Located in the heart of Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital, adjacent to the Brunei River and an artificial lagoon, the mosque covers approximately 2 hectares. Designed by an Italian architect, it blends Renaissance and Islamic styles. The main dome is covered with 2.3 million pieces of 24K pure gold mosaic, gleaming brilliantly; the four 60-meter-high marble minarets contrast beautifully with the pure white exterior. A replica of a 16th-century royal barge (Mahligai) is moored in the artificial lagoon in front of the mosque, symbolizing the connection between the Sultan and Islamic history. At night, the lights reflected on the water create a fairytale palace effect.
