Huangguoshu Scenic Area

9
4.6/5
40.2k reviews
The Huangguoshu Scenic Area is located in Anshun, Guizhou, centered around the Huangguoshu Waterfall. Surrounded by deep gorges, dense vegetation, and dotted with limestone caves and stone forests, it is a typical karst landscape area. The waterfall's name originates from the locally abundant "Huangguoshu" (Ficus virens). Ming Dynasty traveler Xu Xiake visited and documented this site, contributing to its fame. The scenic area primarily consists of three main sections: the Great Waterfall, Tianxing Bridge, and Doupotang. Most travelers follow the sequence of Doupotang, Tianxing Bridge, and finally the Great Waterfall, saving the most spectacular view for last. The grand waterfall has a drop of nearly 80 m and a width of over 100 m. The Baishui River plunges from the cliff top into Rhinoceros Pool, creating a vast mist. Multiple viewing platforms around it allow visitors to experience its grandeur, wonder, steepness, and beauty from different angles—above, below, front, back, left, and right. A particularly unique experience lies behind the waterfall: a 100 m long Water Curtain Cave runs horizontally through its midsection, featuring cave windows and halls. Reaching through a window, one can touch the cascading water. The cave served as the filming location for the Water Curtain Cave in the 1986 TV series Journey to the West. Due to the heavy humidity inside, bringing a raincoat in advance is recommended. Tianxing Bridge is renowned for its harmonious blend of rocks, water, trees, and caves—where rocks rise from the water, caves hide within rocks, and trees stand beside caves. The stepping stones along the path are engraved with dates, allowing travelers to find their own "birthday stone." The attraction is divided into upper and lower sections. Many travelers turn back after completing the upper section, missing the Silver Chain Waterfall in the lower part—where water cascades like silver chains into a funnel-shaped pool, the highlight of Tianxing Bridge. The Doupotang waterfall is located approx. 1 km upstream from the grand waterfall. With a width of over 100 m at its crest, the water spreads out smoothly like a beaded curtain. During the high-water season, its deep roar earns it the nickname "roaring waterfall." The scene of the four pilgrims leading their horse across the river in the 1986 TV series Journey to the West was filmed here. In summer and fall, the waterfalls are full and powerful, while in winter and spring, the flow becomes gentler, offering different viewing experiences. Nearby, visitors can also enjoy local snacks like sticky rice, love tofu, and Anshun spring rolls.Zhenning · 12.6km from downtown

Loong Palace attraction is located in the southern suburbs of Anshun, adjacent to Huangguoshu scenic area. It consists of three parts: the western Loong Palace central area featuring the essence of karst caves, the eastern Loong Palace scenic area - Xuantang showcasing pastoral scenery, and Qunfang valley - a small hilly area between them. There are various ways to explore Loong Palace: you can visit just the central area and return, take a boat tour followed by hiking through Qunfang valley before continuing by boat to Loong Palace scenic area - Xuantang, or explore in reverse order. During peak season like golden week when crowds are large, the reverse route is recommended to avoid long queues of group visitors. The central attraction of Loong Palace consists of two karst cave groups, with several cave halls connected by an underground river, collectively known as the first section.Loong PalaceHe'erjinLoong PalaceYou can only enter by boat, and it usually takes about half an hour to visit. Once inside,Loong PalaceStretching over 800 m, this section represents the essence of Loong Palace, featuring massive stalactites of diverse shapes that spark the imagination. The dim lighting inside may make photography challenging, so please take note. Qunfang valley is a hilly area where you can climb up and down amidst lush greenery while breathing fresh air - an exhilarating experience. Along the way, you'll encounter several karst caves including Yulong cave, Loong Palace scenic area - Guanyin cave, and Dizang hall. However, at Loong Palace scenic area - Guanyin cave, please note: if you're not a devout Buddhist, it's advisable not to touch anything or accept so-called "free incense" to avoid unexpected expenses.Anshun · 17.4km from downtown

The Cherry Blossom Garden in Pingba Farm is located by the shores of Hongfeng Lake and serves as a flower and seedling cultivation base in Guizhou Province. Nearly 700,000 cherry trees are planted in contiguous groves within the garden, mainly consisting of white early-blooming cherry and pink late-blooming cherry. The early cherry blossoms first, followed by the late cherry, with continuous blooming from mid-March to mid-April each year. As the flowering periods alternate, a gradient sea of color from white to pink is formed. The park features three core view areas: Cherry Blossom Plaza, Cherry Blossom Discovery Garden, and Cherry Blossom Stroll Garden. Cherry Blossom Plaza is where contiguous early cherry trees are concentrated; at peak bloom, the trees are covered in white blossoms like snow blanketing the ground. Cherry Blossom Stroll Garden has a high planting density, and when the white early cherry and pink late cherry bloom in alternation, the layers resemble clouds. Cherry Blossom Discovery Garden is ideal for wandering through, offering an immersive experience of a sea of flowers overhead and fallen petals underfoot. The park also contains nursery areas with hundreds of cherry varieties and stretches of ecological tea gardens, where tea bushes and cherry trees grow intermingled, forming the unique view of "tea and cherry growing together." Climb to the observation deck at the highest point of the park and look out into the distance: up close are the rolling sea of cherry blossoms and the shimmering waves of Hongfeng Lake, while far away are the ink-wash landscapes outlined by karst mountains. Every spring, tens of thousands of acres of cherry blossoms stretch along the lakeshore, with the lake, tea gardens, and sea of flowers complementing one another—making this one of Guizhou's signature spring flower-viewing destinations.Anshun · 45.7km from downtown

Guizhou Jiuxian Tourist Scenic Spot is located in Guanling, Guizhou. It is divided into two functional areas: cave sightseeing and water-friendly entertainment. The cave scenic Attraction is Jiuxian Cave Heaven, which is a typical underground karst erosion style. It consists of 1 world-famous view, 7 major scenic spots, and 36 characteristic landscapes. Jiuxian Cave Heaven, a karst Attraction, is a typical underground karst erosion style. Jiuxian Cave Heaven was in a stable terrestrial coastal environment in the Sinian Period, 700 million years ago. From the Cambrian Period 500 million years ago to the Triassic Period 200 million years ago, it repeatedly experienced four sea immersions and retreats. In the Jurassic Period, 190 million years ago, the crust in this area rose and became a continental folding belt, laying the foundation for its geological structure. Since then, these carbonate-based geological structures have formed many magical karsts, rift valleys, and funnels under the long-term dissolution of surface and groundwater. The stalactites, stalagmites, and stone forests in the cave are peculiar in shape. Jiuxian Cave Heaven is a young cave. In the water entertainment area, there is the Jiuxian Cave Rafting, which has the largest drop, sharp turns, and amazing scenery in the country, as well as the Jiuxian Water World (a cave tsunami with an area of 8,000 square meters), Jiutian Yaochi, and a parent-child paradise.Guanling · 9.1km from downtown

Anshun Ancient City Historical and Cultural District

Anshun Ancient City Historical and Cultural District is located in the heart of the old town of Anshun. The ancient city was first built in the 14th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1381). It was initially a military garrison. Later, thanks to its location as the "belly of Guizhou and throat of Yunnan," it gradually became an important commercial hub on the Yunnan-Guizhou trade route. Over the past 600+ years, the layout of the old streets and many old buildings have been preserved. Within the district, grey-tiled wooden houses and slate-paved alleys interweave, with Central Guizhou-style old residences, temples, and traditional storefronts mixed together. The highlights of the district are quite concentrated: Rulin Road is a well-preserved old street, with an approx. 600m long slate road lined with old wooden houses, now home to many artistic shops;Confucian Temple, Wumiao Temple, and the Former Residence of Wang Ruofei are old buildings scattered throughout the area, which can be visited along the way; the Guancheng River flows through the old town. After nightfall, lanterns along the river light up, and their reflections on the water are a scene many tourists come specifically to photograph. The Paotai Street area gathers authentic Anshun flavors such as Guojuan, small pot jelly, grilled small intestines, and Jianfen, while the district also features shops selling handicrafts and intangible cultural heritage handmade goods.Anshun · 1.4km from downtown

Walking slowly along the path, a cool mist washes over you, and the holographic projections and the waterfall's flow intertwine, like a flowing galaxy. Reaching the central viewing platform, the 77.8-meter-high waterfall transforms into a giant natural screen. Lasers pierce the night sky, and rainbows and Buyi ethnic totems appear and disappear in the mist. The roar of the waterfall and the sound of drums resonate together; at that moment, you truly forget to take out your phone and just want to stand and watch the whole thing.

It's worth a visit, though quite tiring; we probably took the easiest route. From the visitor center, take the sightseeing bus to the scenic area entrance, then walk one kilometer along the river to Longmen Waterfall. Take the elevator up, then walk 800 meters to Tianchi for the boat tour. Take the boat into the Dragon Palace twice, but don't get off at the second entrance (from there you have to walk an hour and a half to Xuantang). Return by boat to Tianchi, then walk to the scenic area exit, then another kilometer through Buyi Town to the sightseeing bus station. Take the sightseeing bus back to the visitor center. The whole trip takes about three and a half hours.

The backbone of China in the clouds. It's recommended to visit the museum first to learn about the history and construction techniques of Guizhou's bridges before climbing the bridge. From the museum, descend the steps to the visitor center, then take the six-story sightseeing elevator directly to the bridge's interior. Stepping out of the elevator, you'll find yourself on a 370-meter-high observation walkway, where you can experience the vibrations of the bridge as cars pass by.

Getu River A world-class karst cave wonderland, featuring giant tunnels, underground rivers, divine light displays, and the Miao ethnic group's intangible cultural heritage of spider-like rock climbing… Unfortunately, the weather wasn't good today, so we couldn't see the divine light. The shuttle bus costs 10 yuan; the journey is actually short, only a few minutes, and the service is excellent.

The Gui'an Cherry Blossom Garden lives up to its reputation as "the most beautiful cherry blossom garden on the blue planet." 700,000 cherry trees are in full bloom across 24,000 mu (approximately 1,000 acres) of land. The vibrant sea of pink and white blossoms, set against the backdrop of emerald green tea fields and sparkling lakes, creates a breathtaking spring scene. Strolling through it feels like stepping into a dreamlike fairytale.

The Water Curtain Cave is located at a height of 40 to 47 meters above the Huangguoshu Waterfall. It is 134 meters long and consists of 6 cave windows, 5 cave halls, 3 cave springs and 6 passages. This is the real scene where the 1986 version of "Journey to the West" filmed the scene of Sun Wukong flying into the Water Curtain Cave. The stalactites in the cave are of different shapes. You can also look out through the waterfall curtain from different positions and enjoy the double-track dynamic rainbow on the Rhinoceros Pond, which is very wonderful. Photography suggestions At the viewing platform outside the Water Curtain Cave, you can take a panoramic view of the waterfall. With the waterfall as the background, the characters stand sideways or with their backs to the body, which can capture the artistic conception. Enter the Water Curtain Cave, stand in front of the cave window, let the sunlight pass through the water curtain to form a halo, and take close-ups of the characters. On the iron chain bridge, with the waterfall and green mountains as the background, take pictures of the characters walking across the bridge to add dynamics.

Pingba Farm As a large-scale flower and seedling cultivation base in Guizhou, Pingba Farm has more than cherry blossoms - more than ten kinds of green plants such as osmanthus and red maple are flourishing. The farm also has tea gardens, lakes, and a sea of magnolias. There are views in all four seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, green plants in summer and autumn, and quiet countryside in winter. It is the "mother" of the Gui'an Cherry Blossom Garden, carrying the dual functions of "cultivation + sightseeing", suitable for slow travel to experience the ecological wildness.

Looking at the Huajiang Canyon Bridge from a different angle, you can also see the old Huajiang Bridge and the Huajiang Iron Chain Bridge. For someone like me who loves hiking but dislikes boating, it felt a bit monotonous. In the end, I abandoned the boat and hiked.
