Checkpoint Charlie

4.4/5
143 reviews
Checkpoint Charlie, located at the junction of Friedrichstraße and Zimmerstraße, is a testimony and symbol of the Cold War, and from 1961 to 1990, it was the crossing point for Allied troops, non-Germans and diplomatic personnel between East and West Berlin. Now it is surrounded by tall modern buildings, and only a small section of the Berlin Wall remains. On the side facing West Berlin, there is a famous warning sign in English, Russian, French and German: "YouarenowleavingtheAmericansector." ( "You're leaving the U.S. defense zone right now.") The replicas are currently seen, and the originals are kept in the adjoining Checkpoint Charlie Museum. At the remnants of the Berlin Wall, there are Russian and American "soldiers" dressed as staff, and you can take photos with them for 2 euros. If you want to learn more about checkpoints, the Berlin Wall, and the history of the split between Germany and Germany, check out the Checkpoint Charlie Museum next door. The museum is located at the back of Checkpoint Charlie. The facade is not large, but it is unique inside. The collection of historical materials is very rich, and it shows this heavy history in a black and humorous way. Here you can see all kinds of props used by people who tried to climb over the Berlin Wall: homemade hot air balloons, tunnels, hidden compartments of cars and single-person submarines used in the escape to West Berlin, etc. Courage and resourcefulness of the citizens of the GDR. In addition, there are personal data and detailed records about those who advocated freedom and human rights in those days, which is one of the must-see attractions in Berlin. In addition to this, the Checkpoint Charlie Museum has opened an exhibition hall on international non-violent human rights movements, with topics including world-renowned human rights movements led by Gandhi to Lech Walesa, where you can see the original diary written by Mahatma Gandhi , used clogs, typewriters used to draft the Eastern European Charter 77, etc. There are souvenir shops and cafés at Checkpoint Charlie, and there are also many souvenir shops outside the museum, among which there are special souvenirs with fragments of the Berlin Wall that can be purchased as souvenirs.Berlin · 15.3km from Schonefeld

Britzer Garten

Britzer Garten is located in the south of Berlin and is a masterpiece by landscape architect Wolfgang Miller. Although the scenery is man-made, it feels completely natural. It features lakes, meadows, and gentle slopes, where you can spot various fish swimming leisurely by the lakeside. In summer, open-air concerts are often held by the lake, featuring a variety of musical styles to suit every taste. Children will also find plenty to enjoy here, with puppet shows being a particular favorite. When spring arrives and flowers bloom, the lawns are adorned with beautiful flower beds, and the gardens are filled with the scent of flowers and the sound of birds, making for a truly delightful experience.Berlin · 8.7km from Schonefeld

The Terrible Execution Grounds, located west of Checkpoint Charlie, once housed some of the more terrifying institutions of the Third Reich. None of these buildings exist today, but a sad open-air exhibit called "The Execution Grounds of Terror" since 1997 recreates the historical importance of the site and the brutal institutions that housed it at the time. The exhibit is in German, but free audio commentary in English is available at the information desk. Note that some of the photos in the exhibit may be too gory for children.Berlin · 15.5km from Schonefeld

Berlin Underworld was founded by a historical association specializing in urban underground architecture. It has excavated and organized long-sealed air-raid shelters, tunnels, and underground fortifications beneath the streets, transforming them into a unique museum and a series of themed exhibition areas. Its core exhibition area is located within a WWII air-raid bunker preserved in its post-war state, with spaces extending across multiple underground levels. The exhibition areas offer a rich variety of themed experiences. The "Dark Worlds" tour recreates the WWII era from the perspective of ordinary citizens, preserving double-decker iron beds, restroom cubicles, wall signage, and war relics, while also connecting the history of the city's pneumatic postal tubes, brewery cellars, and the evolution of underground pipelines. The Cold War themed tour delves into nuclear bunkers and showcases the history of escape tunnels beneath the Berlin Wall. This site organically combines underground engineering facilities with urban history, providing visitors with a unique experience to understand the city's modern transformation from an underground perspective.Berlin · 19.2km from Schonefeld

A memorable place in history. The only place that you could cross into east or west Berlin. Doesn’t take long to see, but should see it.

A great urban park in Berlin with significant historical value. It is located on the former airport site of Tempelhof and it's actually an immense area which you can walk around. It really gives you a scale of how big an airport really is. I really liked how the terminal buildings were kept, although when I visited they weren't opened for visiting. It's a great place to bike, especially as it's quite a large chunk of area. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and highly recommend it!

The entire execution ground has a very cold feeling. It was also a very important custody facility during World War II. Many Jews were destroyed here. There are also many historical memorials from World War II.

I absolutely love the Berlin Zoological Garden! The layout is incredibly well-planned, making it an absolute breeze to navigate. Unlike many massive zoos, the pathing here is so clever and seamless that your visit never feels tiring or exhausting.A couple of major highlights from my trip:• The Goat Feeding: Getting to feed the goats directly was such a joyful, interactive experience.• The Seals: Watching the playful seals splash around and put on a show was pure entertainment. It is a beautifully designed, relaxing park that offers a fantastic experience for animal lovers of all ages.Highly recommended!

[Overall Impressions] There is a four-story underground space beneath a Berlin subway station. It resembles an air-raid shelter used during World War II, but unlike Japanese air-raid shelters, the facilities are integrated into a kind of town. The guide's stories are also very interesting, and it's definitely worth a visit. [How to Visit/Duration] - The tour is conducted as a 90-minute tour. There are no Japanese tours, but English tours are available. I took the most common tour, the "Dark Worlds." - The tour I took was guided by a native English speaker, so I enjoyed the 90 minutes in easy-to-understand English. However, if you can't hear the explanations, it may be difficult to understand, as there is almost no written explanation. [Ticket Price] - The price is 13€ for students and other eligible visitors. - You can purchase tickets directly on the day, but they can often be fully booked, especially on weekends. If you make a reservation in advance through the website, you will receive a QR code, which you can simply show. ・As stated in the PDF you received upon completing your reservation, the meeting point is right outside the station (second photo). [Important Notes] ・Photography is prohibited inside the cave. ・There are no restrooms once the tour begins, and no time allotted for toilet use. ・There are no luggage storage areas or lockers. ・An exhibition guide book is available (English, 5€), but the building selling it seems to close around 4 PM. Please note that if you are taking a tour starting at 3:30 PM, the building will already be closed by the end of the tour and you will not be able to purchase it.

Suitable for engineering students who love machinery and technology. It has everything from land, sea and air, and some models of physical principles. It is very large and takes at least half a day to visit. The exhibits in the aviation section are very good, especially the exhibits related to the German Air Force during World War II. Boys should like it! And the ticket price is not expensive, it is definitely worth a visit!
