Hasuhai is the abbreviation of Halawusuhai in Mongolian, which means black water lake. It is an oxbow lake left by the change of the Yellow River and is an outflow freshwater lake of the Daheihe River system. Hubei is the Daqingshan Mountain, which is surrounded by farmland and pastures on the east, south and west sides, and is known as the "West Lake outside the Great Wall". The water depth is about 2 meters, the bottom of the lake is overgrown with weeds, and the water quality is fertile. Various birds breed in the reeds on the lake surface, hovering over the vast lake surface when taking off in the sky, forming a very spectacular picture. Every spring and summer, the lake water is crystal clear, different types of small fish swim freely, and all kinds of birds hover on the vast lake surface, flickering in the reeds, which makes people wonder. There is a reservoir and a fishing ground in the lake. Tourist boats are set up for tourists to enjoy the scenery of the lake and mountains, and they can taste fresh fish on the boat.Tumed Left Banner · 17.8km from downtown

Qiandao Lake is part of the Yuquan section of Dahei River in Xiaoheihe Town. It was originally a dry riverbed. Some sand miners did not fill in the sand pits after digging the sand, leaving deep pits of irregular shapes. In addition, the long-term rainfall and flood discharge formed this body of water.Tumed Left Banner · 38.4km from downtown

Saishang Old Street

295 reviews
Saishang Old Street is a historic street in the old town area of Hohhot featuring Ming and Qing architectural styles, with a history dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. After Dazhao Temple was built, a market gradually formed on the west side in front of the temple, marking the origin of the old street. The current streetscape has undergone comprehensive renovation, preserving its traditional style by restoring it to its original appearance. Brick-and-wood buildings with blue bricks and gray tiles line both sides of the street, while flying eaves, brick carvings, and traditional shop signs showcase the streetscape of the former Guihua City. This area has been a hub for commercial activities since the Ming and Qing dynasties, where furs, dairy products, tea, and silk were traded between the grasslands and the Central Plains. Today, you can find antiques, calligraphy and paintings, jade, coins, leather paintings, leather goods, sheep-horn combs, and ethnic-style accessories along the street, and some shops also showcase traditional handicrafts such as wool felt pyrography. The district retains a certain ethnic cultural character, with the architecture, shops, and handicrafts collectively forming the overall character of the old street. At night, lanterns and shop lights illuminate the street, and the blue-brick and gray-tiled alleys present a view different from that of the daytime.Hohhot · 44.9km from Tumed Left Banner

Datong Ancient City

4.7/5
497 reviews
Datong Ancient City is the historic core of Datong, Shanxi. It served as the capital Pingcheng during the Northern Wei dynasty, the western auxiliary capital during the Liao and Jin dynasties, and a strategic frontier stronghold in the Ming dynasty, earning it the enduring title "northern key." Over its 2,000-year history spanning dynastic changes, the city's location remained largely unchanged, preserving its chessboard-style street grid centered on Sipailou to this day. The 2008 conservation and restoration project reunited the city walls, reconnected the moat, and gradually revived ancient architecture and old streets, layering the grandeur of an ancient capital with modern life within the same walled city. The ancient town offers an exceptionally dense concentration of noteworthy sights: in Huayan Temple's Liao- and Jin-dynasty halls, the graceful "clasped-hands, smiling" Liao-dynasty bodhisattva statue in the Scripture Depository Hall has long been hailed as the "Oriental Venus"; Shanhua Temple preserves a complete complex of Liao- and Jin-era wooden architecture. The Nine-dragon Wall, originally a glazed screen wall before the Ming-dynasty Dai Prince's residence (destroyed in war), survives with its nine coiling dragons still radiant—older and larger than its counterparts in Beijing's Forbidden City and Beihai Park. Climbing the reconstructed Ming-style city walls reveals a bird's-eye view of the square town's crisscrossing four main streets and orderly rooftops. An evening wait for sunset on the ramparts, followed by the illuminated outlines of walls and watchtowers after dark, makes for one of the town's most enchanting moments. Walking is recommended for touring: the attractions inside the city walls are spaced closely, allowing Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, the Nine-dragon Wall, and the drum tower to form a connected route. When tired, you may turn into the area around East Drum Tower Street, where time-honored shops and snack stores are concentrated, making it ideal for resting and replenishing. The ancient town covers a considerable area, so allocate at least half a day and wear comfortable shoes to leisurely appreciate the layered historical depth of this ancient capital.China · Datong

Five Pagoda Temple

Wuta Temple, formerly known as Cideng Temple, is located in the southeast of the old city of Hohhot. Once all the temple buildings collapsed, only this pagoda was left, so later generations learned that there was a temple here, and it was named Wuta Temple when it was rebuilt. Wuta Temple is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery and the birthplace of Tibetan Buddhism in Mongolia. The south of Wuta Temple faces Wuta Temple Square, and the entrance is also here. The layout of Wuta Temple is typical of the central axis of the Han nationality. The central axis runs from north to south, and the two sides are strictly symmetrical. The temple is divided into three courtyards, namely the Sanshi Buddha Temple in the south, the Cultural Exhibition Court in the middle and the Cideng Temple in the north. The area of Wuta Temple is not large, with a depth of only about 150 meters. Entering the temple from the south gate of Wuta Temple, there are small white pagodas on both sides in the south of the park, which has the characteristics of Tibetan Buddhism. Directly opposite is the Sanshi Buddha Hall. The architecture of the Sanshi Buddha Hall not only has the characteristics of Han palaces, but also the style of ethnic minorities and Tibetans. This is also the general style of the entire temple building. After passing through the Sanshi Buddha Hall, you arrive at the courtyard in the middle. The building opposite is clearly written with "Hushizhao Temple Cultural Exhibition". Inside the building of the temple culture exhibition, there are historical portraits of Tsongkhapa and other figures on the left wall, and on the right side are the pictures of the existing Vajra seat relic pagoda in my country, reflecting the long history of the temple culture in Hohhot. Then came to the courtyard in the north, in the middle of the courtyard is the main hall of Cideng Temple, behind the main hall is the relic pagoda. This stupa was built in the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty and is about 16 meters high. When visiting the Wuta Temple, you can not only watch it from the outside, but also go up to the top of the pagoda, overlooking the whole temple, with a good view. There is a Mongolian astronomical map stone carving on the north wall behind the stupa. The diameter of the astronomical map is 144.5 cm.Hohhot · 46km from Tumed Left Banner

Thousand Island Lake in Hohhot is a beautiful scenic spot in Hohhot after ecological restoration. The lake is wide and dotted with many small islands. The scenery varies in different seasons. It is full of vitality in spring, shaded by trees in summer, magnificent in autumn, and covered in silver in winter. The rime landscape is particularly charming. The ecological environment here is good. It is a habitat and migration transit station for migratory birds. In winter, rare birds such as red-crested pochard and swan often overwinter here, attracting many tourists to come for bird watching. It is a good place for citizens to relax and get close to nature.

The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is the pinnacle of ancient architecture in Shanxi. Unlike the "Liao and Jin art" of Huayan Temple, it is a "wooden miracle" that will shock you purely with its mechanics and structure.

It's close to Jokhang Temple, the scenery is very good, the overall environment is good, the price is reasonable, and the service at each stall is very warm, polite and thoughtful. There are 3 cute lambs on the right hand side of the travel photography booth just 50 meters after entering the old street. I took out my mobile phone to take a photo of the lambs eating grass, but was scolded by the female boss. She said that I couldn't take photos if I didn't travel photography. Her words were very unpleasant, which immediately affected my mood for traveling. I was particularly upset. If you can't take photos, don't put them on the road. Alas~ It affects the overall image of the old street too much.

This is the most spectacular iron flower display I've ever seen! The program was diverse and engaging, the host was witty, the audience interaction was lively, the iron flower workers were incredibly skilled, and the iron flowers were dazzling and colorful – the effect was absolutely stunning! Thumbs up! 👍👍👍

The ancient city is beautiful at night with the lights on, and all the attractions are within walking distance. There are many restaurants and popular eateries, but expect to wait over an hour during peak hours. Supermarkets are scarce within the ancient city; delivery is the only option if you need food.

It's on par with the National Museum of China. If you like the National Museum, you definitely should visit. It has many well-preserved treasures and gold artifacts. The restaurant on the first floor is reasonably priced, but the sign is blocked; be sure to ask a staff member for directions. They serve excellent Inner Mongolian specialties! 👍🏻

It's definitely worth going. The ticket price is very reasonable, the dances are fantastic, and the lighting is amazing. Maybe not many people know about this great place yet. The indoor show starts at 7 pm and the outdoor show starts at 8 pm, both of which are excellent. They have strong storylines, the timing is great, and there's also a silver ticket promotion, which is very interesting. Of course, there are also performances during the day, but they're not as spectacular as the night show. I highly recommend going at night.

On August 31st, I took advantage of the weekend for a two-day, one-night special forces tour of Hohhot. It happened to rain, so I'm especially grateful to the two train drivers who drove my son and me to the door to prevent us from getting soaked. Two weeks in advance was perfect. It's a bit chilly in the mornings and evenings now, so you can rent an electric scooter and combine the train ride with walking.
