Having stayed at this hotel before and having been very happy with it, we were somewhat disappointed this time. We stayed for 3 nights, and paid quite a bit more for the room than the previous stay. The room we were given was small, had no facilities whatsoever, no shelves, no drawers and limited hanging space. The bedside table one side was more like a small stool with no shelf, could have easily been knocked over if reaching for something from the bed. The bed was smaller than we had requested and considerably smaller than the one on our previous visit, causing lack of sleep as I need to stretch out due to my bad back. Maybe because we were in the Annex? There was no bath unlike the previous time. Traffic noise in room. No availability to change rooms. The heating/air con worked well, the shower was hot and had good pressure and the staff were friendly. The room was clean although the carpet was badly stained near the tea and coffee tray. The location of the hotel near the centre of Hanley is good, and there are a few restaurants beside the hotel as well as the one attached to the hotel, Brewers Fayre. Many shops and venues seem to have closed in Hanley since our last visit, but there are still some good restaurants and cafes, mainly due to the Theatre trade in the town. Car parking plentiful at the hotel. The downside for me is that to walk to Hanley centre, a few minutes away, you have to go past the former 5* Best Western Hotel & Spa which is now a migrant hotel. I felt somewhat intimidated as many were gathered outside smoking, some waiting for taxis, and staring at me as we walked past. I would not have felt safe on my own. I am not sure I would stay in this hotel or this area again.
