The 'Devil's City' - Datong Earth Forest

The Datong Earth Forest is located in Shibangou, Duzhuang Village, Yunzhou District, Datong City, Shanxi Province, about 20 kilometers south of Datong City. An earth forest is a term for a geomorphological feature, which is a loose accumulation of sand and gravel in riverbeds. In a dry climate, it is formed by the erosion and scouring of seasonal rainwater. The Datong Earth Forest is known as the 'Devil's City'. Up close, the oddly shaped, variously sized, and unevenly distributed earth platforms, earth pillars, and earth cliffs give a sense of inexplicable oppression, as if one is standing beside giants.
