Praia de Faro is located on the sandy coast of the Ancão Peninsula. It stretches for approx. 5 km and is characterized by its fine, soft golden sand, expansive Atlantic Ocean views, and natural sand dunes. One side faces the Atlantic Ocean, while the other connects to wetland waterways, creating a landscape where the ocean, sandbars, and intertidal zones intertwine. Along the coast, there are beach leisure areas, restaurants, bars, accommodations, and water sports service points. Visitors can sunbathe, walk, and swim, or experience activities such as surfing, sailing, and windsurfing. It is suitable for both enjoying seaside leisure and observing the sand dunes, wetlands, and birdlife within the natural park.Montenegro · 13.7km from Olhao

Barreta Island

Barreta Island is located in southern Portugal and is an unspoiled nature reserve. This small island is famous for its pristine beaches and rich biodiversity, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. The island is home to a variety of bird species, including some endangered ones, offering excellent birdwatching opportunities. Travelers usually take a ferry from Faro to reach the island, enjoying a short and scenic ride. There are no commercial facilities on the island, so it is recommended to bring your own water and food to enjoy a picnic for the day. Hiking is a great way to explore the island, and the trails offer stunning sea views and unique vegetation. Since there is no shade on the island, visitors are advised to take sun protection measures and wear comfortable walking shoes. The tranquil atmosphere of the island makes it an ideal place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. When visiting, please be mindful of protecting the environment and follow the Leave No Trace principle to maintain the island's natural state.Faro · 9.6km from Olhao
Faro Cathedral
No. 3 of Best Things to Do in Faro

Faro Cathedral

4.8/5
13 reviews
Faro Cathedral is a religious jewel of the Algarve region. It was built in the 13th century after the end of Moorish rule. After several earthquakes and reconstructions, the church incorporates a variety of architectural styles. The Gothic vaults contrast sharply with the Baroque gilded altar, showing a rich historical layer and artistic diversity. The Renaissance-style bell tower on the west side is another highlight. Visitors can climb to the top to overlook the magnificent panoramic view of the Rua River Wetlands and the white old town. The interior of the church houses a 16th-century gilded wooden altar, an 18th-century organ, and a tile painting "St. James Slaughters the Moors", which are all art treasures that cannot be missed. The church museum displays 15th-century manuscripts and bishop vestments. You need to buy a joint ticket with the main cathedral to visit. Please note that the steps of the bell tower are steep and there is no elevator. It is not recommended to carry large luggage to the top to avoid affecting the visiting experience.Faro · 8.3km from Olhao

In the center of Faro, the capital of Portugal's Algarve region, stands an iconic historical building - the Town Arch. The Town Arch was built in the mid-18th century as a gate to the ancient city wall of Faro. It has been well preserved to this day. The arch is designed in a typical neoclassical style with a solemn and elegant shape. The top of the arch is decorated with the shield symbolizing Portugal and the royal coat of arms of King Jose I of Portugal, showing its former majesty and glory. On the walls on both sides of the arch, the exquisite reliefs are lifelike, depicting mythological stories and historical scenes, and every detail embodies the exquisite craftsmanship of the craftsmen. For centuries, Arco da Vila has witnessed the historical changes of Faro. It is not only an important barrier against foreign enemies, but also an important landmark of urban development. When night falls, soft lights illuminate the arch, giving it a dreamy veil that blends with the surrounding modern life to form a unique urban picture.Faro · 8.3km from Olhao

Located in the old town of Faro, the Carmo Church of Faro is a typical medieval Gothic church that reflects the style characteristics of Nordic architecture at that time. Its exterior adopts the typical Portuguese Baroque style, with a beige limestone facade and exquisite stone carvings, and the religious reliefs on the central gable are particularly eye-catching. The church is most eye-catching for its magnificent main altar, which is covered with gorgeous gilded wood carvings. The side chapels in the church are dedicated to different saints, and many precious historical relics are preserved inside, including exquisite wooden altars and historic baptismal fonts. The stained glass windows of the church depict stories from the Bible, adding a sacred and peaceful atmosphere to the church. Every year, the church holds various religious ceremonies. Today, Carmo Church is not only an important religious site, but also a symbol of Portuguese history and culture.Faro · 8.2km from Olhao

What travellers say about Olhao

As a seaside resort, the scenery is beyond doubt. Because it was winter when I went there, relatively speaking, there were not many people. But the warm sunshine, the sea breeze, and the view of the distance, this leisurely feeling is still very pleasant.

Faro Cathedral is also a well-known church here. Most Portuguese people here believe in Catholicism. There were so many churches I saw along the way that I didn’t want to visit them one by one, so I just took a photo and said I was done.
