Zhong Guo Tian Yan Jing Qu

8.1
4.5/5
6.8k reviews

Zhong Guo Tian Yan Jing Qu is nestled among the karst mountains of Pingtang, Guizhou. Built around the 500 m aperture spherical radio telescope FAST, it consists of two parts: the observation deck area in the mountains and the Pingtang Astronomy Town in Kedu Town. This telescope, known as the "China Sky Eye," rests in a natural funnel-shaped depression. More than 4,000 reflector units form a spherical-cap "wok," with a receiving area equivalent to nearly 30 football fields, and its aperture ranks among the world's largest among completed radio telescopes of its kind. From the proposal of the concept in the 1990s to its completion and commissioning in 2016, the project took more than 20 years, with site selection alone lasting over a decade. Astronomer Nan Rendong, who initiated and led the project, is therefore called the "father of China Sky Eye." Climbing to the observation deck to see the "big dish" is the highlight of the whole trip. To leave a quiet electromagnetic environment for the telescope, before entering the mountains you must store all electronic devices such as mobile phones, cameras, and smartwatches at the visitor service center, then transfer to a shuttle bus to reach the foot of the mountain and hike up more than 700 steps. Zodiac constellation patterns are embedded beside the steps, and if your stamina is limited you can also take a sightseeing bus instead. Standing on the observation deck at the summit, the 500 m aperture silver-gray "big dish" spreads out completely among the mountains, and the tiered viewing platforms let you examine its outline from different heights. There is no signal on the mountain, and you cannot take out your phone to take photos; this temporary "isolation from the world" is exactly the quiet that this telescope needs to work properly. The astronomy town at the foot of the mountain is a good place to round out the science popularization portion of the visit: the astronomy experience hall features themed exhibition halls on radio astronomy, galaxy exploration, and solar science popularization paired with sound, light, and electric interactive exhibits, and the on-site astronomical cinema screens astronomy films; electronic devices are allowed here, so you can take photos freely; the Nan Rendong Memorial Hall tells the story of the project from conception to completion in six chapters, and after seeing it, thinking back on that "pot" at the top of the mountain will feel very different; for a more thrilling experience, the motion seats in the dome flight theater can take you on a simulated "flight" over the telescope and the karst mountains. This telescope undertakes scientific tasks such as surveying neutral hydrogen in the universe, searching for pulsars, detecting interstellar molecules, and searching for signals of extraterrestrial civilizations, and it has discovered more than a thousand new pulsars since it began operation. With this background in mind, looking again at that "big wok" quietly "listening" to the universe, it is not just an artificial wonder, but more like a tireless listener to the cosmos.

Jiacha Scenic Spot is located in Jiacha Village, Bairu Town, Pingtang County, 47 kilometers away from the county seat, belonging to the lower reaches of Pingzhou River, covering an area of 45.1 square kilometers and 20 scenic spots. Since the Jiacha Attraction is only 402 meters above sea level, the low-latitude warm and humid climate has formed the unique subtropical scenery here. Jiacha Attraction integrates mountains, water, waterfalls, caves, bamboos and stones, and is handsome, beautiful, strange, secluded and beautiful, with its own distinctive characteristics. The strange and beautiful waterfalls, the thorny bamboos in belts and forests, the evergreen rattan bamboos and the clear green river water, the golden sand beach, the magical and deep karst caves, the beautiful canyons, the Buyi villages hidden in the lush bamboo forests and the rich folk customs have added charming charm to the mysterious land of Jiacha. Jiacha Waterfall is 40 meters wide and 37 meters high, light and beautiful. Due to the steep and uneven rock layers, the water flows down and crosses, just like a huge white silk that is neat, smooth, crystal clear and glittering spread on the rock wall, or like several endless long silver silks that are shuttled off the loom and fall into the Biyun Lake. "I suspect that the fairy is weaving white silk, and the white silk falls off the axis and hangs down to the sky" is a true portrayal of Jiacha Waterfall.

A regular ticket is sufficient, as you'll find that there's simply not enough time to visit the paid attractions if you go at midday. Also, you must bring a film camera next to the Fast sign. It must be a battery-free film camera with manual metering. If possible, bring your own film, as film cameras at the attraction aren't cheap—300 yuan for 36 exposures.

Driving here, the experience exceeded my expectations! Taking the dedicated lane allowed me to get up close and experience the awe-inspiring FAST telescope. A professional guide provided explanations throughout, and I was captivated by the many scientific explanations behind it. Seeing this monumental national achievement with my own eyes was deeply moving and definitely worth the trip.

A guide and a belayer lead 20 people; I personally think the number could be smaller, but otherwise it's a fantastic experience. One question I have is why caving in Guizhou is so expensive—it seems a bit exaggerated.

Address: Sky Bridge Scenic Area, Pingtang County, Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture Transportation: Self-driving Experience: After a second visit to the Xiaoqikong (Small Seven-hole Arch) in the morning, I added a visit to the Sky Bridge Scenic Area on my way to the FAST (China's Sky Eye). The 90-kilometer drive from the scenic area takes about two hours. The scenery along the way is equally stunning. Before entering the bridge, there are signs directing you to the scenic area and the service area. The Sky Bridge service area features a hotel, camping area, viewing platform, and a bridge science museum, making it a perfect spot for photo opportunities and study. Half of the top 100 world-class tallest bridges are in Guizhou, and four have won the Gustav Lindsahl Prize, the "Nobel Prize" of the world bridge community. Visiting Guizhou's bridges provides a compelling understanding of why China is known as an "infrastructure maniac." The Pingtang Bridge, also known as the "Sky Bridge," features a bridge science museum on the second floor of the main service area. It explains the history of bridge development in China and offers a wealth of information about bridges. It also features some of the country's most famous bridges. Later in the trip, we also planned to visit the Baling River Bridge and the Beipan River Bridge. We stopped for coffee, took photos, and flew our drones; it was truly relaxing.

This was a truly unique experience. Before coming, I read many travel guides and was worried about safety, but all my concerns vanished after meeting him. Coach Wang was professional, humorous, and stylish with his gray-white hair. He was about our age, passionate about nature exploration, and had extensive knowledge of the wilderness. He constantly pointed out interesting rocks and landscapes along the way. This hands-on nature lesson was well worth it. It allowed the children to learn the secrets of the deep mountains of Guizhou, witness unique mountain structures firsthand, improve their physical strength and endurance, and broaden their horizons. For me, it was also a novel experience. It was the first time I truly had the opportunity to venture deep into the mountains, as if I were experiencing the geological changes that had taken place over thousands of years.

We drove there from the Astronomical Town. We called to inquire before we went. The cave scenic area was closed due to heavy rain. It took less than two hours from entering to leaving. There were only three of us and we didn't see any other tourists.

It is very difficult to take a photo here, because our mobile phones and all electronic devices will be stored in the management office below. Of course, there are ways to take photos. The first way is to take a photo with the staff's camera. He will develop the photo and mail it to your home. The second way is to go to the Nan Rendong Memorial Hall to see our big fast.

The reason I went to Guizhou this time was because I saw the photos of Jiacha Waterfall and the scenic area. I was really attracted by it. Although it is small and remote, it really did not disappoint me. It is simple, original, and has a quiet charm.
