1. Contactless Bank Cards (The Easiest Method)
You do not need to buy a physical ticket in advance. You can simply tap your overseas-issued physical bank card or phone wallet over the sensor at the turnstile gate. The system supports the five main international networks:
- Visa
- Mastercard
- American Express
- JCB
- China UnionPay
2. Smartphone Applications and QR Codes
If you prefer using your phone, you can set up a dynamic ride code:
- Alipay or WeChat Pay: You link your international bank card to your account, verify your identity with your passport details, and locate the Transport (出行) mini-program within the app.
- Beijing Yikatong (北京一卡通) Application: This is the city's official transit application. Please note that one mobile phone number can only link to one Yikatong account.

3. Vending Machines and Station Service Counters
If you want to use cash, you can look for the automated Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs). They offer an English language selection. You must input your passport number to buy a single-use token. These machines take paper bills but are often restricted to exact change or specific denominations. Alternatively, you can talk to a staff member at the glass customer service desk next to the security lane to buy a token or purchase a physical, reloadable Yikatong Card.
How to Ride, Navigate, and Transfer at Beijing Subway
I recommend following this process from the moment you plan your trip until you leave the destination station:
Step 1: Digital Route Planning
Open Gaode Maps (Amap) and enter your destination. The app will generate several transit options. The topmost route provides the fastest journey time. I strongly recommend taking a screenshot of this route before you go underground. If your phone experiences a loss of cellular data deep inside the tunnels, you will still have a visual reference.

Step 2: Security Screening
Every station entrance requires a mandatory safety check. Place your backpacks, purses, and luggage onto the conveyor belt for X-ray scanning, then step through the metal detector.
Step 3: Entering the Gates
Walk up to the turnstiles and scan your app QR code, tap your physical Yikatong card, or tap your international credit card against the illuminated sensor.
Step 4: Tracking Your Train Direction
After entering, look at your Gaode Maps app to see the terminal direction (终点站) of the train you need. Follow the overhead hanging signs toward the platforms. If you need a Line 1 train heading to the Universal Resort, the sign will show you which side of the platform to stand on. Most stations share a central platform where left and right simply separate the two opposite directions. However, a few older or complex multi-line intersections use split corridors or completely different floors for opposite directions. Always look at the directional arrows on the signs before walking down a staircase.
Step 5: Inside-Station Transfers
If your journey requires changing lines, do not exit through the turnstiles. Walk off the train and look for the colored transfer paths marked on the station pillars, floors, or ceilings. Follow the signs matching the color and number of your next line, and walk through the connecting pedestrian tunnels directly to the new platform.
Step 6: Exiting the Train
Listen to the audio announcements inside the train car, which play in both Mandarin and English. You can also watch the digital map strip above the doors; a flashing light indicates the next stop. When you arrive, step off the train, follow the indicators to your chosen exit letter (Exits A, B, C, or D), and tap your card or code at the turnstile to exit.
ℹ️ Note on Assistance: If you get turned around, please ask any of the security guards or station attendants on duty. Even if language barriers exist, they are instructed to help and will point you in the correct direction.
How much will I pay for Beijing Subway?
I have listed the distance-based fare structure below. The conversion rates reflect an approximate rate of 1 USD to 7.25 RMB.

This stay at the Sofitel Jian Guo Men left me with a great overall impression.
Before arriving, I communicated with the duty manager, Eli, letting him know it was our first stay and that it coincided with our anniversary. Upon check-in, he immediately upgraded us to an Executive Floor room and had it specially decorated. The attention to detail was exceptional, and we were incredibly impressed from the moment we arrived.
The first impression upon entering was excellent. The lobby had incredibly high ceilings and a grand, bright decor, completely avoiding the oppressive feeling you sometimes get in older hotels.
The layout of the Executive Room was also quite interesting; it wasn't just a generic square box. The space was well-utilized, making it feel much more spacious than I had imagined.
The service overall was hassle-free. Whether it was dealing with the front desk or requesting room service, any issues were addressed very quickly, with no need for back-and-forth.
In the evening, I specifically went to the bar on the basement level. The bartender, Pamper, was very amiable. She asked about my preferred tastes, and the cocktails she made were perfectly to my liking.

This is my second time staying here.
The biggest advantage is definitely the location.
It's only one subway station away from Beijing Railway Station, and also just one stop from Tiananmen Square.
It is truly so convenient.
Breakfast: There are a few issues. First, the steamed buns are not placed according to the food labels, which causes quite a bit of trouble for vegetarians and guests with halal dietary requirements. Second, the ice cream container was empty.
Third, spicy foods are not clearly labeled with warnings.
Fourth, there are no small spoons provided in the yogurt section.
Room facilities: The lighting is dim, and the setup on the second floor of the suite is too basic—there isn't even a small side table to put things on.
There are fewer seats in the lobby waiting area compared to last time.

The Forbidden City was within walking distance, although we preferred wearing masks outside because of the air quality. Getting to Universal Studios by taxi took us around 40–50 minutes.

The gym service was terrible. The last picture shows the very bad gym staff member who was playing on his phone in the changing room, a place where people are naked and where there are signs prohibiting phone use. When I tried to get his attention, he ignored me. This person also ignored guests at the front desk when checking in and out, not even greeting them. When I returned my wristband, he just kept his head down doing his own thing. It was a lady next to him who, seeing his lack of response, rather awkwardly took the wristband from me. Regular training should resolve this issue. Otherwise, it's a hotel with great value for money. The front desk staff was fantastic, patiently explaining various issues and even upgraded my room. The shuttle service uses Voyah commercial vans, which are super comfortable! The staff helped with our luggage, which was very thoughtful and attentive. It's about 10 kilometers from Badaling Great Wall, and Shuiguan Great Wall is nearby and not crowded. As for the dinner buffet, the crab was served in a very ”stingy” way. I'd suggest either setting a quota of one crab per person at the table, or simply taking it off the menu altogether. Only at most four people could grab some each time, while the rest of the guests couldn't even catch a glimpse of it. On top of that, it was only replenished almost once an hour.

Pros:
1. The hotel is nestled halfway up the mountain, offering fresh air and truly beautiful surroundings. It's a peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle, and the hotel's decor and maintenance are quite good. Our butler, Bella, was incredibly meticulous and thoughtful, taking care of every little detail. She met all our needs, making our stay exceptionally comfortable.
2. There's a wide array of facilities and activities, including a mountainside hot spring, indoor pool, Hatha yoga, singing bowl therapy, a gym, and a kids' club. It's perfect for families, and the kids' club is large and newly renovated – it just reopened in May. It's definitely more fun than the kids' clubs at other hotels I've visited. Plus, children aged 4 and up can be supervised for free, which made my little one super happy!
3. The room key card came with a park map, showing hiking trails. There's an easy 5-kilometer mountain boardwalk, perfect for families, where you can visit the Eight Planets viewing platforms.
4. The breakfast was impressive! They had steaks, lamb chops, and a rich variety of both Chinese and Western dishes. However, the cured meats were generally a bit too salty.
Cons:
1. For a 5-star hotel, there was no safe in the room.
2. While there's an abundance of kids' activities, most of them come with a fee.
3. Since the kids' club was newly renovated, the smell was quite strong, making my eyes and throat uncomfortable.

Overall, the experience was great! The staff were all very enthusiastic and the hygiene was excellent. There were plenty of bath towels and slippers. Today, before checking out, the crowd was significantly smaller, and my baby had a fantastic time in the children's pool.
There are a few areas I think could be improved:
* The breakfast could be a bit more varied.
* The cakes and desserts at LongRitz for dinner were a bit underwhelming. They tasted like they'd been defrosted for a long time, were very watery, and lacked flavor.
* It would be great if the children's pool could be expanded a bit. With the current facilities, a two-year-old gets bored after about an hour.

As someone who loves visiting hot springs around Beijing, I’ve discovered another hidden gem. The European-style architecture comes with high maintenance costs, but it is so much better kept compared to the Tianjin Evergrande Hotel Hot Spring that I used to frequent (which has since fallen into disrepair). The hotel offers great value for money, the buffet is worth the price, and the staff training is top-notch. I have to say, international hotel groups are just in a different league when it comes to personnel training! This five-star hotel truly delivers on luxury, providing an exceptional experience.
The location is a definite highlight – incredibly convenient for getting around. It's just a short walk to Metro Line 1 and Line 5, making transportation effortless. Step out of the hotel and turn left, and you'll find a shopping mall within 50 meters, offering a vast array of shopping and dining options that almost lead to decision paralysis, but certainly satisfy all your retail and food cravings.
The room itself was a wonderful surprise. It was incredibly spacious, bright, and filled with natural light. The floor-to-ceiling window offered an amazing view, making lounging and enjoying the scenery an absolute delight. The amenities were comprehensive, and the pillows and mattress were incredibly comfortable – I slept like a baby and woke up feeling completely refreshed.
Breakfast also deserves a mention. With a wide variety of both Chinese and Western options, there was so much to choose from, ensuring a satisfying start to each day.

The hotel's design and materials are from the 1990s, but it still feels very luxurious. The service across all departments was exceptional. This time, I traveled to Beijing with my 80-year-old parents. Given their advanced age—and the fact that my mother has limited mobility and uses a wheelchair—the Executive Suite was ideal. It’s quite spacious, making it easy for the wheelchair to maneuver. We requested a plastic shower chair in advance for my mother, and it was provided as requested. The room is equipped with a washing machine, microwave, refrigerator, and other amenities. When traveling with elderly family members, having these facilities is incredibly convenient; clothes can be washed immediately if they get soiled. The hotel is expansive, and navigating the hallways and elevators with a wheelchair was no problem at all. Breakfast is available at either the 2nd-floor or 17th-floor restaurant. The reception at the 2nd-floor restaurant wasn't very welcoming; without really checking, they simply told us there were no tables available before we were even seated. It was the same story the next day, but when we walked in to check ourselves, there were actually empty tables. While the 2nd-floor restaurant offers a wider variety of food, the service falls short compared to the 17th floor. Seeing the Sous Chef, Jerry Wang, greet us with a big, bright smile and a cheery 'Good Morning 😄' just makes you want to smile right back at them 😆.
The room was very clean. The housekeeping staff timed the daily room cleaning to match our outings. Whenever we needed extra supplies, calling guest services resulted in a prompt delivery.
As a suggestion for improvement, the entrance/exit leading to the B2 level of Beijing Oriental Plaza could really use a wheelchair ramp, or at least handrails on both sides of the stairs. That entrance leads directly to Wangfujing Street, which is extremely convenient, but unfortunately inaccessible for wheelchair users.

When we arrived at this hotel, I hadn't even realized it was the one I booked until we pulled in front of the lobby. It was so nice I was amazed that it was ours for what we paid. Incredibly stunning interior and exterior. The rooms and service live up to the standard as well. Absolutely perfect stay in the northeast corner of Beijing and I do believe we will come back to stay here next time. The attendants at the front desk were incredibly helpful, especially the one guy who helped me order on dianping and put together a porridge the Beijing way. The gym was the best I've ever seen in a hotel. Stacked with equipment for strength training with a separate room for martial arts training. My family and I chose Jen Hotel for a quick getaway during the November holiday. This is one of the most value-for-money hotels I've ever stayed in. This time, I booked a room with executive lounge access, which included breakfast, in-room breakfast delivery, and a two-person dinner at Sanwu Tang in the evening.
We had a smooth check-in around 5 PM. The front desk staff asked us which direction we preferred for our room, and we chose one facing the 'Big Trousers' building (CCTV Headquarters). During check-in, the front desk also helped us book a dinner reservation at Sanwu Tang. After dropping off our luggage, we headed straight for dinner.
Sanwu Tang is a buffet restaurant specializing in Beijing cuisine, offering a complete selection of local delicacies like 'baodu' (tripe), 'luzhu' (stewed offal), 'chaogan' (stir-fried liver), 'douzhi' (fermented mung bean juice), 'zhajiangmian' (fried sauce noodles), and roast duck. Of course, they also have international dishes like beef, lamb chops, and salmon sashimi. If you're a first-time visitor to Beijing and don't want to wander around the streets, you can try all these dishes in one place. Wang Yajuan, a server at the restaurant, thoughtfully explained the food stations and brought us the exclusive drinks menu for executive lounge guests, which we greatly appreciated. (Regular paying guests also have drinks, but the variety is much smaller than for executive lounge guests). This drink menu included four types of craft beer and Evian sparkling water, which instantly made the value for money skyrocket. Plus, the restaurant was filled with Beijing cultural elements, making for a very comfortable atmosphere.
The breakfast on the second day was also in the style of Beijing snacks, which I loved, so I won't go into detail.
By the way, the online reviews for Sanwu Tang aren't very high, but I think those low-score reviews are unfair. Because Sanwu Tang's main focus is Beijing flavors, both the style and the food are authentic Beijing local dishes. Objectively speaking, some dishes might not be well-received by non-locals, leading to low scores. But if you like these flavors, trust me, go for it with your eyes closed – you definitely won't be disappointed.
I also want to mention the gym; it's the largest I've seen in any hotel I've stayed at, with the widest variety of equipment. No luxury hotel in China can compare. The staff also maintained the high service standards of a premium hotel.
In summary, this is a hotel with exceptional value for money. It's located in Beijing's Guomao area, and both the service and hardware facilities are outstanding. Highly recommended! 👍FromPLN 711

Location: The hotel is in Chaoyang District, and since most of the places I wanted to visit in Beijing this time were nearby, it was quite convenient to get around.
Room Facilities: Although the hotel has been around for many years, it's an artistic hotel, and the more time passes, the more character it develops. Just like the artwork on the front desk's background wall says, 'The Rose of Time,' it made me think of Bei Dao's poem: 'When the brush draws the horizon, you are awakened by the gong of the East, and blooming in the echo is the rose of time…'
Breakfast: Breakfast is served on the first floor at LIQA, a Turkish restaurant. I'm not sure if it's the same team that handles breakfast and regular meal times, but the main courses, desserts, and drinks for breakfast were all excellent 👍.
Parking: To get from the parking lot to the guest rooms, you need to go to the first floor and then transfer to another elevator. There are plenty of parking spaces. Just remember to register your license plate number at the front desk; I paid almost 200 yuan the first day because I forgot.
Service: Absolutely fantastic! We received welcome fruits, desserts, a card, and drinks. There was bottled water everywhere, unopened pens, and a whole toiletry bag of amenities. The disposable hotel slippers were exceptionally comfortable, which is a rare and pleasant surprise. Housekeeping was prompt but never intrusive. They even gave my daughter the room card as a souvenir.
I heard the swimming pool and gym are excellent, but I didn't get a chance to experience them this time as I was traveling with my child. I'll definitely check them out next time, haha.FromPLN 1,430

As an established five-star hotel, overall it is still very satisfying. Although it has been around for a while, the facilities are well-maintained. The room was very quiet and completely free of any noise disturbance at night, which was very important to me. The bed was also very comfortable, and I slept well both nights. When we went out the next day and returned, we found that our luggage had been neatly placed on luggage racks, which felt very considerate. For the children's books left on the desk, they even gave us nice bookmarks. Although these are small gestures, they left a deep impression on us.
