Witness to War: Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome

The Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome is located within the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, situated along the Motoyasu River in the heart of Hiroshima City. On August 6, 1945, at 8:15 AM, the first atomic bomb in human history was dropped by the US military, exploding above this building and instantly devastating the city. Originally, it was the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, a five-story Baroque-style building with an 11-meter diameter and 4-meter high dome. It is now commonly referred to as the 'Atomic Bomb Dome.' During the explosion, nearby buildings were flattened, turning the area into rubble, scorched earth, and ruins. However, because the blast wave first destroyed and blew away the windows and doors of this building, allowing the shockwave to partially pass through, the structure did not completely collapse and was preserved. The exact number of casualties from this explosion remains unknown. According to Hiroshima City's investigation, including deaths caused by nuclear radiation, the death toll announced in 1967 was approximately 200,000 people.
