Firstly, the interior design of the max brown hotels is great, and I feel has a surprising attention to detail for such an affordable chain. The reception in particular is great, with games for guests to play, and free lemon water for guests. I had previously stayed in the Museum District branch in Amsterdam where their service was great, and the room was comfortable. Unfortunately at this branch I felt like these elements could be improved. On arrival there was one team member helping a customer at the desk who had asked for a bottle opener. The staff member left to get this bottle opener, meaning we were stood waiting in reception for around 15 minutes. (Unfortunately we were in a rush to drop off our bags and get back out again!) When he did get to us, he told us we had booked one room, when we were very clear that it was two (giving myself and my colleague a near heart attack). Once this was resolved he gave us our room cards with no information on wifi, breakfast times, etc. I appreciate this is a budget hotel and don’t expect the world but I did receive much more attention to detail in the other max brown branch, as well as a welcome drink. The room is where things were more challenging here. My room was INCREDIBLY hot. There was no air con. It was not particular hot in Amsterdam at this time of year, but this was unbearable. There was a fan but this did not do much. I had opened the window which was a skylight (I realised later that all of the upper rooms could look down directly into my skylight, so there was a privacy challenge). This was done via a control on the wall. At 8am the next morning this closed by itself, making an incredibly loud noise that woke me, as well as my colleague who was staying on the floor above. Finally my colleague had a toilet across the hall instead of in his room, something I don’t believe was made clear on the booking Location of this hotel is brilliant, with stunning buildings surrounding the picturesque canal. Overall despite some of my negative comments about, the location, decor and my previous experiences with the chain mean I wouldn’t rule out staying with max brown again but think that I would avoid this particular branch.
