97 reviews
The Tottori Sand Dunes are located in the eastern part of Tottori Prefecture, with a length of about 16 kilometers from east to west and a width of about 2 kilometers from north to south. They are relatively large sand dunes in Japan. This is a mountain peak formed by the accumulation of volcanic ash falling on the mud sand of the Chiyogawa River. It is a masterpiece of nature created after 100,000 years of wind and waves from the Sea of Japan. There are depressions as deep as 40 meters and hills as high as 50 meters on the sand dunes; there are patterns called "wind patterns" blown out by strong winds, and there are sand curtains that slide down like an avalanche from the surface of the sand dunes. These magnificent sand dunes are ever-changing. never stopped. Take the cable car down to the coastline, and you can enjoy the majestic and expansive scenery of the boundless sea and sand dunes. In addition to the view of the sand dunes, there are various recreational activities, such as riding on an exotic camel or horse-drawn carriage, or taking a paraglider and sandboarding.Tottori City · 4.5km from downtown

Fushimi Inari Taisha

7.1
4.7/5
2.3k reviews
Fushimi Inari Taisha is located at the western foot of Mount Inari in southern Kyoto and serves as the head shrine of all Inari shrines across Japan. According to legend, in 711 AD, the deity Inari, who governs bountiful harvests and prosperous commerce, was enshrined here, and the shrine has thrived with worshippers for centuries. Its signature view is the vermilion "Senbon Torii," a seemingly endless tunnel of torii gates stretching up the mountain behind the main hall. This iconic scene is not only one of Kyoto's most representative images but also widely recognized due to the famous scene in the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha," where a young girl runs through the torii gate tunnel. A short walk east from JR Inari Station brings you to the entrance. Passing through the towering vermilion torii gate and proceeding along the main approach, you'll encounter the romon gate, said to have been donated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1589 to pray for his mother's recovery. Beyond it lie the main hall and other principal structures. Stone fox statues are ubiquitous throughout the shrine, as foxes are considered messengers of the rice god Inari, often depicted holding keys or rice ears in their mouths. Before worshiping, visitors can purify their hands at the temizuya beside the main hall following the illustrated instructions, then clap their hands to pray at the main hall - prayers here often relate to business prosperity and financial fortune. Drawing omikuji fortunes and writing ema votive tablets are common practices; fox-faced ema can be personally decorated with expressions, while miniature torii-shaped ema are equally charming. Fox-shaped omamori amulets make popular souvenirs. Go around to the back of the main hall to find the entrance to the Senbon Torii. Hundreds upon hundreds of torii gates line the path all the way to the summit of Mt. Inari, with weathered, faded gates densely interwoven with bright vermilion ones. When sunlight filters through the gaps, the scene is particularly spectacular, making it a popular spot for photography enthusiasts. Each torii gate was donated by an individual or company, with the donor's name and date inscribed on the back. The path up the mountain is not a straight line; it includes both wide passages that seem to stretch on forever and smaller, parallel paths. Rest areas and sacred sites are scattered along the way, and most travelers come specifically for this mountain trail. After walking for about half an hour, the torii gates gradually become sparse. Upon reaching the Yotsutsuji intersection halfway up the mountain, you can overlook the Kyoto cityscape. Many people also make a special trip up the mountain at night to see the night view. Many travelers turn back here, but if you persist to the summit, the mountain path forms a loop. Several small shrines are distributed around the summit area, and a round-trip generally takes two to three hours, which is also equivalent to experiencing a traditional "Oyama Meguri" (mountain pilgrimage).Japan · Kyoto

Shinsekai is a famous old district in Osaka, including Tsutenkaku Tower and many historic shops. It's an iconic scene showcasing Osaka's unique character, filled with the charm of a traditional downtown area. Its distinctive neon signs and various 3D billboards are its visual landmarks, and it has appeared in many films and television shows. The northern part of Shinsekai was modeled after Paris, while the southern part was modeled after Coney Island in New York. Tsutenkaku Tower, one of Osaka's landmarks, is located in the northern part of Shinsekai. Although this iron tower reaching into the sky looks somewhat simple and dilapidated, it evokes a sense of nostalgia for many Osaka residents. Shinsekai has many nostalgic alleyways, one of which is Takumi-Yokado in the southeast. It is said to have gotten its name from the "takumi" sound made when geisha played the taisho koto (a traditional Japanese stringed instrument). Its official name now is Nanyo-dori Shopping Street.During Osaka's post-World War II reconstruction period, Takumiyoko Alley was a popular shopping and dining street for locals, and it still retains its original appearance. Lined with izakayas (Japanese pubs), yakiniku (grilled meat) restaurants, general stores, and chess rooms filled with middle-aged men, it's a lively area. Another must-try food in Shinsekai is kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers), one of Osaka's most famous snacks. This delicacy comes in a variety of fillings, including chicken, beef, pumpkin, asparagus, banana, and ice cream desserts. Kushikatsu shops are almost everywhere in Shinsekai, and they become incredibly crowded after nightfall.Japan · Osaka

Nara Park is a historic city park in Nara City, Japan, opened in 1880 and famous for its herds of free-roaming deer. The park features expansive lawns, lush trees, and scattered ponds and streams, and is home to a large number of deer designated as natural monuments. The deer often forage and play on the grass, and will also approach visitors. There are stalls in the park selling deer crackers, which visitors can purchase to feed the deer. When feeding the deer, it is best to take one piece at a time and put the food away promptly after feeding to avoid teasing the deer by holding the crackers for too long. The park is backed by the Mt. Kasuga Primeval Forest and is surrounded by a rich natural environment, with unique scenery in each of the four seasons. In spring, fresh greenery contrasts with cherry blossoms; in the fall, you can enjoy the autumn leaves; and on ordinary days, it is also suitable for strolling along the lawns and forest paths. Tobihino is an open lawn where you can often see deer moving about freely. Historic buildings and cultural heritage sites such as Tōdai-ji, Kasugataisha Shrine, and Kohfukuji Temple are located around the park, blending natural scenery with the atmosphere of the ancient capital. Every February and August, Kasugataisha Shrine holds the Mantoro (Ten Thousand Lanterns) festival, where the stone lanterns along the approach and the hanging lanterns are lit one by one, creating a tranquil and traditional night view.Japan · Nara City

One moment it felt like walking into a desert, then after climbing over the highest sand ridge, the sea suddenly opened up, and the wind picked up instantly—that moment was well worth it. The sand dunes themselves are more undulating than I imagined, especially the "Horse's Back" section. It doesn't seem like much from a distance, but you'll definitely feel the strain as you climb. The sand is very soft; you sink a little with every step. In summer, the sun is directly overhead, making it much more physically demanding than at ordinary tourist spots. But precisely because of this, when you reach the top and look back, the vast expanse of sand, the tiny figures of people, and the distant sea blending into one create a very unique sense of vastness. Remember to bring enough water; you'll find yourself expending a lot of energy without even realizing it.

Hidden within this room lies the charm of nature. Pushing open the door, verdant greenery greets you first. Leaning against the window, the murmuring of a spring fills the air, while mist and haze drift into the room along the window sill. Each season presents its own unique beauty here: spring brings forth new bamboo shoots, summer offers lush shade, autumn fills the courtyard with the fragrance of osmanthus, and winter sees snow tapping against the window. Every detail in the room reflects thoughtful consideration: the mattress's firmness perfectly supports a tired back, the toiletries have a pleasant, non-irritating scent, and a warm, yellow light awaits you at the door when you return late at night. This is not just a temporary resting place, but a sanctuary for the soul. After a few days, even the most tense nerves gradually relax, allowing you to rediscover your most relaxed state.

Having just recovered from a prolonged illness, I was so weak I could barely walk. The few days I spent at this hotel gradually restored my energy and spirit. It allows you to shed your fatigue and let your soul find poetic peace in its tranquility. All the lighting was soft and warm, not too bright to make you dizzy; the bed's firmness was just right to support your back, preventing soreness after lying down for a while; the meals were warm, easily digestible congee and side dishes; even the air had a mild scent, not irritating my sensitive respiratory tract. Every day I leisurely strolled in the courtyard, watching the wildflowers slowly bloom in the corner, sitting under the eaves basking in the sun, even my steps were light. There was no need to rush my recovery, no need to force myself to get better quickly. I stole a half-day of leisure, finding a long-lost sense of ease and freedom. Those few days I lived entirely at my own pace, without any pressure or urging, and my recovery was much faster than I had expected.

Nara Park is a beautiful place to enjoy nature and experience one of Japan’s most famous attractions. The friendly deer roaming freely throughout the park made the visit unique and unforgettable. Feeding the deer with special crackers and watching them bow before receiving food was a fun experience. The park is spacious, with peaceful walking paths, large green lawns, and beautiful scenery. I also enjoyed visiting the nearby temples and shrines, which added to the cultural experience. The atmosphere was relaxing, especially in the morning when there were fewer crowds. It is a perfect place for families, couples, and photographers. I highly recommend visiting if you are looking for a mix of nature, history, and memorable interactions with the famous Nara deer.
