The Palace of the Blackheads is a building in the old town of Riga (Vecrīga), the capital of Latvia. The original building was built in the early 14th century and belonged to the Brotherhood of Blackheads, a guild of unmarried German merchants in Riga. From 1580 to 1886, many decorations were added successively.Riga · 291m from downtown

Vecrīga

Although the total area of Vecrīga is not very large, it boasts over 800 years of history. Located in the Riga region of Latvia, Europe, it serves as both the geographical center of Riga and its historical and cultural center. Walking through it, you will find that the architectural styles and street layouts are much like those in Western European countries. From the Hanseatic League era, many historical landmarks remain here, such as the House of the Blackheads, along with many other historical traces. Although the name contains "Old Town," the "old" here refers to its long history, and the buildings themselves are far from "old." Each building holds its own against modern architecture, often possessing even more charm. Amber jewelry here is beautiful and quite famous. While the population is small, every Latvian is friendly and welcoming, always ready to answer travelers' questions, which is why this place is so popular with visitors.Riga · 45m from downtown

The Freedom Monument

15 reviews
Unveiled in 1935, this monument is an important symbol of Latvia's freedom, independence, and sovereignty, built to commemorate the soldiers who died during the Latvian War of Independence (1918–1920). At the top of the monument, a young woman holds three stars, facing west, representing the three regions of Latvia: Kurzeme, Vidzeme, and Latgale. The inscription reads "For Fatherland and Freedom." The Freedom Monument is 42 meters high, and the carvings on it represent the history and culture of Latvia. Riga usually holds public gatherings and official ceremonies here. The changing of the guard ceremony in front of the monument is quite interesting, and you can watch it if you have time, but in winter or when the weather is bad, the soldiers only guard the monument in the morning.Riga · 533m from downtown

The Blackhead Palace is located on Riga's City Hall Square. Its red brick exterior features gables and spires, and the portico is adorned with elaborate reliefs and an astronomical clock. The interior now serves as a museum; the second-floor lobby boasts stained glass and murals, the colors softened by the light filtering through the glass. The basement wine cellar retains its vaulted structure, and the air is filled with the scents of stone and old wood. Several manicured trees stand in the square, and a nearby fountain operates in the summer. The building was destroyed during World War II and has been rebuilt, but the red brick hue harmonizes well with the surrounding older buildings.

In winter, you can go to the mountains to see the icicles. The trails are well-maintained and have anti-slip mats, so you don't have to worry about slipping. The trees are covered with glistening icicles, which shimmer with a bluish light when the sunlight shines through, making them look like the trees are blooming with crystal flowers. It's especially beautiful. Villagers sell hot tea eggs by the roadside for three yuan each. They're warm to hold in your hand. You can stroll around at your own pace and take pictures without feeling crowded at all. It's much more impressive than the pictures you see online. After walking around, you feel refreshed and relaxed. It's much more comfortable than staying at home.
