A friend and I were on a road trip through India in Oct. 2024 and we stayed at Hotel East Bourne, Shimla for three nights. This hotel is so different to the standard block hotels with corridors and a straight lines of room after room. This is a unique place tucked into a hillside and overlooking a pine forest. It is a wonderful, serence place. There are multiple terraces and garden spaces all adding to the special character. The reception staff are very warm and welcoming, the rooms are large and the restaurant serves a wonderful selection of dishes. The location of the hotel too is convenient for walking around and exploring the neighbourhood and shops. The only area of improveent I would suggest is to further train the restaurant staff to listen - listen to what the guest is saying. Our experience was that the wait staff simply want to please and say YES to everything but have not listened to your request. Example: on a few occassions, we asked for our meal to be less spicy. The waiter said the usual: "Yes sir, OK sir" but did not relay the message to the chef. Each time we asked for a mild dish, it was the same response "OK sir", but never takenm to the chef. Other than that, this is a gem of a place. Visitors to Shimla should look here first before looking at the standard block hotes which are all the same.
