and spluttering while cooking. Myself and several other guests had severe food poisoning and spent days in our rooms. The cups/glasses in the bedrooms are rinsed out and left to dry. I know this for a fact as one glass had a chip in and remained the whole 2 weeks we were there. If you add the bottle water to the tap water this will also make you ill. The bed linen was never changed and had holes in, hand towels had to be constantly requested. There is damp in the room, I could have picked off the paint which was damp to the touch and clothes smell musty. The walk to the beach is through manned security then you are mobbed by local vendors hassling you to buy a (uninsured) trip with them. The sea is too dangerous to swim in and no umbrellas or anything but beer and soft drinks in the beach bar then you have to run the gauntlet passed the vendors back to the hotel again. Cocktails are nasty and pre-made and spirits cheap local rubbish and sexual advances made at pool bar by one particular guy serving. No waiter service by the pool so everyone has to queue for ages not what is expected in a 5* hotel. Sunbed wars start at 6am after 9am no beds available as reserved by people who rock up after 10am! Children ran round this adult only hotel reception and pool area. The cafe opens after 10am which is a shame as they were usually ok but you can get from the reception bar if the guy serving can eventually get your order right - usually 3 attempts. For a £3000pp trip I could cry at the waste of money and we counted down the days to come home. It is advertised as a hotel in a prime location and don’t be deceived by the description online. It’s not, it’s in the middle of no where and we certainly didn’t feel safe wandering round. Also be warned the airport is horrific and poorly ran with hundreds of people sat on the floor in the heat and flies. Do your research before you go.
Hotel Riu Palace Santa Maria

Fantastic stay over Christmas. 2nd stay at this hotel. The staff very friendly and hotel very clean. Food selection is excellent. Just a couple of things would make this a 5*. Sun loungers around pool areas need cushions as can be very uncomfortable. Having to ask 3 times for bar top up in room and water for the room as only done once through whole week, was told on arrival that they would do this every 2nd day even when requested through app and reception Having background music in bar lounge area would be nice as we found the entertainment area (only entertainment area) too busy and loud. Bathroom night light very annoying as lights up whole bedroom area and staying on for ages.
