España Square

4.8/5
533 reviews
España Square in Seville is located in the tranquil and refreshing Parque de Maria Luisa in the southern part of the city. Its crescent-shaped classical architecture stands elegantly amidst lush greenery, making it a popular leisure spot among Seville's residents. It was built as the core architectural complex for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, designed by Seville architect Aníbal González. Parque de Maria Luisa welcomed this newly constructed España Square, a crescent-shaped complex consisting of mansions, arch bridges, fountains, and pools. The signature feature of the square is the grid of colorful ceramic niches on the lower level of the arcade: over forty niches each represent a Spanish province, displaying painted tiles depicting the province's map, historical scenes, and portraits of famous figures. Many travelers make a point to find their favorite niche for a seated photo, while the arcade columns are adorned with round plaques of notable figures and coats of arms. Visitors can relax and take photos here or rent a small wooden boat to paddle on the lake, with particularly beautiful scenery at sunset. If you take a sightseeing carriage in the city, España Square is a must-visit spot. Amid the galloping wheels, you can fully enjoy the captivating scenes of the square, whether in motion or at rest.Seville · 1.3km from downtown

Parque de Maria Luisa is a major public green space in Seville, extending along theRio Guadalquivirand covering an area of approx. 400,000 square meters. The park was formerly the garden of the Palacio de San Telmo and was donated to the city of Seville by Infanta Maria Luisa Fernanda in 1893. Starting in 1911, French landscape designer Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier redesigned the garden, using Moorish-style landscaping as a foundation, adding fountains, ponds, glazed tile benches, and pavilions, and planting numerous palm trees, orange trees, and Mediterranean pines to create the overall setting for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. The semi-circular España Square on the east side of the park is the centerpiece of the exposition, designed by architect Aníbal González, and blends Renaissance, Baroque, and Neo-Mudéjar styles. The square is surrounded by a canal where visitors can rent boats to row on the water. Along the canal, the buildings feature benches made of glazed ceramic tiles, with each set representing a historical scene from a province in Spain. The three pavilions at the southern end of the park were also built for the exposition, each adopting one of three architectural styles: Gothic, Mudéjar, or Renaissance. Today, two of them have become museums: theArchaeological Museumdisplays prehistoric and Roman-era artifacts, including mosaics and sculptures unearthed from the nearby ancient ruins of Italica; while the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions exhibits local ceramics, traditional costumes, and handicraft tools. The park is also dotted with landmarks such as the Bécquer Monument, the Lion Fountain, and the Water Lily Pond.Seville · 1.6km from downtown

Torre del Oro

Torre del Oro is a dodecagonal military watchtower on the east bank of the Rio Guadalquivir. Built by the Moorish Almohad dynasty, it was once connected to the royal palace by a section of the city wall, guarding the strategic waterway for ships traveling upriver into Seville. The origin of the tower's name is debated: some say it was once covered in shimmering tiles, others claim it was named for the golden reflection of its mortar-and-straw coating in the sunlight, and legend also has it that King Peter I stored gold and silver treasures inside. While the golden finish is hard to find today, the tower often glows with a warm golden hue in the sunset, making it particularly photogenic. The tower is divided into three sections: the base was built in the early 13th century, the second level was an expansion in the 14th century, and the circular dome at the top was added after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake and is still covered with golden tiles. Historically, it has been used as a prison and a chapel, and in the 19th century, it served as offices for shipping companies and port authorities. Since 1944, the tower has housed a maritime museum, displaying ancient nautical charts, ship models, and historical navigational instruments, as well as documents recording voyages such as those of Magellan and Elcano, telling the story of Seville's connection to this great river and the sea. There is a cruise pier on the riverbank below the tower, where you can get a different perspective of this old tower from the water.Seville · 1.4km from downtown

Triana is a neighborhood in Seville, Spain, across the Guadalquivir River from the city center. Residents of Triana think the neighborhood is completely different from the rest of Seville. In fact, the Triana is an integral part of Seville's culture and traditions. There are several pottery shops here that are quite distinctive, where you can buy high-quality pottery, and some old churches to visit. At the same time, Triana is also the place where flamenco music was invented. There are many flamenco stars of gypsy blood. My recent visit to Plaza España in Sevilla was an unforgettable experience, highlighting the architectural magnificence and cultural richness of this iconic Spanish landmark. Designed by Aníbal González for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, the plaza is a stunning example of Renaissance Revival architecture, with a unique blend of Moorish elements that pay homage to Spain's rich history. As I walked along the semi-circular brick building, I was captivated by the intricate ceramic tiles, known as azulejos, depicting the history and culture of each Spanish province. The craftsmanship and attention to detail in these artworks were astounding, offering a colorful mosaic of Spain's diverse regions. The bridges crossing the small canal, which reflects the beautiful façade, added to the romantic atmosphere of the plaza. The expansive central square, with its large fountain, was a vibrant gathering place for locals and tourists alike, echoing with the sounds of flamenco music and the sight of traditional dance performances. The grandeur of the Plaza España, set against the backdrop of Seville's clear blue skies, provided a picturesque setting that was both awe-inspiring and inviting.Exploring the Plaza España was not only a visual feast but also a deep dive into the cultural heart of Seville. It stood as a testament to the city's historical significance and its ongoing celebration of Andalusian culture and traditions. This visit left me with a profound appreciation for Spain's architectural beauty and its rich tapestry of history and art. visit it!

A group tour to Spain. Exterior view of the Torre del Oro in Seville. The Torre del Oro is a dodecagonal military watchtower built in the 13th century by the Almohad dynasty. It was primarily constructed to control ships traveling from the Guadalquivir River to Seville and to provide security for the precious metals regularly brought back from the Americas by the Spanish treasure fleet. A large iron chain stretched underwater from the tower, which could block the river and prevent ships from entering. Today, the restored tower serves as a naval museum, containing prints, letters, models, and historical archives. The museum also explains the naval history of Seville and the importance of the Guadalquivir River.

It connects the old city center of Seville (historical, cultural, conservation areas, etc.) with the residential area, and I found out that it is the first fixed bridge in Seville. The view of the river on the left and right sides of the bridge is also quite something to see ^^
