Before coming to Turpan, I had no idea this place existed. I only knew about the Flaming Mountains and the Grape Valley. But after arriving in Turpan, I saw Jiaohe Night being recommended everywhere while looking up travel guides. Seeing all the rave reviews online, I decided to check it out. To see the Jiaohe Night performance, you can only enter the scenic area after 8:30 pm. Seats are first come, first served. Since the performance doesn't start until 10 pm, you can explore the Jiaohe Ancient City before then. Coming at this time, the advantages of visiting at night are obvious. Although the lighting is a bit dim, the ruins of Jiaohe Ancient City have a unique charm under the setting sun. The temperature is also more comfortable at this time. As the hottest place in China, it's not very realistic to stay outdoors in Turpan for a long time during the day without any shade. The Jiaohe Night performance mainly features music played with Xinjiang instruments. Although I'm not very familiar with music, I could still feel the past prosperity and current desolation of this place during the performance. There are two ancient city ruins in Turpan but Jiaohe City Ruins is actually the best preserved ancient city ruins in the world. This city is one of the key passageways of the silk road. One more interesting fact of this ancient city is that it lies on a 30 meter high plateau and apparently used to be a capital city of ancient Jushe State. Before you are driven to the ruins, the shuttle bus will stop you at a museum which shows you how the ancient city ruins used to look like. You will have a glimpse of their household even their backyards and livelihood. Just very interesting to see. Tips: 1. apply sun cream because there’s no shade here and you will be completely burned if you don’t cover up. 2. Bring water as it is really dry here and super hot. Ticket price: around 150 if i recall correctly. This is including the museum and the shuttle bus and the entry to the ancient city ruins. Length of visit: 2 hours
