Anvil House

This B&B is in a large house in the middle of its spacious lawn-covered plot, and is relatively comfortable: decently-sized rooms, nice beds, very quiet neighbourhood. However there were no owners or managers when we visited: upon being handed the keys we were shown around and were then left to our own... until well after our departure actually! While there is a kitchen area, breakast was to be had a 400 metre walk away, in the 1970s-looking function room of the Achill Sound Hotel. It might have been a beginning-of-season arrangement, but with poor weather it would not have made for a good start of the day... Overall though, a good, reasonably priced, clean option at the entrance to Achill Island, well located to explore the island itself and the surrounding areas.

This was a short notice booking (for one night) and the host, after an initial surprise, really rose to to challenge and quickly allocated us a nice room with a pleasant en-suite bathroom. Although the place was empty, he also turned up to turn our help-yourself breakfast into one with scrambled eggs, hot croissants and fresh expresso coffee! The location is good, just round the corner from the main high street which has a few bars and places to eat. The only small negative was that the toilet in our room constantly made a sound like heavy rain and was a bit disturbing in the night. Otherwise, thanks for a very good stay.
