This was the first time I had been back to the Derby Arms since my youth, nearly 40 years previous. On entering I was pleasantly surprised at the inviting ambiance of the interior, so was looking forward to a pleasant meal and enjoyable evening. We booked for 7:30 but it was not until a lengthy wait of an hour before we got our starters, which I thought poor. My wife ordered seafood starter and main and to be fair the seafood turned out to be very nice. However, I ordered chicken livers, which were in a sauce laid over sourdough bread. When I cut into the chicken livers they ran red with blood, something one would never desire with poultry, for potential health reasons. I asked for a replacement and when it arrived it was disappointing to see that there were much fewer liver pieces, being only five pieces spread across the sourdough slice. This poor attention to portion control was irritating. However, when I cut into the livers every one of them was uncooked inside, dripping red blood. I sent it away and the only thing I received was a half hearted apology and a comment that it would be removed from my bill. The main course I had was acceptable, nothing more. The dessert was Eton Mess parfait. It was a poor attempt at a parfait, containing no berries or even meringue in the yoghurt, as described on the menu. And what should be presented as semi-frozen yoghurt was presented so deep frozen it was hard to cut into it with a spoon. Again, very poor. But what really destroyed what ought to be a pleasant evening meal experience was that while we waited for our dessert, staff were clearing all the tables and setting up for the following morning's breakfast guests, laying out cereals, jams, coffee cups etc etc. This practice leaves one feeling like one has overstayed their welcome and is completely disrespectful of evening guests. Had we wanted to eat out in a B& B environment we would've booked a B& B. This was my first experience of the Derby Arms in a good many years and it left a bitter taste.
