The largest lake in the Caucasus and one of the oldest on the planet Sevan holds secrets that date back millions of years. 📍Where is it: Armenia, on the Armenian Highlands, at an altitude of about 1,900 metres above sea level. It's the largest lake in the Caucasus (area ~1,240 km², depth up to 83 metres). 🕯How old is the lake? The numbers are staggering. The first lava dam that turned the valley into a lake formed approximately 5 million years ago, during the Middle Pliocene, when volcanic activity blocked the valley of the ancient Paleo-Hrazdan River. Later, around 4,400 years ago, a powerful earthquake altered the lake's level and even affected the lives of people in the region. Some scientists consider Sevan a relict of an ancient sea that once existed on the Armenian Highlands. Sources note: "Lakes Sevan and Van are of dammed origin and formed simultaneously, roughly at the boundary of the Pliocene and Post-Pliocene," with andesite lavas creating the dam averaging 5 million years in age. Further evidence of the lake's antiquity comes from archaeological finds ceramics and animal bones dating back 6,270 years, and marine fauna remains in even older sediment layers. 💎What makes Sevan unique? · Microbialites — fossilised structures created by ancient microorganisms called cyanobacteria. They formed on the lake bed and can now be found both underwater and on land where the water has receded. · Endemic trout "ishkhan" — the "princely fish" found only here. Its population is now being restored. · A changing fate: During the Soviet era, the lake's water level dropped by 18 metres due to hydroelectric projects on the Hrazdan River. The island of Sevan, where the ancient monastery stood, became a peninsula. Today, the lake is being restored via a 49-km tunnel from the Arpa River. ⭐️When to visit and what to do: · Best time: July–September, when the water warms to 18–24°C. In harsh winters, Sevan freezes over. · What to see: the Sevan peninsula with its 9th-century monastery, beaches, and boat trips. · Sevan National Park — a protected area with unique wildlife and landscapes. 📌Practical tips: · The nearest town is Sevan, about an hour's drive from Yerevan. · Swimming is possible, though deeper water stays cool even in summer. #naturalwonders #ancientwonders

Armenia 🇦🇲 Armenia is perfect for those who love history, ancient monasteries, mountains, lakes, and Caucasian cuisine. It's not a very large country; a 7-day trip is ideal for your first time, using Yerevan as a base for a road trip around the country. Official travel websites offer similar 7-day itineraries, including Garni–Geghard, Lake Sevan–Dilijan, and Khor Virap–Noravank. 📅 7-Day Itinerary:

Day 1 — Yerevan 🇦🇲
Rest after your flight. Walk around Republic Square → Northern Avenue → Cascade Complex, then have dinner in the city. No need to travel outside the city on the first day.

Day 2 — Yerevan (Full Day)
Visit Matenadaran → Mother Armenia → Vernissage Market → Armenian Genocide Memorial. In the evening, return to Republic Square.

Day 3 — Garni + Geghard ⛰️
Leave Yerevan for Garni Temple → Symphony of Stones → Geghard Monastery, then return to the city. This route is perfect for a day trip because the places are on the same side. Geghard is a monastery carved into a cliff face and is one of the country's landmarks.

Day 4 — Lake Sevan → Dilijan 💙
Go north to Sevanavank + Lake Sevan, then on to Dilijan. It's better to stay in Dilijan for one night than to drive back to Yerevan immediately. Lake Sevan is about an hour from Yerevan, and Dilijan is ideal for staying amidst the forest and mountains.

Day 5 — Dilijan → Yerevan 🌲
In the morning, visit Old Dilijan or Haghartsin Monastery before returning to Yerevan in the afternoon. This day is a light one, no need to continue the road trip south immediately.

Day 6 — Khor Virap → Areni → Noravank 🍷
One of the most beautiful days of the trip. Start at Khor Virap. If the weather is clear, you can see Mount Ararat. Then go to the village of Areni and then to Noravank Monastery in the middle of a red rock valley. Khor Virap is about 40 minutes from Yerevan, and Noravank is about 1.5 hours, and both are on the same route.

Day 7 — Yerevan + Return Trip ✈️
Shop for souvenirs, visit cafes, and revisit places we missed on the first day before heading to the airport.

🏨 Recommended Accommodation

If you want to stay near Republic Square for easy walking around, choose Armenia Marriott Hotel Yerevan.

If you prefer a classic hotel in the city center and a more affordable option than luxury hotels, choose Grand Hotel Yerevan, an SLH Hotel.

For Dilijan, I recommend a guesthouse or boutique hotel in the city center for one night. Avoid resorts far away, as you'll be driving back to Yerevan the next morning.

🍴 Restaurants + Food

For easy-to-eat Armenian food with many local dishes, try Lavash Restaurant.

Another great option for trying various Armenian dishes in one meal is Tavern Yerevan.

Must-try dishes include Khorovats (grilled meat), Dolma, Harissa, Gata, Lavash, and Spas (yogurt soup). If you go to Areni, also try the local wine.

☀️ Best Time to Visit

If traveling this route, I recommend May–June or September–October. Because city walking and road trips are more comfortable during the hot season, Armenia Travel suggests that April to August is ideal for outdoor activities, while autumn is perfect for changing scenery and cooler weather.

🛂 Visa for Thai Passport

Regular Thai passports are not on Armenia's general visa-free list. Therefore, it is generally advisable to check and apply for an e-Visa through the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs before traveling. The official system offers a Visitor e-Visa valid for a maximum stay of 21 days (US$8 fee) or up to 120 days (US$38), with a maximum processing time of approximately 3 business days.

However, from July 1, 2026 to July 1, 2027, Armenia has a temporary visa waiver program for people from certain countries holding eligible Residence Permits from the US, EU/Schengen, or some Gulf Arab countries. Therefore, if you already have a foreign Residence Permit, you may need to apply for one. You should check the MFA system before applying for a visa.

📌 Tip

Don't try to add Tatev to this 7-day plan. It's far to the south. If you plan to visit Tatev and Goris, add another 2 days for a more relaxed trip.

For the Garni–Geghard and Khor Virap–Noravank road trips, renting a car with a driver is very convenient. For Yerevan, a car isn't necessary.

Regarding safety, avoid areas within approximately 5 km of the Armenia–Azerbaijan border and the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan, which the FCDO still recommends avoiding by the end of August 2026. The main tourist routes in this plan don't require entering those areas.

✨ Summary

7 days is ideal:

Yerevan 2 days → Garni/Geghard → Sevan/Dilijan 2 days → Khor Virap/Areni/Noravank → Yerevan

Armenia is less tiring to travel than Mongolia or Tajikistan. But it offers a wide variety of views, including mountain monasteries, lakes, the capital city, cafes, and wine. It's a perfect aftermath of Georgia. 🇦🇲
