This hotel is in a great, central location. The entrance, courtyard, and historical elements (stairway, stonework, etc.) are all beautiful. The bar has a great selection, including bottled Guinness, and we received friendly service there. It was nice to relax with a drink in the courtyard. We were apparently upgraded from a superior room to a suite, and the room was huge and nicely decorated and furnished, and would be great for even a lengthy stay. The only problem we had there was that our door had to be slammed to close properly, and that the corridors were stiflingly hot, but the room was wonderful otherwise. However, we felt this hotel was lacking in a few areas. When we checked in, we were told that they could not accommodate our request (made at booking) for two beds, and we were delayed waiting for a supervisor to return and poke through the computer before suggesting we divide the bed with pillows. After all that, when we went up to our room, we discovered that it did indeed have two beds. We visited two other Catalonia hotels on Calle de Atocha, and noticed that they both had cold fruit-infused water set out in their lobbies. When we inquired about that at this hotel, we were told (in mid-day) that they would be putting some water out "in ten minutes". We never saw any water out throughout our stay. Finally, we were shocked by the very poor breakfast. It was definitely inadequate for a 4 star hotel, and worse than we've seen at any other Catalonia hotel. The staff seemed eager to please, but overworked, the selection was poor, and food did not appear fresh, was not being replenished, and was cold. We would possibly stay here again, opting out of breakfast, but would more likely try another Catalonia hotel instead.
