I’d love to rate the Smith House higher but unfortunately we cannot. We reserved room 6 in the original building (see confirmation pictures) but when we checked in were placed in room 38 in the new building. I see in previous reviews that the ‘owner’ answered the reviewer and said they should have gone to the front desk and asked for it to be made right. We did that. I asked for the room I paid for and was told it was not available. I then asked could we have any other room because the room we were given was very small with the smallest window I’ve ever seen. It was similar to a dorm room. The small room was clean but that is all I can say for it. There is no air conditioning in the bathroom unless you leave the door open and no wants that. I would not recommend this hotel if you think you are going to get what you paid for because you are not.

The most authentic southern style restaurant in Georgia. My family has been in Georgia for over 250 years and this is the top place for true Southern cuisine. No frill or fakery, Smith House in the truth. All served family style, the fried chicken, creamed corn, cornbread, sweet tea, cole slaw, pot roast, mashed potatoes, etc will give you a degree in authentic southern fare. This isn’t commercialized or kitsch. The fried chicken is like your southern momma used to make. Not the huge, growth hormone- chicken breasts like you get at Publix but local farm, tender, small, natural chicken spiced and fried to perfection. They roll out carts of hot food and you eat until you are satisfied. Situated in the middle of Dahlonega in a period home complete with a recently unearthed, secret, Yankee gold mine right in the Middle of the floor. The story behind it is fascinating but you need to go eat some real southern food and tour the small museum on the premises to uncover the mystery.

My husband and I recently stayed one night at The Smith House in Dahlonega, GA for our anniversary. We found the room to be underwhelming. The 'night stands' were dusty, there was a large cobweb up in one corner. Apparently, someone had spilled or splashed something(maybe a drink? coffee?) on the wall/baseboard/ carpet in one area. There was one stool to place our bags on and no chair in the room to sit on. (Or was it one backless stool to sit on and no place to place our bags?). I will say that the bathroom was quite nice. All in all, I probably would not ever stay there, again.

I frequent the Historic Hotels of America when I can, and as it was on my route I jumped at the chance. Would not recommend this Hotel to anyone. The service was terrible considering the amount of money I paid for the room. They advertised that dinner would be provided with my stay, no where did it say the restaurant was seasonal. I got a lazy welcome and no offer to carry my things to my room. There are no in-room phones and when I called (using my cell) to the front desk, no one answered. When I walked over to the main house, he was sitting kicked back without a care in the world. When I asked for restaurant recommendations I got a flippant response of: "I guess it depends on what you like." With no offer to tell me of the choices in town. The bathroom floor did not look clean and there was a hair on my lotion bottle. It is convenient to town and the bedding was very nice. On all the web photos the hotel looked apart from everything. Not so. It is surrounded by medical buildings. Not quite the setting or service I have come to expect from Historic Hotels.

The Smith House is a nice little hotel located just off the main square in Dahlonega Georgia. The location is excellent for access to shops, wine tasting rooms and restaurants as well as the Dahlonega gold museum. The hotel is old and is in need of a renovation. There was very significant peeling lead paint on the outside window frames which was concerning. The rooms were comfortable but the cleaning was lacking, with black mold in the grout of the shower (see photo). We enjoyed the rocking chairs in the front of the hotel where you can listen to live guitar music from a Mexican restaurant across the street. There is a very interesting gold mine shaft recently rediscovered in the basement of the hotel. The Smith House Restaurant serves all you can eat traditional southern food. There is no room service, but they will deliver a bottle of Smith House Wine with an opener and glasses for $20. The owners of this property are very elderly, thus the state of disrepair. The staff was very nice, but obviously frustrated with the owners and looking forward to the younger family members which may be taking over the management in years to come.

We stayed in the Carriage House, which is right beside the main house. Very nice. The lower level had couches and chairs in a nice sitting area. We stayed on the top floor. Small room, small bathroom. But it was perfect. We even had a small view of town through the window. And it was so close to the town square, we just parked and walked everywhere we went. The 2 staff members we met were very nice and helpful. I would definitely recommend this place. (We did not try the restaurant part)

The Smith house has been one of Dahlonaga’s signature places to have family style fried chicken with all the sides. I remember it from childhood. This was my first visit in 20 years. It was no longer family style and the chicken and sides were not as good as o remembered. It has changed hands.

We were under the impression that we would be going to a quaint Christmas tree lighting. It was anything but that. My four and six-year-old could not even see the tree with the amount of people there were. The hotel was full of drunk people coming in and out at all hours of the night. With paper thin walls we barely slept. The couch in the living area was only a two-seater and not comfortable. As far as the location it's top notch but if you're looking for a comfortable bed and living area and a quiet sleep , I would not choose this hotel. There were also lots of stains on the carpeting. It's not the hotel's fault but the town of dahlonega should market their quaint Christmas differently. It's really mostly loud, drunk adults, did not see many kids. We really enjoyed the town the next day when all the drunk people left it was wonderful at that point.
