What is the general layout and schedule of the Beijing Subway?

Beijing Metro Overview

I find the Beijing Subway to be one of the most comprehensive and punctual underground networks globally. It spans 27 operational lines and serves more than 500 stations, connecting the entire metropolitan area seamlessly. The general operating hours run daily from approximately 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Exact times for the first and last trains depend on your specific station and line.

Which Beijing subway lines and stations matter most to tourists?

While the network appears massive, I suggest prioritizing these specific lines that connect the main historical sites and transport hubs:

Beijing Metro Line 1 Route Map The Palace Museum
  • Line 1 (Batong Line): This line runs directly east to west through the center of the city. Key stops include Tiananmen West and Tiananmen East for the Forbidden City, as well as the terminal station for the Universal Resort.

Tiananmen Square is quite magnificent overall, but it's not a must-see. You can visit it before going to the Forbidden City. Chairman Mao can't be seen there, so you don't need to go specifically; just look at the exterior of the buildings. (Although I didn't go to the Forbidden City, if you want to go, remember to refresh the official website seven days in advance to get tickets. Don't be like me and only try to go when you arrive; you can't get tickets at all.)

Be prepared to wait in line for two hours in the heat if you're coming in the summer just to get in. Bring hats, umbrellas, sunscreen, electrolytes, food, and water! During security checks, they don't check if you've been in the sun for more than two hours, whether you're young or old.

It's a great park; if you go early, there aren't many people. You can buy tickets at the entrance, either just for the entrance or as a package that includes a visit to the temple. Be sure to go up there; the view is amazing.

The Old Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan) preserves the ruins of its past, a testament to foreign invasion. It's easy to imagine its former splendor and grandeur. The tour guide explained that the reason it's no longer restored is to ensure future generations remember the painful lessons of history—a truly regrettable situation.

I booked an entrance ticket and panda viewing for the morning. I arrived at 10:00 a.m., and there weren't many people, which was surprising. Thanks to the partial cloud cover, the sun wasn't scorching, and I could stroll freely through the park's vast grounds. The park itself is filled with various trees, so I could always find some shade. The enclosures themselves leave a lot to be desired, a bit dated, but the animals don't look tired or sick. There's always a place to buy water inexpensively on the grounds. Of course, if you've visited the Moscow Zoo, you won't be impressed by the Beijing Zoo. But overall, it's worth a visit for comparison. The animals are full by noon and go to sleep.

  • Line 8: Running vertically down the center of the city, it brings you straight to the Olympic Green (Bird's Nest and Water Cube), Nanluoguxiang (historical hutongs), and Shichahai.
  • Airport Express Lines: The Capital Airport Express links Capital Airport to Dongzhimen and Beixinqiao. The Daxing Airport Express links Daxing International Airport to Caoqiao station.

How to Buy Beijing Subway Tickets? Payment Methods Explained

I can confirm that the system offers highly modern methods for international travelers to pay for their journeys.

1. Contactless Bank Cards (The Easiest Method)

You do not need to buy a physical ticket in advance. You can simply tap your overseas-issued physical bank card or phone wallet over the sensor at the turnstile gate. The system supports the five main international networks:

  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • American Express
  • JCB
  • China UnionPay
Beijing Metro Map: How to Use Alipay to Take Beijing Metro?

2. Smartphone Applications and QR Codes

If you prefer using your phone, you can set up a dynamic ride code:

  • Alipay or WeChat Pay: You link your international bank card to your account, verify your identity with your passport details, and locate the Transport (出行) mini-program within the app.
  • Beijing Yikatong (北京一卡通) Application: This is the city's official transit application. Please note that one mobile phone number can only link to one Yikatong account.

3. Vending Machines and Station Service Counters

If you want to use cash, you can look for the automated Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs). They offer an English language selection. You must input your passport number to buy a single-use token. These machines take paper bills but are often restricted to exact change or specific denominations. Alternatively, you can talk to a staff member at the glass customer service desk next to the security lane to buy a token or purchase a physical, reloadable Yikatong Card.

How to Ride, Navigate, and Transfer at Beijing Subway

I recommend following this process from the moment you plan your trip until you leave the destination station:

How to Ride, Navigate, and Transfer at Beijing Subway

Step 1: Digital Route Planning

Open Gaode Maps (Amap) and enter your destination. The app will generate several transit options. The topmost route provides the fastest journey time. I strongly recommend taking a screenshot of this route before you go underground. If your phone experiences a loss of cellular data deep inside the tunnels, you will still have a visual reference.

How to Ride, Navigate, and Transfer at Beijing Subway

Sry I use Shanghai metro route for instance here, Beijing is the same!

Step 2: Security Screening

Every station entrance requires a mandatory safety check. Place your backpacks, purses, and luggage onto the conveyor belt for X-ray scanning, then step through the metal detector.

How to Ride, Navigate, and Transfer at Beijing Subway

Step 3: Entering the Gates

Walk up to the turnstiles and scan your app QR code, tap your physical Yikatong card, or tap your international credit card against the illuminated sensor.

How to Ride, Navigate, and Transfer at Beijing Subway

Step 4: Tracking Your Train Direction

After entering, look at your Gaode Maps app to see the terminal direction (终点站) of the train you need. Follow the overhead hanging signs toward the platforms. If you need a Line 1 train heading to the Universal Resort, the sign will show you which side of the platform to stand on. Most stations share a central platform where left and right simply separate the two opposite directions. However, a few older or complex multi-line intersections use split corridors or completely different floors for opposite directions. Always look at the directional arrows on the signs before walking down a staircase.

How to Ride, Navigate, and Transfer at Beijing Subway

Step 5: Inside-Station Transfers

If your journey requires changing lines, do not exit through the turnstiles. Walk off the train and look for the colored transfer paths marked on the station pillars, floors, or ceilings. Follow the signs matching the color and number of your next line, and walk through the connecting pedestrian tunnels directly to the new platform.

Step 6: Exiting the Train

Listen to the audio announcements inside the train car, which play in both Mandarin and English. You can also watch the digital map strip above the doors; a flashing light indicates the next stop. When you arrive, step off the train, follow the indicators to your chosen exit letter (Exits A, B, C, or D), and tap your card or code at the turnstile to exit.

ℹ️ Note on Assistance: If you get turned around, please ask any of the security guards or station attendants on duty. Even if language barriers exist, they are instructed to help and will point you in the correct direction.

The room was clean and housekeeping was prompt. I also got a late check-out. There were quite a few foreigners staying at the hotel, and all the rooms had a European style. The only thing was, I had to remind the staff at check-in about the room upgrade that was clearly stated on my Ctrip booking before they actually gave it to me. It would be better if they proactively checked the order for upgrades next time.

I stayed at the Sofitel Beijing with my child during the holidays. I chose it mainly for its excellent location – it's super convenient, only a 5-10 minute walk to the subway station. However, since the hotel opened in 2014, the room facilities are definitely showing their age. There were cracks in the walls and the leather headboard was damaged. The hardware is clearly a bit outdated. On the positive side, the service was excellent; from the concierge to the front desk, and even the dining and room service staff, everyone was very warm and attentive. Plus, I could use my Ctrip points to directly offset the room rate, which made it even better value for money, so I ultimately decided to go with this hotel. After all, you get what you pay for, and it's normal to have to compromise a little.

1. **Unbeatable Location:** Situated at No. 36 Xiaoyun Road in Chaoyang District, right in the heart of the Third Embassy Area, just a 3-minute walk to the US Embassy. It's also close to Liangmaqiao/Sanyuanqiao subway stations (approx. 900 meters) and offers easy access to Sanlitun, Solana, and the airport expressway. 2. **Excellent Service Reputation:** The front desk staff are professional and responsive, handling requests like turndown service, deliveries, and room changes with great care. Following Air China's service standards, cleanliness rates 4.7/5 and service 4.7/5. 3. **Spacious and Comfortable Rooms:** Starting from 40 sqm, rooms are well-designed with comfortable bedding and excellent soundproofing. Bathrooms are large, feature separate wet and dry areas, include a bathtub, and have ample hot water. 4. **Comprehensive Facilities:** Enjoy a complimentary indoor swimming pool and gym, free parking, and a lobby lounge/coffee shop/tea room, making it ideal for both business and leisure travelers. 5. **Abundant Breakfast:** A rich buffet with both Chinese and Western options. Window seats offer great views, and the breakfast is considered high value for money. 6. **Great Value for Money:** Offers 5-star amenities at a lower price point compared to other 5-star hotels in the same area.

We stayed at this hotel in Beijing for 6 nights, and it offers a fantastic view of Beijing's new landmarks: the China Zun and the 'Big Trousers' (CCTV Headquarters). Sitting by the window, sipping tea, and watching the landmarks change color from white to yellow, then pink, and then blue was incredibly relaxing! The best part is that the subway entrance (Lines 2 and 5) is right outside the hotel, making it incredibly convenient to get to almost every attraction. Super convenient!

Pros: excellent location next to Wangfujing. Opposite is 7-11 and some food stalls so not to worry if you need food late at night. Hotel allows storage of bags when we go out for short trip and collection of parcels. They helped to liaise with courier on collection of the package which we appreciate given we have no China number. Pillow selections are available if you prefer harder pillow. Cons: hotel quite dated and old. The air dryer is old school dryer and can be replace with a better & faster version. Shower side has no door so water splash out to the sink area. The location is unbeatable! It's just a few minutes' walk to Wangfujing, and you can stroll to Tiananmen and the Forbidden City. There's a subway station right across the street, making it super convenient to get around. The room was spotless. The mattress was just right – not too soft, not too firm – and the soundproofing was good. The bathroom had a separate wet and dry area, and the shower had great water pressure and hot water. I really liked the scent of the toiletries too. Breakfast was delicious, with stir-fries, baozi (steamed buns), and zhajiangmian (noodles with fried sauce) – very satisfying. All the staff were lovely. When I checked in, they proactively told me the quickest way to get to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen. This stay exceeded my expectations! The location is fantastic – shopping areas and attractions are all within walking distance, making transportation a breeze and saving a lot of hassle. The biggest surprise was the hotel's intangible cultural heritage experience program. The instructor was very detailed in their explanation, and the hands-on creation of traditional crafts felt incredibly ceremonial. It was both relaxing and a great way to experience local culture, suitable for both adults and children. The accompanying gym is also worth mentioning; the space is clean and well-ventilated, equipped with a full range of cardio and strength training machines. While there was an initial misunderstanding due to a hygiene concern which caused distress on our first night stay that I had to escalate the matter through Trip.com, the hotel manager turned the experience around. The night before check-out, we had a genuine and positive conversation at the lobby. She was humble and openly acknowledged her shortcomings and appreciated for helping her learn and grow as a leader. Good to know that a manager willing to take accountability and desire to improve. Every hotel staff we have interacted with are professional and friendly. Aside from the good service recovery, we loved the hotel's convenience: 1. We booked a family room and arrived at 11 AM. I thought I'd try asking if we could check in early, and to my pleasant surprise, the gentleman at the front desk enthusiastically arranged it for us. Many thanks! 🙏 Facilities: The family room was fully equipped, with two double beds, a kitchen, and a dining area – all complete. However, the overall feel of the room leaned more towards a guesthouse. (Though I'm not sure why the TV wasn't facing the beds?) The rooftop pool, while not large, offered stunning views and had a lifeguard, so I felt comfortable letting my child swim independently. Environment: The hotel's location is convenient, about a 10-minute walk from both Jianguomen and Chaoyangmen subway stations. There are many attractions nearby, like Ritan Park, and plenty of shopping centers. The hotel had a lot of international guests and was relatively quiet. Upon checkout, the lady at the front desk thoughtfully gave my child a small gift. I would definitely consider staying here again.

Our main reason for staying here again is that we had a great experience previously! This time, the room arranged for us was even more satisfying! According to the front desk manager, the hotel values returning guests and has renovated all family rooms. We had to check out early due to an unforeseen event, and the front desk manager said, 'No problem at all, we understand and will do our best to accommodate any of your needs. Mutianyu Great Wall/Xiangshuihu Great Wall area Beijing|59.45km from city centre
A truly great vacation isn't about an abundance of facilities, excessive service, or a high-brow experience. It's about that genuine sense of relaxation it gives you. During our two days at The Brickyard, we saw so many smiling faces. Everyone was happy, whether they were staying, dining, or just hanging out. You see glazed tile elements everywhere, and the design language in every corner, from the tile kilns, chimneys, and caves, to the flooring decorated with shattered glazed tiles. The former glazed tile factory has been reborn. There's no TV here, and while there's a gym, hot springs, spa, and nail salon, the facilities themselves fade into the background. Check-in, afternoon tea, breakfast, dinner, the rooms, the transportation – everything was perfect, just like coming home. It’s only 1 kilometer from Mutianyu Great Wall, and the hotel provided a private car transfer and even gifted us tickets. In the evenings there’s a bonfire, and in the afternoons, handicraft activities – absolutely no dull moments. The hotel is located in Bohai Town, nestled in a small mountain valley, with an abundance of negative oxygen ions and far from the noise of the 'Sleepless Valley.' All you hear are birds chirping, and you see the distant Great Wall and chestnut trees everywhere. Oh, and laughter, of course. Highly recommended, we'll definitely be back! Breakfast also deserves a mention. There was a rich variety of both Chinese and Western dishes, with plenty of options to choose from, making for a satisfying start to each day. The staff were consistently warm, polite, and attentive to every guest's needs. Their service was truly outstanding, deserving of high praise! I thoroughly enjoyed my stay these past few days and will definitely choose this hotel again on my next visit.

I really love the Kempinski Hotel! Even though it's not a new hotel, everything about it is solid and meets my expectations. Ms. Maggie at check-in was very polite and generous, which was commendable. The bread rolls at breakfast were just like the Brötchen I had in Germany – a thin, firm, and crispy crust with a soft interior, only missing the **crumbs** on top. Our family lives in Tianjin, and we'll definitely stay at the Kempinski again when we come back to Beijing.

Extremely satisfied! Though the room was small, it had everything we needed and was very well-maintained. The housekeeping staff did a thorough job cleaning. It was super convenient for traveling with kids, and they loved being able to play in the pool when we got back. Overall, very happy. Eva at the front desk was also incredibly thoughtful during our stay; she even reminded us that we could borrow umbrellas from the lobby if it rained. So considerate and professional! We'll definitely be back.

Since we had four generations of family together, we specifically chose an executive room. Besides the buffet breakfast at the lobby lounge on the first floor, we also enjoyed the executive lounge's afternoon tea and evening happy hour every day. We didn't even have to leave the hotel to enjoy its dining services, swimming pool, and other facilities, which was very warm and comfortable. Additionally, the hotel is located by the Liangma River, not far from Solana and Chaoyang Park, making it convenient for children to play.

I'd seen this hotel before but never had the chance to stay, so I finally got to experience it this time. The city view room had an absolutely stunning view, and with good weather, I could take tons of photos during the blue hour. Liu Shujun at the front desk handled my check-in quickly and professionally, and her service attitude was excellent~ (Take the escalator to the 3rd floor for check-in at the front desk, then the elevator to your room~) It was very quiet, with great soundproofing, so I could get a good night's sleep!

I booked a luxury king room for one night. Ctrip stated the room size was 40-45 square meters, but realistically, room 2129 felt more like 20 square meters at best. There's no way it was 40-45 square meters; I feel like I completely wasted over 1400 RMB. The bathroom didn't have a bathtub, only a shower and toilet. The sink area was also tiny, not even big enough to put a makeup bag on. For a room costing over 1400 RMB with breakfast included, it felt more like a 3 or 4-star hotel in the 400-600 RMB range the moment I walked in. My business partners have offices in this building, and international colleagues have stayed here before. This hotel is also on the pricier side compared to others in the area, so I thought it would be very upscale. I chose to stay here the night before an early meeting nearby, but the overall experience was quite poor. The room size and facilities are not comparable to other five-star hotels at all. Furthermore, the bar right next to the front desk on the first floor was incredibly noisy at night, like a street food stall, completely lacking the ambiance expected of a five-star hotel. I'm not sure what this hotel's positioning is. The air conditioning in the room was extremely loud, making it almost impossible to sleep with it on. The curtains also had very poor blackout, and I was woken up at 5 AM by the light leaking through. Moreover, when an international colleague stayed here, they mentioned the air conditioning might not have been cleaned, as they started coughing on the second day and were later diagnosed with a lung infection. I strongly recommend the hotel clean its air conditioning regularly and promptly, and provide accurate room information to avoid misleading consumers!

The environment was absolutely fantastic. The pool is, in my opinion, the best I've seen outside of the Peninsula Hotel Shanghai. The service was excellent; the staff were incredibly helpful and managed to make the impossible possible. I made an unreasonable request (my child wanted a lollipop), and they actually found one! It was an excellent stay.

The location is fantastic, with the subway just a few steps away, making it convenient to get anywhere. The hotel staff are all incredibly friendly and helpful. I'd seen some comments on Xiaohongshu about the rooms being a bit old, but after staying, I found them perfectly fine. The soundproofing is good, so it's quiet and peaceful, and the bedding is comfortable. There's even a turndown service with eight pillow options! I especially want to commend the room cleaning. I'd washed some clothes and was rushing out, so I just hung them in the bathroom. When I came back, they had delivered a clothes hanger and hung them up for me. P.S. My reservation included afternoon tea, and the young woman serving us was all smiles and absolutely charming. [Junjma Liujin · Shiguang Tea Duo Afternoon Tea Set (Valid for New Year)]

Last time I visited Universal Studios, I stayed at the Universal Studios Grand Hotel. This time, I opted for the NUO Resort Hotel. I initially thought it would be quite a distance from the park, but it's actually just a five-minute walk. It's incredibly convenient to pop back and rest whenever you get tired at the park. Though, it would be even better if they could offer a shuttle service in the future. I've stayed at NUO hotels in the city before, but this one, living up to its name, truly feels more like a resort. The extensive outdoor greenery really gives it a royal garden vibe. The room was very spacious, and the privacy was excellent. All the staff were very enthusiastic, especially Ethan Liu Hongyu and Ms. Wang Bing. I'll definitely prioritize staying at NUO again for my next trip to Universal.

The hotel facilities are complete and very convenient. We even got a room upgrade! The housekeeping staff were very thoughtful, and the front desk service was exceptionally attentive. The breakfast was a great mix of Chinese and Western options and very abundant. Plus, parking is free. The hotel is located right on Chang'an Avenue, and you can even see part of the street from your room. If you're traveling with family and need to choose a hotel carefully, I highly recommend the CITIC Hotel!

My child chose this hotel for their college entrance exam because of its proximity to Luhe High School. We were very satisfied with all aspects of the hotel's service throughout the exam period. The front desk staff were warm and attentive, even delivering takeout directly to our room. The cleaning staff were also very thoughtful. The hotel also offered a refrigerator for storing items, and ice was provided for cold drinks. The freshly ground coffee from the front desk was also very fragrant and refreshing. Most of the guests during the exam period were students and parents, and the environment was very quiet, which was conducive to students studying and resting.

I have to give this hotel a huge thumbs up! First off, the staff were incredibly warm and responsive, handling any request promptly and perfectly. The courtyard of the siheyuan is particularly charming and makes for great photos; the rooms, meanwhile, are clean, tidy, and well-designed, making for a very comfortable stay. My overall travel experience was definitely enhanced by this hotel, and I highly recommend it!
