I stayed at Avanti House 1. Trying to travel on a budget, I found this to be a pretty good choice. It's an old house, probably constructed in the early 20th century, and is located directly across from the Studebaker national Museum. I would describe it as a sort of cross between B&B and hostel. Although breakfast is not provided, there are snacks and coffee in the communal kitchen, and equipment to do your own cooking if you choose to do that. It's reasonably quiet, clean, comfortable. My room had an en suite bath, which is tiny but serviceable. The other rooms use a common bathroom. There are several common rooms with widescreen TV available. The house is filled with interesting antique articles and memorabilia. I could walk to downtown South Bend restaurants and shops in 15 to 20 minutes. There is a laundromat and grocery store located approximately one block from the house. The nearest bus stop is three blocks away, and the bus runs to the South Bend transportation center for domestic and international flights, commuter train to Chicago, and long haul bus services. The house has its own off street parking for those food drive.
