Citadel of Erbil, with a history dating back to the 5th millennium BC or perhaps earlier, was first mentioned in historical records during the Ur III period, played a significant role during the Neo-Assyrian period, and was designated a World Heritage Site in 2014. Citadel of Erbil is oval-shaped, with a height between 25m–32m, and covers an area of 102,000 square meters. In the early 20th century, it housed 3 temples, 2 schools, and 1 bathhouse. This citadel is an excellent monument and historical site in northern Iraq, with a height that gradually increases, rising above the level of the surrounding plains. The currently inhabited area of the citadel was built by the Babylonians and Assyrians.Erbil · 10.8km from downtown

Currently being renovated/restored, so a lot of it is inaccessible. But it makes a dramatic sight in the downtown part of Erbil. Very friendly and welcoming local tourists hang out here too, so be prepared to pose for a lot of photos.
