Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

If you've ever felt fascinated by the tall sandstone pillars you've always seen while searching for China tourist destinations, this is where they are - Zhangjiajie. Zhangjiajie is China's first national forest park. It is in Wulingyuan District, Zhangjiajie City (Hunan Province) and an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park features 3,000+ sandstone pillars formed over 380 million years ago! Surprisingly, the entire region was once an ocean. But over time, tectonic shifts lifted the seabed and further, wind and rain carved it into the spires we see today.

However, it isn't merely the pillars that fascinate people. Zhanjiajie has much more to offer, including its unique wildlife (Rhesus monkeys, Chinese giant salamanders, and 140+ bird species) and ~3,000+ plant species, including rare ones such as Zhangjiajie pine.

The most iconic pillar among others across the park is the 1,074-meter tall Southern Sky Column.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park - Opening Hours

  • Park Main Hours: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM (latest entry at 5:00 PM)
  • Tianzi Mountain Cableway: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM (April–October). 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM (November–March)

Tianmen Mountain

Tianmen Mountain

Note: AI-generated image. Only for reference.

Tianmen Mountain is next to Zhangjiajie City. You can reach the summit by either cable car or scenic bus.

The most popular route is the Tianmen Mountain Cableway. It runs from the city center up to the mountain top. That makes it one of the longest cable cars in the world. The city views become more spectacular as you move upward, closer to the summit.

Yet another route is the scenic bus. It climbs the mountain via the 99-bend mountain road. The bus stops near Heaven's Gate (Tianmen Cave) before moving upward.

Once you reach the top, you will find a circular walkway system that connects the cliff-edge glass walkways, forest paths and viewing platforms.

Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge

Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge

Note: AI-generated image. Only for reference.

The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon is a deep mountain gorge in the Sanguan Township of Cili County, Hunan Province. The canyon covers an area of 15 square kilometers and is situated at around 22 kilometers east of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area.

Grand Canyon is popular for its natural attractions, sheer cliffs, wooded slopes, clear streams and the glass bridge.

As for the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, it is a 430-meter bridge across the gorge and hangs at a whopping 300 meters.

The best time to visit the canyon is:

  • Spring (March to May): Fresh greenery, short mountain showers, and mist.
  • Summer (June to August): Hot, humid and busy with temperatures at 32-33 degrees celsius.
  • Autumn (September to November): The finest time to visit with temperatures between 15 and 23 degrees celsius.
  • Winter (December to February): Occasional snow with temperatures ranging between 2 and 12 degrees celsius.

It's easy to get there by Didi. Very beautiful, although we had to wait in line for an hour and a half to go down the zip line. We bought the 5-attraction pass (out of 7), but we didn't quite understand how to redeem all five because they didn't seem compatible. We used the virtual reality movie, the zip line, and the water slide. The paid boat ride is pointless because it's only 200 meters long, and we didn't take it because we wanted to enjoy the views. So I recommend booking three activities; you save money and have a complete experience.

  • Zhangjiajie City: The city is best for arrivals, departures and convenience. It is close to the Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport, train stations and local restaurants. Staying at Wotianju this trip was a delightful surprise! It's incredibly close to all the attractions, basically within ten minutes. We drove there ourselves, and the hotel itself is unbelievably huge – you even need to drive to get around inside! The front desk also gave us a free room upgrade, which made us really not want to leave. The hotel pays attention to details everywhere: the butler service is super responsive and on-call, the welcome fruit was chilled, and even a simple blanched lettuce at the Chinese restaurant was delicious. You can tell the chef really knows their stuff – it was fresh and not greasy. You could easily just stay at the hotel for all your eating, drinking, and entertainment needs. There's a huge lawn, and reading a book and having tea by the river under the trees was just incredibly relaxing; time just seemed to slow down. After dinner, we'd go swimming and then soak in the hot springs. Honestly, even though it's an outdoor hot spring, the cleanliness was excellent. Back where we're from, a hot spring of this quality for two people would cost about the same as a night's stay! I forgot my facial cleanser when we left, and the butler even arranged for SF Express to send it home – absolutely perfect! You can tell the owner put a lot of effort into the hotel's construction, design, and staff management. I would definitely come back to Zhangjiajie just for this hotel again. A hundred points!

Traveling with family, the overall experience was a pleasant surprise, deserving a full five-star rating. The room layout was well-designed, and the cleanliness was impeccable. The bathroom facilities were convenient to use. The staff were friendly and approachable, and the butler service was excellent, making communication smooth for any requests. The breakfast buffet offered a wide variety of options, catering to everyone in the family. The hotel environment was peaceful, and the common areas were tidy and elegant. The location was great, not far from tourist attractions, and convenient for dining out. Our room faced the river, offering beautiful views at night. From cleanliness to dining and service, everything was top-notch. Our family had a comfortable stay, and it's definitely worth recommending.

We had a fantastic stay at Forest Homestay at Sunrise and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The room was spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean, with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Waking up to the scenery each morning was a real highlight of our stay. The food in the restaurant was excellent. We ate there multiple times and everything we ordered was fresh, delicious and very reasonably priced. It was a lovely place to relax after a long day exploring the park. What really made our stay exceptional, however, was the staff. They were incredibly kind, patient and helpful from start to finish. Before we arrived, they helped organise our transfers to and from the hotel, making the journey completely stress-free. They also took the time to plan our itinerary for Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, explaining the different routes and helping us make the most of our time there. Thanks to their advice, we managed to avoid the long queues and see all of the major highlights efficiently, making our visit far more enjoyable. The genuine warmth and hospitality of everyone at the hotel made us feel very welcome. We would happily stay here again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone visiting Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.

I chose this hotel because of its location to the Tianmen Mountain cableway and shuttle buses. In this respect, it’s fantastic. With the cableway, Route A and Route B to Tianmen now closed for renovation and upgrades, you can still walk down to the free shuttle bus area which is about 100m down the street. In regard to the hotel, it’s clean and comfortable although it’s definitely showing its age now with dated carpets and furnishings. The towels are also getting a bit threadbare and thin. That said, the staff are lovely, the breakfast buffet is great and location works really well for getting to Tianmen mountain.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An amazing stay in Zhangjiajie We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Manyuan Resort. From the moment we arrived, the entire team was incredibly kind, welcoming, and always willing to help us with anything we needed. The resort itself is beautiful, extremely clean, peaceful, and very comfortable. Everything is well maintained, and the atmosphere makes you feel at home. Their hospitality really made a difference during our stay. They also offer tea and food, which we really enjoyed, and everything was excellent. The location is another huge advantage. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is only about a 10-minute walk away, making it very convenient for exploring the area. It is also close to the bridge area, where you can enjoy the beautiful drone, light, and waterfall shows at night, which was a great experience. What we appreciated most was how genuinely friendly and attentive everyone was. After long days exploring Zhangjiajie, coming back to Manyuan felt relaxing and comfortable. We are extremely grateful to the entire team for making our stay so enjoyable. If I ever return to Zhangjiajie, I would not hesitate for a second to stay at Manyuan Resort again. I really enjoyed my stay at Yuxi Homestay. The location is great, quiet and peaceful, and my room was very comfortable with a lovely view, just like in the photo. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful throughout my stay. Their English is limited, but this was never really an issue as we used a translator when needed. They always made an effort to answer my questions, give me useful tips and make sure I knew how to get around. One of the best things was how well they helped organise my visits to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The routes were explained clearly and in detail, with maps and helpful suggestions. A member of staff also drove me to the attractions and picked me up afterwards, which made everything so much easier. Breakfast was served at Anting Holiday Hotel, just across from Yuxi Homestay. There was a good variety of food every day and plenty of different options to choose from. The owner was also very friendly and welcoming. Overall, I had a very pleasant stay. If I come back to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, I would consider staying at Yuxi Homestay or Anting Holiday Hotel again.

Our three-night stay at No. 5 Valley Lodge (August 23-26) was absolutely outstanding. From start to finish, every aspect of the experience exceeded our expectations. The location is stunning and perfectly positioned for exploring the surrounding natural beauty. The staff's availability and attentiveness were remarkable—they genuinely anticipate your needs without being intrusive. A special touch: the team handles your luggage with care, and refreshingly, no one pressures you for tips. This level of genuine hospitality is rare. What truly impressed us was the quality of information and services provided at the reception desk. Recommendations for excursions were accurate and well-planned, with clear schedules and logistics that made our outdoor activities seamless and enjoyable. The hiking program and activity options were expertly organized at an excellent level. The staff's kindness and professionalism created a welcoming atmosphere throughout our stay. Every interaction reflected genuine care for guest comfort. **Minor Suggestion:** The pillows, while of decent quality, are slightly too high for optimal comfort. My partner and I both found them a bit firm for our preferences. I would suggest offering at least one orthopedic or lower-profile pillow option among the bedding selections. This small adjustment would make the sleeping experience truly perfect for all guests. Overall, No. 5 Valley Lodge is an exceptional destination that delivers on all fronts. We would absolutely recommend it and look forward to returning.

Staying a night at Zhangjiajie Dayong Secluded Haven was the biggest pleasant surprise of my entire trip to Zhangjiajie. Tucked away on the hillside of Baofeng Mountain, this guesthouse truly lives up to its name as a secluded mountain retreat, occupying its own valley, completely free from the hustle and bustle of traffic and crowds. The overall design is rustic and natural, with the architecture seamlessly blending into the mountain landscape, devoid of any overly commercialized, deliberate embellishments. The owner, a designer who returned from Shanghai, runs the guesthouse with a relaxed and laid-back aesthetic, not driven by a commercial mindset. Every corner reveals subtle artistic touches, and the entire place exudes a strong personal warmth. I had a long, in-depth conversation with the owner late into the night about spatial design and the philosophy behind creating a mountain retreat. It offered profound insights that went far beyond a typical accommodation experience. The guest rooms boast large open-air viewing balconies that open up to an endless expanse of the Wuling Mountains, offering direct, breathtaking panoramic views of Tianzi Mountain. The room was quiet and healing, and the tranquil mountain atmosphere allowed me to completely shed the tension of city life. It truly is a rare therapeutic space where one can find emotional solace. The meals are authentic Tujia local flavors. I highly recommend the bamboo shoot stew with cured pork. The cured pork was generous in portion and quality, with a pure and genuine smoky flavor. All ingredients tasted as if they were fresh from the mountains. The owner even gifted us a few extra local home-style dishes, which perfectly suited our taste – simple yet thoughtfully prepared. At 6:30 AM, I set off from the guesthouse to hike up to the Baofeng Mountain temple. The empty mountain was serene, allowing me to slowly experience inner cultivation and a state of mind free from external pursuits. The spiritual gains from this mountain retreat far surpassed the beauty of the scenery itself. In Zhangjiajie, where formulaic, 'influencer-style' guesthouses are ubiquitous, Dayong Secluded Haven is one of the very few that stays true to its essence, offering a top-tier experience with both aesthetic appeal and genuine warmth. It's not just a place to stay; it's more like a spiritual sanctuary nestled in the mountains, a refuge from worldly noise that truly allows you to quiet your mind and converse with yourself. This trip was truly unforgettable, and I will definitely return.

Our stay was beyond beautiful! I stayed here with my partner and we are still dreaming about it. The views are absolutely incredible, but the design of the room is what really impressed us. It was incredible, it was clean, perfect mix between modern and a match with the landscape. It’s very private with no one having a view to the room — we were in the upper floor. Great location, only a few min drive to the South Gate to start a full day in Zhangjiajie. I want to add a special thank you to the host for his kindness and attentive instructions on how to visit the park depending on our preferences. He gave us a map and explained everything we could see and what route to follow with realistic time estimations, and on top of that, he drove us to the entrance of the park. I cannot recommend this more. Very friendly and helpful. We had a little external problem and they helped us fix it. The room was a little bit better in the pictures. We did our laundry there but our clothes came out not so clean. The breakfast wasn’t great but the fresh noodles served were good and the guy was friendly. Did not use the pool because of the weather. A lot of restaurants nearby but if you’re looking for the Xibu Foodstreet: it doesn’t exist! It was quite far from the main entrance to do by foot so you needed a Didi, but there weren’t a lot of Didi’s and you needed to wait a loong time!

The location is top-notch, just a 5-minute walk to the scenic area. It’s got to be the closest hotel to the East Gate, which is a lifesaver for anyone climbing the mountain with elderly family members. There are plenty of dining options nearby, offering all sorts of local delicacies. The front desk is prompt and efficient, and they even provide free trekking poles for guests to borrow. The room features smart lighting, a smart toilet, and smart curtains. Offering incredible value for money, this place is an absolute no-brainer.

Pros: - Clean rooms - Daily refill of bottled water (can find more by the elevators and the gym) - free laundry service, there is a staff that will wash, dry, fold, and deliver your clean clothes to your room (so helpful when I fell asleep after an exhausting day trip), just make sure you fill out the paper slip - reception staff offered tea immediately during check-in - when we had trouble with our card losing access prior to check out, they helped resolve it - Good variety for the breakfast buffet, the Chinese hot foods rotate so you don’t get bored - When we wanted breakfast during 0700-0800, a tour group was occurring that time so all the tables were full, they suggested we wait til after 0800. Was slightly inconvenient for me since I booked my entrance ticket for Tianmenshan for 0800-1000. I had to adjust my itinerary slightly since I already paid for the breakfast, but they offered free breakfast for the following day due to the inconvenience which was nice. Cons: - Could use better sound proofing, may be worse if your room was located by high traffic areas. I was at the very end of the hall so it was manageable for me. - All linens come individually wrapped in plastic, nice to know they are clean but seems a little non-eco friendly.

As a solo female traveler from Canada, my stay here was truly one of the most heartwarming parts of my trip. ❤️ Everyone was so kind and thoughtful, from providing me with a detailed map and explaining the best routes to taking me to and from the park each day. I looked forward to the delicious breakfast every morning before starting my adventures, and even more so to returning to the resort each evening, enjoying a meal, and catching up with everyone. They always took the time to ask how my day went and check in on me, making me feel genuinely cared for. Being so far away from home can sometimes feel lonely, but their warmth and hospitality gave me a sense of home thousands of miles away in Canada. These little gestures meant more than they know. Thank you for making my solo trip so special and for treating me like family. I will always remember my stay here and would wholeheartedly recommend this resort! ❤️

The service throughout our stay was attentive and thoughtful, making it a truly comfortable and relaxing experience for the whole family.

Excellent | Surprisingly Convenient and Peaceful This stay far exceeded my expectations! The hotel's location is truly unbeatable. I timed it myself: about 20 minutes to the high-speed rail station, 15 minutes to the airport, and only about 10 minutes to the bus/train station. Getting a ride was super easy, making it a true gem for business travelers or anyone needing to catch a train/flight. What was most surprising is that despite such a convenient location, the hotel's surroundings were exceptionally quiet, completely undisturbed by traffic noise. I slept incredibly soundly at night and could even hear birds chirping in the morning. The service was also very friendly. I highly recommend this hotel to travelers who value both convenient transportation and a peaceful environment for rest! I will definitely choose to stay here again next time.

This deluxe twin room was perfect for traveling with my two grandmothers! The two 1.5-meter wide beds were spacious and comfortable for the elderly. The panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows provided excellent natural light. The room was equipped with smart controls, a large TV, and wireless charging, all of which were easy for seniors to use. The entire room was clean and quiet, making for a very pleasant and restful stay. The hotel also conveniently provides invoices on-site, which is great for reimbursement. The overall service was thoughtful, making it highly recommended for those traveling with older family members! The service was warm and excellent.

Stayed for 3 days with my children. Highly recommend this place. Great attention to details. You are greeted with warm tea the moment you step into the hotel. The receptionists are very welcoming. The lobby offers free coffee, playground for kids, nice reading areas with fully stacked bookshelves including nice selection of Chinese books incluiding history of Zhang Jia Jie. It also has a nice gold fish pond, chess, Go and Chinese Xiang Qi tables. What’s best for travelers like us who’s been out for a while is that they provide FREE washer and dryer! The room has Two Types of Slippers, one massage slipper for shower and one fabric for walking around, which I have never seen! And, it has Remote Controlled Curtains and AI enabled TV! In addition to central air, it also has an air purifier! Breakfast also has wide varieties including on demand noodles, rice noodles, all sorts of Chinese dishes and western salad and pastry. This place has definitely exceeded my expectations in so many areas! We had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend to friends and families!

Traveling with friends, I didn't have high expectations for our accommodation, but this hotel really exceeded them! The facilities are pretty comprehensive, and the room was clean and tidy, so I slept very comfortably. The breakfast offered a good variety and tasted great. They even knew we were tourists and recommended some sightseeing routes for us.

If you want a quiet place with exceptional service, this is the place to stay. We spent 5 nights here. They provide personalised trip planning, discount ticket booking for all attractions in the Zhangjiajie area, and a free shuttle to the South gate entrance. The shuttle is free back and forth (up to 3km one way) for any reason - dinners near the gate, for example. The breakfast is served to you and was delicious, they also accommodated my vegetarian requests. This is a small hotel - but with a homestay or B&B vibe. A lot of care and detail has been put into the design of the entire facility. There is an elevator. There is a natural spring with a dipper in the lower level - excellent drinking water! We refilled our water bottles there several times. Our room had the forest view with a terrace. It was great to have the extra space to relax in. This comes up as a Didi location, so it was easy to schedule our rides to and from the airport and train station. We took a Didi back from the east gate one day - so crazy there and noisy in that area! If you like huge hotels and a party atmosphere, stay there. Otherwise, choose the Qiquan.

Upon arrival, the doorman was very enthusiastic and helped with our luggage. We were also upgraded to an executive room during check-in. Since we were traveling with seniors and children, they thoughtfully arranged two rooms directly opposite each other. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The executive room had a small desk perfect for working, and a small balcony. There were shows nearby, as well as a commercial street with plenty of dining options. We were even lucky enough to catch a drone show at night. We had three nights of accommodation in Zhangjiajie, and I'm so glad we chose this hotel for all three days. Our itinerary for tomorrow hasn't started yet, but I hear it's very close to the East Gate of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, within walking distance! I've already recommended this hotel to friends coming for the National Day holiday. The scenery around the hotel is also incredible!

The room was clean and tidy, and the service was very thoughtful, making our stay feel secure and comfortable. The top choice for visiting Tianmenshan! The location is so convenient, yet the environment is quiet and great for resting. The staff were warm and polite, and the breakfast had a good variety. Great value for money—will definitely choose to stay here again next time!

This hotel is really satisfying. It is still very cost-effective compared to other hotels during the May Day holiday. There is a Fu Zhengyi restaurant downstairs, which is very convenient for eating. It is ranked first on Dianping.com. There is a breakfast shop opposite the hotel, which is very convenient for eating. Go straight down the street on the left side of the hotel to the riverside. It leads directly to the main gate of Dayong Ancient City. The street is very busy and there are many delicious foods. The sanitation of the hotel is also very good. It is not an old hotel and it has no smell. The room is also spacious enough for the price.

Fantastic, family run small hotel. The lovely couple that owns the place is super friendly. They checked us in early with no problem. Great value for money, the bed was extremely comfy and the pillows too. Honestly all you need from a hotel. And well communicated too, close to all amenities and only a short cab drive from the airport. Well recommended.
