Travel back to the Northern Song inside Wanbi Building — traveler post in Longyan

Travel back to the Northern Song inside Wanbi Building

Zhao Family Fort 400-year time-travel guide🏡 Less famous than the Yongding tulou! Tucked away in Huxi She Township, Zhangpu, there’s a “mini Bianjing of southern Fujian” that Southern Song imperial descendants have guarded for 400 years. Even more remarkable, within a five-li radius there are two other nationally protected cultural sites—Yian Fort and the residence of Lan Tingzhen—collectively known as the Five Li, Three Cities. In short: if Yongding tulou are the Hakka people’s collective strongholds, Zhao Family Fort is a breathing, hidden dynasty dream of a fallen royal clan. 🧐 First, who built Zhao Family Fort Zhao Family Fort was built by descendants of Zhao Ruohuo, prince of Minchong during the Southern Song. After the Southern Song fell, Zhao Ruohuo changed his surname to Huang to avoid capture by the Yuan forces and lived in exile in Zhangpu. The family restored the Zhao surname during the early Ming. In 1600 (the 28th year of Wanli), the 10th-generation descendant Zhao Fan returned in glory and expanded the fort. What really astonishes is the layout—outer city, inner city, and Wanbi Building—directly mirroring Bianjing’s outer city, inner city, and imperial inner court. Zhao’s descendants, longing for their ancestral empire, recreated a scaled-down Bianjing deep in southern Fujian. 🚗 Getting there: driving is easiest Driving (highly recommended): take the Shenhai Expressway and exit at the Zhao Family Fort interchange. The exit is only 3 km from the old town, so you’ll be there in no time. From Zhangzhou city center it’s about 50 minutes, from Xiamen about 70 minutes. Public transport: Zhangzhou South passenger station has shuttles to Zhao Family Fort, but services are limited—confirm return times in advance. ⚠️ Three-city loop: Zhao Family Fort, Yian Fort, and Lan Tingzhen residence are all within a 10-minute drive of each other. Driving is the best option to visit all three in one day. 🗺️ One-day highlights route (visit all three without backtracking) Morning: Zhao Family Fort (most attractions concentrated here) → Noon: Lan Tingzhen residence (small, quick visit) → Afternoon: Yian Fort (stroll and feel local life) → Return Locals’ classic order is Zhao Family Fort → Lan Tingzhen residence → Yian Fort. Aim to arrive at Zhao Family Fort before 9:00 AM for softer light and fewer visitors. 📸 Zhao Family Fort must-see spots 1. Wanbi Building — 13.6m tall symbolizing the return of the jade intact The complex’s centerpiece, a three-story Song-style rammed-earth building, stands 13.6m tall and evokes the idiom “return the jade intact.” The character for “bi” (jade disk) in the building’s name deliberately shows only half of the top-right “xin” stroke, symbolizing generations of hardship the imperial descendants endured to build it. The third-floor arched windows make a perfect photo frame, capturing the old village and distant hills. 2. Bian-style bridge — a Song-era stone bridge inspired by Along the River During the Qingming Festival A stone bridge spans the pond, modeled on the scene in Along the River During the Qingming Festival, with a hexagonal pavilion on the bridge. It’s the best spot for reflections—when the water is calm, the bridge and pavilion mirror perfectly. 3. Ink pond stone stele — authentic Mi Fu calligraphy A stele inscribed with the two characters “Ink pond,” 1.56m tall with 0.5m-high characters, attributed to Mi Fu, one of the four great Song calligraphers. It’s one of Zhao Family Fort’s most precious artifacts—calligraphy fans shouldn’t miss it. 4. Yu stele — one of only three in China Also called the Gouluo stele, it records the water-control achievements of Yu the Great in 77 characters in ancient seal script. Only three steles of this kind remain in the country, and Zhao Family Fort has one. 🏰 Yian Fort — a living “ancient city fossil” This is the most down-to-earth place among the Five Li, Three Cities. Yian Fort was built with funds donated over generations by Huang Xingzhen, the 14th-generation descendant of a Huang retainer who followed Zhao Ruohuo. It’s a well-preserved civilian defensive fort. Unlike the museum feel of Zhao Family Fort, hundreds of Huang-family households still live in Yian Fort today; smoke from cooking fires is more common than tourists, and there’s virtually no commercialization. Key info: free admission, open all day, no reservation required—just go. For drivers, navigate to “Yian Fort parking lot”; there’s free parking at the fort entrance. The fort has four gates; local custom keeps the north gate closed and uses the south gate as the main entrance. Recommended activities: climb the east or south gate walls to photograph the crenellation light and shadow—sunset with village smoke in the frame is especially evocative. Wander the alleys to observe locals’ everyday rural life. 🏯 Lan Tingzhen residence — the martial grandeur of the “new town at the top of the altar” Lan Tingzhen was a Qing naval commander in Fujian credited with contributions at Pingtai Bay. His residence is large and rigorously laid out. The complex faces east-west and covers about 4,300 m², with a broad plaza paved with 360 slab stones arranged in a crosshatch pattern that emphasizes its military character. Free to visit, open all day. The fourth-side buildings form a wall-like enclosure, and a tulou-style structure inside creates an enclosed courtyard layout, hence the nickname “new town at the top of the altar.” Enter through the main gate and follow the central axis to see the entrance hall, main hall, rear hall, main building, and back wing; the left and right wings protect the compound and are connected by a water-passing corridor. 🍜 Foods to try in Zhangpu (30–50 RMB per person) · Old preserved radish soup: the soul dish. Zhangpu’s aged dried radish is local specialty and considered “black ginseng” by Minnan people. The soup is savory with a slight tang and really whets the appetite. The pork tripe with aged radish soup is the signature—rich and flavorful. · Fresh-seaweed hot pot: a popular farmhouse stall dish; for four people it’s about 50 RMB per person and great value. · Fried oyster omelet, baby squid, steamed mixed fish: Zhangpu is coastal—affordable seafood is a must-try, and small street eateries deliver satisfying portions for 30–40 RMB per person. · Zhangpu meatballs, salty rice cake, shacha noodles: authentic snacks full of local flavor. · Where to eat: near Zhao Family Fort there are farmhouse-style stalls locals frequent that focus on honest, fresh flavors. 🏠 Where to stay: stay in Zhangpu county seat There are limited, basic lodging options inside Zhao Family Fort. Staying in Zhangpu county offers more choices and better facilities. · Zhangpu Huicheng Hotel: close to Zhao Family Fort and the volcanic geology park, with free parking and WiFi, pet friendly, and offers mountain-view and balcony rooms. · chain hotels in the county seat: comfortable stays for just over 100 RMB with supermarkets and food options downstairs. · design-focused stays: near the Yongjia Tiandi shopping area there are designer hotels convenient for shopping and outings. 💡 Practical tips (avoid these pitfalls) 1. Tickets: Zhao Family Fort admission is 10–15 RMB (varies by source). Yian Fort and Lan Tingzhen residence are completely free. Of Zhao Family Fort’s three gates, the west gate may be unmanned and not have parking—use the north gate parking lot to enter. 2. Opening hours: Zhao Family Fort summer hours 8:00 AM–6:00 PM, standard hours 8:00 AM–5:30 PM. 3. Best time to visit: spring and autumn (March–May, September–November) feel most comfortable—sea breezes keep it cool without strong sun. Clear mornings or dusk have the best light and fewer visitors. 4. What to wear: paths are uneven stone slabs—wear non-slip shoes. Keep quiet inside the old town and respect residents’ lives. 5. Photo spots: Wanbi Building’s third-floor arched windows and the Bian-style bridge reflections are Zhao Family Fort classics; at Yian Fort, the wall crenellations and sunset with cooking smoke make the most evocative shots. 6. Combined trips: you can link to Jiaoluo Feicui Bay, the volcanic geology park, and Qixing Sea to make a 2–3 day deep trip in Zhangpu. 7. Budget: 1-day trip costs about 100–150 RMB per person (including tickets, transport, and meals). This Five Li, Three Cities cluster tucked in Zhangpu’s mountains lacks Yongding tulou’s tourist hordes and Yunshuiyao’s commercial bustle. Instead, it offers the 400-year vigil of a Zhao Song imperial line in Wanbi Building, the cooking-smoke life of hundreds of Huang households in Yian Fort, and martial echoes on the slab-stone plaza of Lan Tingzhen’s residence. Before tour groups discover it, add it to your Fujian list.

Don't wait for next time! Visit Yongding Tulou for the Mid-Autumn Festival and see Fujian's exclusive Hakka "Shaiqiu" (sun-drying of crops)

Always saying you'll travel next time? Don't leave any regrets this Mid-Autumn Festival! Depart from Quanzhou and head to the World Cultural Heritage site, Yongding Tulou. Experience a grand autumn harvest feast and encounter the unique romance of the Minxi harvest inside century-old Hakka circular buildings. 📍Attraction Address: Yongding Tulou Scenic Area, Longyan City, Fujian Province 🚗Transportation Guide (Departing from Quanzhou) High-speed rail: Quanzhou → Nanjing Station/Longyan Station. After arriving, take a taxi to the scenic area. Self-driving: Navigate to "Yongding Tulou Scenic Area." There is a large parking lot on-site, making parking convenient. 🎫Ticket Information We recommend purchasing a scenic area package ticket, which includes the scenic area shuttle bus! Visitor volume is high during the Mid-Autumn Festival, so be sure to book online in advance. We suggest arriving early to avoid peak crowds. I originally thought I was just checking in at century-old earthen buildings, but I was absolutely stunned by the "Shaiqiu" (sun-drying of crops)! The circular Tulou stand against the mountains, with bamboo winnowing baskets neatly arranged under the eaves. Bright red chili peppers, golden corn, and persimmons are spread out in a scattered pattern, fully maximizing the autumn harvest atmosphere🍂. All fatigue just melts away. 📸Comprehensive Travel Tips ✅Best time for photos: 9:00–11:00 AM. The light is soft, making it perfect for capturing the light and shadows of the Tulou interior and the Shaiqiu displays. It's easy to get backlit in the afternoon, which significantly reduces photo quality. ✅Outfit guide: Red long dresses or "New Chinese Style" clothing are top choices for great photos! UV rays in the mountains are strong, so hats and sunglasses are essential. The wooden stairs in the Tulou are steep, so be sure to wear comfortable flat shoes. ✅Recommended route (no backtracking): Chuxi Tulou Cluster (Shunhetang) → Shaiqiu photo spot → Riverside viewing platform. Check off both circular World Heritage Tulou and viral Shaiqiu scenes in one go. ✅Mid-Autumn travel reminder: High foot traffic during holidays, so we suggest leaving early. The wooden stairs inside the Tulou are narrow; please walk slowly and watch your step. ✅Hakka food recommendations: Hakka taro dumplings, Yongding beef balls, Boji Ban (winnowing basket rice noodles), and Tulou rice wine. You can find authentic flavors at farm-style restaurants around the scenic area. ✅Respectful tourism: Take your trash with you and protect the century-old Tulou architecture. The Shaiqiu displays are for viewing only; please do not touch or pick the crops. 🔥Hidden gem photo spots, save this! ▫️Second-floor wooden stairs of the Tulou: Climb up for a panoramic view of the circular building. ▫️Rooftop Shaiqiu bamboo trays: Chili and corn harvest displays. ▫️Shunhetang main gate: Great for an ancient, atmospheric photo. ▫️Riverside spot: Capture the reflection of the twin Tulou in the water. ✨Finally There's no need to rush your itinerary when visiting Yongding Tulou. Wander slowly through the circular ancient buildings, admire the layered Shaiqiu scenery, and immerse yourself in the century-old Hakka lifestyle. Visiting during the Mid-Autumn Festival allows you to explore a World Cultural Heritage site, enjoy the autumn Shaiqiu, and even admire the moon in the mountains at night. It's perfect for couples, family trips, and outings with friends.

I finally found a niche travel spot in Fujian. South China Tigers, here I come! — traveler post in Longyan

I finally found a niche travel spot in Fujian. South China Tigers, here I come!

Am I the last person to know that Meihuashan in Longyan has South China Tigers? There are all kinds of high-altitude amusement rides here, too—how could I not be tempted? 🐅 They are in a semi-free-range environment. It was my first time seeing tigers in the mountains, and I was so excited! There are also all kinds of little monkeys in the mountains. If you love animals, this is the perfect place for you. Lazy traveler's itinerary First stop Take two cable car rides straight to the summit. The cable car is great for photos, so don't forget to snap some! Second stop China Tiger Pavilion + Tiger Cubs They are very close to each other. The cubs are so cute, and you can get right up to the glass to take photos. Third stop Go-karts are right next to the tiger cubs. A short walk away is the family park, which has all kinds of activities like space walks, jungle crossings, and trampoline nets. Fourth stop Monkey Park + high-altitude activities The 2,288-meter forest slide, the "Step by Step" bridge, and the high-altitude bicycles—if you aren't afraid of heights, I highly recommend all three. Last stop The 1,388-meter-high Ferris Wheel Platform. Reach the summit of this internet-famous high point! It features a glass skywalk and a 360° hilltop Ferris wheel. The park is huge, and there are electric carts connecting every station, making it a godsend for families traveling with kids. It's also perfect for dates or team-building events. Come stroll through the mountains and enjoy nature.

Revisiting Chuxi Tulou | Finally catching the gentlest early autumn in Western Fujian It's not my first time at Chuxi Tulou, but it is my first time visiting in early autumn. Every visit brings a different kind of excitement; summer is full of lush greenery and coolness, but the Tulou in early autumn is gentle to the core✨ · The city is still muggy and hot, unable to shake off the summer heat. But the moment I stepped into the mountains of Western Fujian, I completely switched modes. The mountain breeze has completely shed the heat, blowing cool and refreshing into every corridor of the Tulou. This is what autumn should look like! · Only on my second visit did I understand that autumn in Chuxi is hidden in the small details of daily life. Haystacks stand quietly in the square, and the harvest corridor is hung with strings of grains, swaying gently in the breeze, bringing its own healing filter. The stream in the valley has become cool, the plants on the banks are slowly tinged with a faint autumn yellow, and the layers of the mountains instantly become gentle. · My favorite thing is to stroll through the corridors of Jiqing Building, where rows of winnowing baskets are filled with autumn harvest crops. Rice and dried goods are quietly drying, rustling in the wind, mixed with the sweet scent of wild plants and ripe persimmons, rushing towards me. No need to look at a calendar; the autumn harvest drying scenery of the Tulou is the most authentic confession of autumn. · Wandering through the ancient Tulou cluster, the autumn wind passes through century-old doorways and mottled earthen walls, simple and quiet. There is no commercial noise here, only slow mountain time and the simple, rustic life of the village. · Every time I feel upset or want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, I want to come to Chuxi to zone out. Finding a spot by the window to stand quietly, letting the early autumn breeze brush against my cheeks, watching the light and shadow fall on the earthen walls and grains, it's gentle and healing. · Still falling for it on my second visit! A top choice for niche travel in Fujian in early autumn. Come to Chuxi Tulou to catch the unique autumn romance of the Western Fujian mountains🍃 ·

Fujian Tulou intangible cultural heritage performances: a dream back to "Big Fish & Begonia" — traveler post in Longyan

Fujian Tulou intangible cultural heritage performances: a dream back to "Big Fish & Begonia"

You can't visit Fujian without seeing the Tulou. Every time I visit, I'm amazed by the wisdom of the ancients. Each visit feels like stepping back into the world of "Big Fish & Begonia." This National Day, Wangzi Tulou is extra lively. The combination of Tulou and intangible cultural heritage performances offers a vivid way to experience Hakka culture, making it perfect for a family trip. ⭐ Recommended performances ⭐ Stilt-walking welcome performance 📍 New Archway, Fujian Tulou Wangzi Scenic Area Visitor Center This is my favorite. Lively performers in traditional costumes walk on stilts and perform interactive dances. It's fun and festive, and you can even take photos with the NPCs. ☂ Tulou Fantasy 📍 Ticket checking area, Fujian Tulou Wangzi Visitor Center A visual and auditory feast where magicians take you into a mysterious world. There's also interactive fun on-site. ⛱ High-pole tumbler performance "Flying to the Moon" A Chang'e fairy in the sky. It was my first time seeing a high-pole tumbler performance, and it was so stunning. She really looked like a fairy from a storybook. Chinese-style clown peddler "Laughter in the Tulou" A cute clown pushing a cart full of childhood gifts. The interaction is lively, and both adults and children will love it. There are even surprise gifts. Balancing act "Tulou Dreams" It's amazing to see such a stunning performance inside a Tulou. The performer balances layers of stacked stools with their body—a display of strength and aesthetics. 🪇 Intangible cultural heritage acrobatics "Bamboo Rhythm and Spinning Plates" A young performer balances spinning plates on thin bamboo sticks at high speed. It's like being there in person for a performance you'd usually only see on the Spring Festival Gala. Come here for the National Day holiday to photograph the Tulou, stroll by the bridges and flowing water, and watch these spectacular performances. You'll leave with wonderful memories. 🎫 Tips During the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday (Oct 1–Oct 7), there are various performances every day from 10:00 AM–8:30 PM for an immersive travel experience

Rainy days are beautiful too | Unlock the misty autumn harvest at Chuxi Tulou — traveler post in Longyan

Rainy days are beautiful too | Unlock the misty autumn harvest at Chuxi Tulou

Many people worry that they won't be able to see the autumn harvest displays on rainy days, but in fact, the autumn harvest at Chuxi Tulou on a rainy day has a unique atmosphere. Drizzle shrouds the mountains, clouds and mist wrap around the tulou, and the rammed earth walls of the tulou are moistened by the rain, taking on a deep, rich color. The winnowing baskets of crops along the circular corridors of Jiqing Building carry a damp mist, their colors highly saturated, making the circular autumn harvest display in the misty rain full of poetic charm. The hay bale installations and the harvest corridor at Chuxi Square are filled with a hazy, atmospheric vibe in the drizzle; the water level in the Suoxi Valley rises, the stream murmurs, and the bamboo racks for drying crops over the water are shrouded in mist, creating a cool and beautiful scene. When traveling on a rainy day, be sure to bring rain gear and wear non-slip shoes. There are fewer tourists, so you can wander quietly between the tulou. Without direct, harsh sunlight, portraits naturally have a soft filter effect. On sunny days, the autumn harvest at Chuxi Tulou is vibrant and bright; on rainy days, it is gentle and misty. Don't be discouraged if you encounter rainy weather; come and experience the unique, cozy atmosphere of Chuxi Tulou shrouded in misty rain.

Fujian Tulou Yongding Scenic Area

These are very distinctive Hakka residences, quite large. Historically, they were large, round or square earthen buildings where Hakka people, migrating from the north, lived together as family units. They are architecturally unique, taking into account functions such as water access and defense, and represent traditional architectural culture. Worth seeing.

Fujian Tulou King Area

Due to time constraints, we could only choose one Tulou (Hakka earthen building), so we chose the King of Tulou 😄. There weren't many tourists, and the whole tour with the guide took less than 2 hours, making it very friendly to elderly people and children!

Guanzhai Mountain National Scenic Spot

This is my second time here. The first time I went on Route A, which was only a 4A scenic area at the time. This time it has been upgraded to 5A, so we went on the longest route, Route B. Our group spent about 4 hours on the whole trip. The scenery was beautiful, and although it was tiring, it was worth it.

The ancient town of Changting

Wolong Academy, founded during the Shaoding era of the Southern Song Dynasty, is located at the southern foot of Wolong Mountain. It is the oldest academy in the eight counties of Tingzhou and the highest institution of learning in western Fujian. Song Dynasty Neo-Confucian philosopher Zhu Xi and Ming Dynasty scholar Wang Yangming both lectured and taught here, nurturing the cultural heritage of Tingzhou. Over 300 scholars from the area have passed the imperial examinations here throughout history. The academy is conveniently located on the west side of Xinmin Street in the ancient city of Changting, a 5-minute walk from Sanyuan Pavilion. The grounds feature pavilions and towers, as well as introductions to the academy and Neo-Confucianism, offering both fun and educational opportunities, making it ideal for family visits. Walking out of the academy towards the river leads to Jichuan Gate, the most bustling area of the ancient city of Tingzhou.

Chuxi Tulou cluster

We visited Chuxi Tulou (初溪土楼) on a day trip after exploring Tianluokeng Tulou, and it was a nice experience overall. The traditional Hakka buildings and mountain scenery are beautiful, and the 晒秋 displays are especially attractive for taking photos. However, some areas feel a bit too commercial, which takes away a little from the original village atmosphere. Still, it’s worth visiting if you enjoy photography and want to capture some beautiful traditional Fujian scenery.

Fujian Tulou Prince Scenic Area

The Hakka Tulou (earthen buildings) are very distinctive. The Prince Scenic Area blends seamlessly with the ancient village, creating a unique atmosphere. The Tulou King Scenic Area is relatively small and can be seen quickly; the Tulou itself is filled with shops selling local specialties. Visitors can only tour the first floor of the Tulou; going upstairs is not permitted.

Wolong Academy

Several scenic spots seem to be carefully built by the local cultural tourism. They are clean and sanitary, and the environment decoration is as beautiful as possible, which is refreshing. However, the traces of the ancient buildings are very heavy, and everything looks very new, lacking the ancient charm. Another fatal point is that the content is too thin and too little. It is not worth visiting specifically, but you can come and see it on the way.

Peitian Ancient Village

This is a fantastic ancient village; the ancient architecture is amazing. However, it needs more development in both its infrastructure and services. With such excellent resources, I suggest finding a professional tourism company to manage it—look at how Wuzhen manages it!

Yongfu Taipin Cherry Blossom Tea Plantation

It's definitely worth a visit. The lush green tea gardens and pink cherry blossoms complement each other beautifully, and there are red, blue, and pink trains running through the park, creating a strong spring atmosphere. The only downside is that there are no places to buy bottled water along the way.

Longyan Forest Water Village Scenic Area

It was fun, and the two kids had a great time. There were rides, interactive animal activities, and beautiful scenery to explore. You could easily spend a whole day there. We didn't go rafting because it was too cool, but we plan to come back next summer.
