Walking through the thousands of vermilion torii gates, which create tunnels along the trails of Mount Inari, was an ethereal experience. The contrast between the vibrant gates and the serene, green backdrop of the forest was visually stunning. Each gate, donated by individuals or businesses hoping for prosperity, tells a story of faith and tradition spanning centuries. The ascent to the mountain's summit offers not just spiritual solace but also panoramic views of Kyoto. The hike can be strenuous, taking 2-3 hours to reach the top, but there are many smaller shrines and tea shops along the way where one can rest and reflect. Visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon is advisable to avoid the crowds and experience the tranquility of the shrine. The soft light at these times also provides a magical touch to the already enchanting scenery. One of the most memorable parts of my visit was the rows of small fox statues, regarded as Inari's messengers, each bearing a unique expression and character.
