I took a chance staying three nights at this hotel fore the first time while attending a race meeting, paying a bit more than I usually do for hotel, around £150/night B&B. The hotel is in Fulford to the south of York, but it's on a main bus route or about 10-15 minutes driving into York. What you go get by paying a bit more is plenty of helpful staff, I don't recall any time I was left looking for a assistance. The staff serving in the evening are especially good and well managed. Evening meals were really good, I never felt the need to go elsewhere; you have the option of eating in the restaurant or the lounge bar. Breakfasts were pretty good with ample choice of cereals and you could order off menu. My only observation is that poached eggs were always served with rock solid yolks. I requested a quiet room as the hotel hosts wedding receptions and special events. I was allocated room 38 which was indeed very quiet. Room size was good, when ample space to walk around the bed and use the club armchair or sit and work at the desk. WiFi speed throughout the hotel is good. Décor in the room was classy, with off-white and dark tones on feature wall. The bathroom is where I feel an update is sorely needed, everything worked but it did look really tired with old fashioned tiles and silicone sealant peeling away from around the vinyl. If you're used to very modern bathrooms, this looked well out of date. I noted there was no shaver point in the bathroom, oddly it's above the desk, and no mixer-tap for the sink. Returning to the positive, all my requests were met without any quibbles and staff were chatty and pleasant to speak to. The hotel seems to cater for middle-aged guests on holiday and groups on managed excursions to York. I didn't see any business people or families with young children during my stay. That rather suites the genteel, relaxed feel of the hotel.
