Napoleon was exiled to the island of Elba, where he lived at that time was called "Iron Port Town". After the anti-French coalition entered Paris in March 1814, Napoleon was forced to abdicate and was escorted to the town of "Iron Port" on a British ship at 6:30 pm on May 3, 1814. Accompanying him were his mother, his sister Paulina and some entourage. When he docked on the ship, all local officials on the island of Elba went to greet him and handed him the key to the town to show their sincerity of welcome. The local people also expressed a warm welcome to Napoleon's arrival. Napoleon's arrival made the previously unknown island of Elba the center of attention of all of Europe.
Napoleon chose the "Mill" villa located at the highest point of the Iron Port Town as the residence for himself and his family. The villa was built in 1724 by Medici, the local ruler of Florence. Napoleon invited carpenters, masons, painters and decorators from France to renovate it into a veritable villa "palace", which was comfortable and safe to live in. He arranged his living room, library, bedroom, etc. on the first floor and let his sister and mother live upstairs.
