Hokkaido Jingu (Japanese: ほっかいどうじんぐう) is a Shinto shrine located in the Chuo Ward of Sapporo, Hokkaido. During the early days of Hokkaido's development, the region was often compared with Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands, and other areas. The branch shrine within Hokkaido Jingu, known as the 'Kaitaku Shrine', enshrines a group of individuals who made significant contributions to the development of Hokkaido (such as Yoshitake Shima and Rinzo Mamiya). Hokkaido Jingu is a famous spot for cherry blossom viewing in Japan, and due to the climate, plum and cherry blossoms bloom at the same time, which is a rare and spectacular sight! There are about 1,400 cherry trees and 250 plum trees within the shrine, making it a very popular tourist spot in Hokkaido. The guardian deity that blesses the development of Hokkaido and the happiness of its people is still closely related to the lives of the residents. Traditional rituals are held during New Year visits, exorcisms, Setsubun, weddings, and other occasions. The shrine is surrounded by lush greenery, and you can even spot squirrels from time to time, making it a worthwhile place to check in.
