Yuno Onsen is located in Shunan City, which is said to be the birthplace of puffer fish fishing. It is a quiet hot spring resort in the mountains. This is my second time visiting Yuno Onsen. This time I stayed at Shisuien, which is located at the very back. It is the oldest inn in Yuno Onsen, and is built on a 13,000m2 site. It has a main building, a detached guest room building called a villa, a detached building, Ranseitei, and a hot spring building. It is a quaint inn where you can walk to each guest room through a corridor that spans a magnificent Japanese garden with a pond where carp and ducks swim. This time I stayed at Ranseitei. This building, built by a Kyoto shrine carpenter, is made of an abundance of fine wood, and is imposing despite the fact that it has been built for a long time. There is a spacious entrance, a 7.5 tatami mat waiting room and a 12 tatami mat Japanese room, a wide veranda that doubles as a reception room with a 50-inch TV, and a cypress bath where you can enjoy the hot spring. Yuno Onsen is popular for its smooth hot springs. Some people have written that the air conditioning is loud, but Rankeitei has an elaborate design with latticed ceilings on both sides with air outlets, so it is quiet, and there is a dedicated air conditioning unit on the veranda, so you can stay comfortably. The large public bath, which is in a separate building, is quite large compared to the number of guest rooms, and you can see outside from the large windows, so even though there is no open-air bath, it is quite satisfying. The large bathtub is divided into three, and is equipped with a jacuzzi and a jet bath. There are also seven washing areas, so you can enjoy the hot springs at your leisure without feeling crowded. This time, I ordered a full course of puffer fish for dinner. Starting with an appetizer, we were served puffer fish sashimi, milt, chawanmushi, grilled puffer fish, fried puffer fish, puffer fish chiri, and finally rice porridge. All the dishes were plentiful and satisfying, and the course also included fin sake, which was a nice touch. For breakfast, we had a Japanese set meal at the restaurant next to the entrance. It was simple but quite delicious. With high-quality hot springs, delicious food, and friendly staff, this is a very popular inn.
