Wat Umong, a unique temple in Chiang Mai

Wat Umong got its name from having tunnels (or “umong” in Thai) at the base of the main pagodas. It sets in a lush garden with own reservoir. It is believed to be built, deserted, and restored in several periods, so you can witness ruins (400-600 years old), pagodas, Buddhist artifacts, courtyard with an Ashoka Pillar replica, Buddhism teaching gallery and library. I think this combination makes Wat Umong unique and draws attention of visitors. Its accociation with revered Thai monks should also contribute to its good reputation. For me, the most important take was its history since 1947, which explains how a group of strong believers in Buddhism restored this temple to its current glory. It is located 3-4km from Suan Dok Gate (the western side of the Chiang Mai moat). My hostel “Insight Hostel” that I booked through trip.com is in a walking distance, so I walked there. This hostel is very suitable if you also intend to explore the area at the back of Chiang Mai University, where you can experience great student vibes especially at night. As it is an active temple, admission is free. Donation is encouraged to keep the decent state of maintenance. Minimum 1 hour is needed to make a quick tour of the whole compound. I suggest 2-3 hours if you want to appreciate it more, but the signposting in English is rare.
