You will truly fall in love with this water town For those interested in Jiangnan water towns, I really don’t recommend rushing through like a special forces mission. Arrive at the hotel on the first morning, then spend the afternoon and noon exploring East Gate. One street basically has all the attractions, and across the river is another street with vendors. A round trip covers East Gate, and there aren’t many people, so you can really savor the unique feeling each spot offers. East Gate has many "intangible cultural heritage" performances, such as shadow puppetry. The former residence of Mu Xin is also highly recommended for a slow visit. Spend the entire second day exploring West Gate. Although it’s the off-season, West Gate is still much busier than East Gate. Be sure to try the preserved vegetable biscuit and shredded radish pancake while they’re hot. The night view of West Gate is beautiful, and you must take a boat ride at night (recommended 240 RMB for a private boat). I think sharing a boat is cramped and you won’t get good photos. On the third day, explore South Gate, which is basically one street. There are many vendors inside, but also many old houses that charge a 1 RMB entrance fee and are worth seeing. Shopping in South Gate is definitely cheaper than in West or East Gate, but you must bargain and compare prices at three different shops. I bought two qipaos at a shop right at the entrance, one for 399 RMB and one for 499 RMB. Later, I saw the exact same styles for just a couple hundred RMB elsewhere, which felt like a huge loss. South Gate also has many photo spots, so it’s definitely worth a visit."
