Hailv Island

[Hailv IslandNo island access from 2018 onward. Hai Lv Dao, renowned as the "fairy mountain on the sea and kingdom of gulls and egrets," lies just 2 nautical miles from the mainland. This mystical island blends legendary tales with breathtaking natural scenery, standing majestically amid the roaring waves as a secluded paradise. It serves as a vibrant sanctuary where black-tailed gulls and yellow-billed egrets coexist harmoniously, showcasing nature's wondrous cycle of life. The origin of Hai Lv Dao is rooted in a beautiful local legend. It's said that Erlang Shen, under the Jade Emperor's decree, once carried mountains to fill the sea and build Dongjing. Birds joyfully helped by carrying stones in their beaks. One day, as Erlang Shen was carrying two massive mountains near Chengshan Head, he suddenly heard a donkey braying in the East Sea and a rooster crowing on the West Sea shore. Startled, his carrying pole snapped, sending both mountains plunging into the ocean where they became islands - Hai Lv Dao to the east and Jiming Island to the west. The broken pole transformed into two towering stone pillars, one behind each island. The seagulls that had helped carry stones became the islands' eternal inhabitants, multiplying over generations until today's spectacular sight of hundreds of thousands of gulls darkening the skies. The immortal may be gone, but his magical birds remain, filling the air with their calls. Hai Lv Dao may be small in size, but it offers boundless joy within its compact space. When shrouded in sea mist, the island transforms into a mystical realm where sky and ocean blend indistinctly, with seagulls and herons calling intermittently as they emerge and vanish through the rain and fog. Every spring, Siberian seals migrate here for vacation. If you're lucky, you might discover colonies of seals basking and resting on the coastal rocks east of Flat Stone Ridge. The towering cliffs and rugged rocks on Hai Lv Dao provide safe nesting grounds for seabirds, while the abundant fish and shrimp in surrounding waters offer ample food for their young. With its ideal climate and pristine, pollution-free environment, the island has become the premier breeding site for black-tailed gulls in northern China. It also served as the filming location for the 28th Golden Rooster Award-winning movie "Gift from Heaven," which took seven years to produce. Vast stretches of hibiscus bushes, reeds, and wild jujube trees create a picturesque scene where white birds contrast beautifully with red blossoms. Across the sea, steep cliffs stand adorned with vibrant floral clusters. Hai Lv Dao, sculpted by tireless waves over millennia, rises with jagged peaks and fantastical rock formations. Together with the ebbing tides, endless ocean waves, and graceful seagulls, it forms a uniquely captivating island landscape that sparks endless wonder and leaves visitors enchanted. Note: Due to significant weather impacts on Hai Lv Dao, please check official updates for daily sailing status.Rongcheng · 35.4km from downtown

Chishan Scenic AreaIntroduction "Where mountains meet the sea, witness the wonders of Chishan in Weihai." Chishan Scenic Area is located by Shidao Bay in Weihai, named after its 369-meter-high main peak that glows red under sunlight. Spanning 12.8 square kilometers, this national AAAA-level tourist attraction and provincial scenic area boasts over 95% forest coverage. With over 60,000 negative oxygen ions per cubic centimeter, it's a natural forest oxygen bar and a key national forest wellness development base. Here, amidst swirling clouds and mist, the landscape is breathtakingly beautiful. Ancient legends speak of "divine spirits returning to Chishan," adding a mystical aura to this sacred eastern mountain by the sea. The main deity worshipped in Chishan Scenic Area is the Chishan Ming Shen (Radiant God of Chishan). According to lore, the deity's true form emerged from the Red Gate Cave of Chishan. It is said that Chishan Ming Shen is the embodiment of Rihua Jun—the sun god revered by ancient ancestors—manifesting in Chishan. This mighty guardian of mountains and seas ensures bountiful catches and safe returns for coastal fishermen. For centuries, the people here have thrived in peace and prosperity under the protection of Chishan Ming Shen, whose divine power and benevolence are deeply revered. Thus, the deity is honored as the Guardian God of the Sea and the God of Peace. In 824 AD, the Silla merchant Jang Bogo built the Chishan Fahua Temple here. Later, the Japanese monk Ennin journeyed to Chishan three times, residing at Fahua Temple for two years and nine months. Chishan Scenic Area gained fame during the Tang Dynasty through Ennin's writings in *The Record of a Pilgrimage to China in Search of the Law*, which recounted how Chishan Ming Shen miraculously ensured his safe return from Chishan Bay (now Shidao Bay). Following Ennin's wishes, his disciples later constructed the Chishan Zen Temple to honor the deity. Meanwhile, Jang Bogo also built two Chishan Temples in Silla, expressing gratitude for the deity's protection, which helped him become a legendary maritime trader and national hero. From then on, Chishan Ming Shen was worshipped not only in Tang China but also in Japan, Silla, Persia, and Arabia. The legacy of Fahua Temple weaves a tale of "a thousand-year temple uniting three nations," binding history, faith, and culture across borders. Chishan Scenic Area is renowned as the "Sacred Mountain of the East," a "Buddhist Sanctuary," a hub of "Island Folk Culture," and a "Forest Park." Its main attractions include: - The ancient Chishan Fahua Temple, a millennium-old shrine connecting China, Korea, and Japan. - The Jixiang Ping'an Valley, a grand dynamic musical fountain square themed around good fortune and safety. - The towering 58.8-meter-tall Chishan Ming Shen (Guardian Deity of Peace). - The Zhang Baogao Memorial Hall, chronicling the legendary life of Korea's maritime king. - The Chishan Zen Temple, which recounts the Tang Dynasty pilgrimage of Japanese monk Ennin. - The Rongcheng Folk Museum, showcasing northern China's cultural heritage. - The Chishan Intangible Cultural Heritage Innovation Center, offering hands-on experiences with traditional crafts. - The Shilian Yashi Gallery, a celebrated exhibition of water and stone art. - The Guanyin Altar, a serene retreat dedicated to the Bodhisattva of Compassion. - The "Dragon-Phoenix Jade Love Story" Jade Carving Hall, depicting Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei's tragic romance. - Additional highlights like Fahua Pagoda, Dragon-Phoenix Lake, Baihua Garden, and Daming Sacred Realm. This scenic area is a coastal paradise blending seaside charm, mountain vistas, fishing culture, and spiritual pilgrimage.Rongcheng · 30.1km from downtown

Hailu Island, located in the northern waters of Chengshantou, Rongcheng City, Weihai, Shandong Province, is an uninhabited island that cannot be visited. The main activity is a boat tour around the island and feeding the seagulls. Known as the "Hometown of Black-tailed Gulls in China," it attracts tens of thousands of black-tailed gulls every spring and summer, making it a popular spot for observing seagulls and coastal landforms. The core experience is the boat ride: Visitors must board a boat at Longyan Port, a journey of approximately 40 minutes. During the trip, visitors can feed the seagulls up close on the deck, but walking tours on the island are not available. Best viewing time: The black-tailed gull breeding season is from March to mid-August, when the flocks are at their largest and the scene is most spectacular. From late August to September, the gulls begin their migration, and their numbers decrease significantly. Reference ticket price: The estimated price for an adult boat ticket is approximately 120 yuan per person (including the island tour, but not allowing boarding). Some pink-themed cruises may have additional charges. Opening Hours: Usually 07:30-18:00, with ticket sales and entry ceasing around 16:30. Please refer to the park's announcement for specific times on the day. Driving Directions: Navigate to "Hailvdao Scenic Area" or "Xixiakou Village Longyan Port Wharf." Parking is available nearby. Public Transportation: From Weihai Bus Station, take the "Weihai-Chengshantou" bus and get off at the Zoo stop, then take a taxi. From Rongcheng Bus Station, take bus routes 201/202 to the vicinity of the scenic area.

"Eastward Journey: Ode to Chengshan" is a unique, moving, live-action performance that utilizes the real-life scenery of Chengshantou's mountains and sea, creating a stunning atmosphere with its lighting and special effects. Following the storyline, the performance recreates historical events from the Qin and Qi dynasties. The actors' performances are captivating, weaving together national sentiments and personal emotions, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in a thousand-year-old tale. This spectacular show is definitely worth seeing when visiting Chengshantou, and advance booking is highly recommended.

The cable car requires agility to ascend and descend. The first section offers only average views, while the latter section features a sheer cliff and the sea, offering a much better view. The price is worth the scenery. However, it may not be suitable for all time slots.

There were no seagulls to feed during the National Day holiday, but Jiming Island had beautiful scenery and few people. A 3-hour walk around the island with kids and elderly people was plenty of time, without interfering with other afternoon activities.

If the weather is good, you'll get great photos. It's a bit far from Weihai city center, so you'll need about 1 to 2 hours to visit. You could say this is a limited-time sea view in Weihai.

I bought round-trip ferry tickets to Jiming Island online, which was cheaper than buying them on-site, and the redemption process was smooth. The ferry ride to the island, accompanied by seagulls flying overhead, was very soothing. The island isn't large, and the mountain trails are pleasant to walk on. There are plenty of photo spots, including a cliffside coffee shop, a white chapel, and seaweed-thatched houses, creating a charming, authentic fishing village atmosphere. It's perfect for a half-day trip, and overall, a great experience worth visiting.

Rongcheng Motianling is located on the north side of Chengshantou, surrounded by the sea on three sides. Its highlight is the cross-sea cableway, offering panoramic views of the clear Yellow Sea and red cliffs. The gentle cliffside walkway along the sea is ideal for leisurely strolls with elderly people and children. Historical relics related to Qi Jiguang's resistance against Japanese pirates are preserved here, and there is also a crystal cave for rest. The park's facilities are basic; it is recommended to combine a visit with Chengshantou, which can be completed in half a day.

Weihai really knows how to do it. Even when it comes to the sea, every beach in Weihai manages to become a trendy spot, a perfect photo opportunity. Xianghai Beach is one such contrived yet incredibly photogenic spot. Every few steps along the beach, there are props or facilities for taking pictures, and waves of tourists are snapping away. It's interesting; this has become a "highlight" and a unique feature of domestic tourism in recent years.

The outdoor hot springs are a unique feature, but out of the eighteen springs, three are closed. The buffet is inferior to the breakfasts at mid-to-high-end hotels; the facilities are outdated and poorly maintained, making it not very cost-effective. For a region like Northeast China where hot springs are so prevalent, it's a paltry offering. The complimentary fruit and drink bar is almost nonexistent, mainly offering tea with a very limited selection. It might be acceptable for locals.
